Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan
Germany | website

Style: Munich Helles Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A good beer takes its time. The long storage makes our yellow bright lager, “Original”, a flavourful beer enjoyed with fine poured, white foam. With a mild hoppy note and its pleasant fresh spicy taste, it goes very well with salads, poultry, stews or with a hearty snack. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

11.2 oz bottle poured into willybecher glass no date that I could understand

A: light gold in color great clarity not much of a head but it was a soft pour

S: smells like a pilsner with that slightly acidic spicy peppery nose

T: very similar to the nose with a soft bready finish that isn't as harsh as a pilsner

M: light crisp with a softer feel not as carbonated as I thought it was going to be

O: it really doesn't stand out much from the macro beers the big boys offer its smooth light and lightly bready on the finish with a spicy peppery pilsner nose.

The lager to end all lagers. It really is that good. Here I get bottles that are four to five months old , and they are still top notch. The catch is of course the price. Around 13 bucks for a sixer, so I often will pick up something else.. But I'll put it this way. If it was of a similar price to other awesome craft lagers I enjoy, then I would never buy anything else.

The standard for Helles Lagers in my opinion, and as one of my top styles Im of course in love.

Germany in a bottle!

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Pilsner glass. It was a beautiful clear golden color. The smell as well as the taste was crisp, clean, with a sweet note. I felt it had a nice balance of body with some slight but pleasant bitterness. This could easily become a favorite.

The appearance is like a pale apple cider, crystal clear with a small head leaving lace that trails down the glass slowly. Smells of grain, corn, bread, honey and straw. Taste is heavy on corn, bread, straw and yeast. Vanilla, honey, grass, crackers, pilsner malt and faint hops squeak their way in. Exceedingly crisp and clean, light bodied but full of flavor, an absolutely perfect beer to pair with the warm days ahead. This is a lager done right.

Looks clear and nice. Smells like... A lager. Taste is subtle malt sweetness at first, and as you drink it becomes even sweeter. Very "rounded" as they say. No hops. A little bitterness is present at first, but as the beer warmed and I drank, bitterness became overtaken by the malty sweetness. Very tasty and full tasting. Could use a touch more IBUs, attenuation, and/or carbonation.
I enjoy the maltyness, but wish there were less residual sugars.

Overall, this is what I imagine a Budweiser SHOULD be.

Poured into a pilsner glass. Appears a perfectly clear crisp, bright yellow with a nice white head that never fully recedes. The nose is bready malts, and a touch of lemony hops. The taste yields nice clean malts, soft breadiness, and lemon citrus through the finish. The feel is smooth and creamy, yet still has a beautiful crispness to it. Overall, this beer is a wonderful lager that has the ability to pull you away from the over-hyped big in your face beers. A home brew of this style has drawn me into lagers and this can do the same.

Appearance: Great looking lager! Bright and golden.
Smell: Very mild but a bit like opening a loaf of bread. Once I noticed it though I couldn't seem to smell the beer anymore.
Taste: A little lemon and I noticed what to me was coriander but from other reviews a lot of people notice pepper so I think it was right in between on that note.
Feel: Slightly dry with a bubliness at the lips that didn't reach the tongue. Pretty refreshing.
Overall: Best Lager? Very Possibly! I'll have to try some other for a good side by side comparison but the beer is amazing.

A: [4.25] Beer is a transparent golden to yellow color. It forms a 1/2 finger of white head that dissipates quickly but leaves a ring around the edge of the glass. The bottle lists the ABV (5.1%) and there is a date code that says it was born on (10/20/15)

S: [3.75] Pungent lager scent of corn, crackers,

T: [4.50] Really bold flavor bringing forward crackers, malty backbone, some corn/grain taste. Later there are mild hints of caramel on the finish.

M: [4.00] Very easy to drink - but still has a medium or more body.

O: [4.00] I was wow'd by the flavor and the body at 5.1%. This is easily my favorite German beer. It is hitting everywhere. Many lagers fit into a tin, plain flavor profile. This is amped up quite a bit. I really like this and the flavor and the body combine to make it an A beer.

