The world's oldest brewery! What an extraordinary claim to fame! Brewing beer since 1040, this Bavarian brewery makes a range of quality, interesting beers. Like most older German brewers, they make a lot of noise about following the Reinheitsgebot, that fabled bad idea that fans of German beers still claim as a 'purity law'. That old law of 1517 was enacted on behalf of German bakers concerned about competition from brewers for wheat. Like many half-baked laws in societies the world over, why they didn't just pass a law saying "wheat is for bread, not beer" we may never know. Since then, it's morphed grotesquely into a purity law. Thankfully, German brewers managed to make good beer in spite of the law. Readers of this site probably know that the law was officially repealed in 1987. Weihenstephaner's "original premium" has a crisp, clean and light-bodied great taste. It pours light golden with a foamy white head. It's aroma and taste are good clean malt and mild hop. Drinkers of the beer axis of evil (you know the giants) should give this style and this brand a try. It's a very refreshing, every day kind of beer that can satisfy those afraid of the dark, but with enough complexity for people who find little interest in cars that only turn left.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

This bier is beautiful. Bubbles rise from a clear golden body to reach a frothy white head. Great head retention and lacing.

It smells of wheat, malts, and faint dried grass.

It tastes crisp and clean. Grains, malts, and said grassiness soon part ways to a more bitter finish. Great balance.

The beer feels crisp and clean going down.

Overall, this beer is lovely. All parts work well together.

A: Pours a crystal clear pale yellow in color with a moderate to heavy amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass. The beer has a two finger tall foamy white head that reduces to a small patch of very thin film and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of pale and sweet malts with light to moderate amounts of spicy + floral hops

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of pale and sweet malts with a light to moderate amount of initial sweetness. There is a light to moderate flavor of spicy + floral + grassy hops which imparts a light amount of bitterness which fades pretty quickly.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Relatively smooth and crisp.

O: Refreshing and super easy to drink - very enjoyable and a great example of the style. Definitely worth getting and I plan on getting it again soon (it's good for the summer).

Weihenstephaner Original
500mL bottle into a pilsner glass

A: Pours a very light pale straw yellow, absolutely crystal clear, with 3 plus fingers width of bright white head. Head has good retention before dissipating down and leaves lots of lacing.

S: Spicy and floral hops, sweet malts. Not very complex but very nice.

T: A bit sweeter and maltier than the nose. Spicy, floral, noble hop-type flavors, with a low degree of bitterness. Some biscuity notes. Very tasty example of the style.

M/D: Lighter side of medium bodied, appropriate carbonation which is on the heavier side, crisp and clean. Good drinkability.

O: Great example of the style. Very enjoyable beer. Perfect for this near 95 degree day.

A: Golden with a slight old gold look, like tarnished gold or brass. Medium low carbonation, a finger of off white head that fades relatively fast.

S: Skunk, deep malty, light roasted malty quality, sweet like honey.

T: Sweet, bready, malty, honey, like honey on fresh biscuits. Clean linen quality, little bitterness on the end.

M: Medium light bready body, medium heated carbonation.

O: Truly a delicious beer, a standard for this style and the best I’ve yet found it in. Got this at Greenville, SC’s Whole Foods Market today, drank in Walterboro, SC.
