A: Pours a light goldenrod with a large, stiff head that resembles meringue on top of a pie. A foamy, bulged cap sustains itself throughout, laying down some nice sudsy waves and sheets of lace.

S: A pleasant aroma consisting of light grainy malts, lemon, and grassy/herbal hops. The lemony aroma is quite impressive and adds a nice summery dynamic.

T&M: Flavor is of sweet grainy/bready malts, faint lemon and a slight grassy hop taste. Nothing too bold or complicated, but still a mightily refreshing, tasty brew. The body is light with a crisp carbonation and clean, lightly sweet finish.

D: My second beer from this brewery, and it's simply outstanding. I think I have found my quintessential summer session brew. It went down in three large gulps after the few initial sips it took to assess flavor.

Weihenstephaner Original
500mL bottle into a pilsner glass

A: Pours a very light pale straw yellow, absolutely crystal clear, with 3 plus fingers width of bright white head. Head has good retention before dissipating down and leaves lots of lacing.

S: Spicy and floral hops, sweet malts. Not very complex but very nice.

T: A bit sweeter and maltier than the nose. Spicy, floral, noble hop-type flavors, with a low degree of bitterness. Some biscuity notes. Very tasty example of the style.

M/D: Lighter side of medium bodied, appropriate carbonation which is on the heavier side, crisp and clean. Good drinkability.

O: Great example of the style. Very enjoyable beer. Perfect for this near 95 degree day.

A: Golden with a slight old gold look, like tarnished gold or brass. Medium low carbonation, a finger of off white head that fades relatively fast.

S: Skunk, deep malty, light roasted malty quality, sweet like honey.

T: Sweet, bready, malty, honey, like honey on fresh biscuits. Clean linen quality, little bitterness on the end.

M: Medium light bready body, medium heated carbonation.

O: Truly a delicious beer, a standard for this style and the best I’ve yet found it in. Got this at Greenville, SC’s Whole Foods Market today, drank in Walterboro, SC.

Poured from a half-liter (17 ounce) Euro-brown bottle into a shaker pint. I go fairly aggressive on the pour and get a short-lived, yet chunky and creamy looking head. The beer is a pale or extra-pale golden with high carbonation.

My poor nose gets a faint grassy aroma along with a little DMS. The flavor is lightly malty and quite grainy with just enough hop bitterness to balance. The hops lend a grassy and slightly herbal character. The malt flavors are somewhat reminiscent of Malt-O-Meal cereal, and very creamy and delicious overall. There are no in-your-face flavors and it is very easy to drink. The mouth feel is creamy and full and actually stick a little to the back of the mouth. The finish is crisp and tingly with just a touch of fading bitterness.

This everything one could ask for in a lager beer and I give it high marks. I think I paid only about 4-something for the half liter, which ain't too bad considering it came halfway around the world from here. It's good to see more variety in my town (Butte, Montana, purchased at the Hennessey).