L - flawless. The clearest dark straw I have ever seen with creamy frothy head.

S - wow. Potent rich bready yeasty classic Bavarian beer

T - stellar. So much flavor into.so a light drinkable beer. Extremely bread with a ridiculously light but potent bitter bite back.

M - I've use "creamy" before but damn, this beer epitomizes it. I almost don't feel the carbonation yet it's ANYTHING but flat.

O - as my 571the beer rating and probably 800th beer I've clearly been chasing too many bourbon barrel stouts and fresh dipas. This is a case purchase in the future.

a: clear golden straw yellow. 2 finger frothy white head that hangs around

s: sweet caramel malts, lemongrass, slightly earthy bitterness, a hint of dry crackers

t: those sweet malts upfront, followed by a big hit of freshly baked bread. there is a faint earthy (noble) hop presence in here that does not so much add bitterness, as it keeps the malt from becoming too sweet. on the back you pick up a little of that lemongrass and grains. extremely smooth

m: on the fuller side of light. carbonation is normal - not too high

o: one of the smoothest beers you can drink. sweet, crisp, refreshing, with a real clean flavor. I have never had a bad beer from Weihenstephaner, and this one is no exception

Pint on-tap at Brewdog Glasgow (£4.30):
Great stuff from Weihenstephan, apparently it's not only wheat beers that they know how to brew well. A very well balance beer that's crowning glory was how simple & drinkable it was. Everything went together well to make an excellent lager; there was good balance between the sweet touches, grassy hops & the bitterness with nothing seeming to dominate & everything going down easily. A classic helles beer & one that I'd definitely go for again.

This is one of the best beers I've ever had. It's feel is incredible. So smooth, and tasty. The wheat is prominent in the best kind of way. If you find it, try this beer!

I've had many mediocre lagers that were highly rated, so I wasn't too hopeful when I picked this one up. A lot of pale beers seem to me to be too austere, possibly described as dry or tart. Weihenstephaner original surprised me with its great mellow flavor.

For the style.
LOOKS: Light golden, champagne like bubbles rising up. Finger of creamy/foamy white head, leaves a nice little layer on top of the beer and a nice little bit of lacing down the glass.
AROMA: White crusty bread, grassy, corn husk, clean.
TASTE: Just like aroma, with a nice pleasant lasting bitterness on the finish.
MOUTHFEEL: Light body, dry, crisp and refreshing. Great carbonation, but not over the top and cheap feeling.
OVERALL: This ain't no McLager boys and girls. If you know someone that says they hate lagers...serve them this beer.

holy god d*&^!

"What is the one beer you would choose if there could be only one beer?" Right now I think it would be this one as it is hard to imagine getting tired of it.
pours a light gold with a one finger head that leaves tantalizing remnants; somehow the bubbles look just right.
what a classic beer smell. bready, noble, fresh, integrated, authentic, nostalgic--reserved and understated yet powerful, hard to do it justice in print, while the flavor can be (inadequately) described using the very same descriptors. maybe a few cases down the road, better words will come. everything complements everything else, with a medium body carrying the perfect measure of snappy hop flavor and bready malt into the finish.
Finally got around to trying this one after many years of slowly checking out virtually every other helles and pilsner available. Suddenly, it was like I was experiencing the very archetype of drinkable beer, of which the others were merely imperfect copies. this is my view through 2 bottles. if later sessions manage to leave the same impression, the rating may well need to be adjusted upward (from an already lofty 4.73).

This is my second beer from Weihenstephaner. I went for the Original this time around. I basically just check out whatever my favorite Minneapolis stores, Grand Wine & Cheese (on Lake St.) or Elevated (on Hiawatha), have in stock for foreign beers. I say this to give you an indication of my novice-level reviewing. As an apparently prolific brewer, Weihenstephaner gets stocked at both places frequently. Despite not being the freshest (at least a few weeks from being fresh?), this beer tastes quite good. None of the thinner, skunky aspects of many prolific american brewers. The flavors aren't completely masked in hops either. Very light and fruity, while still tasting like beer. Refreshing, yet still substantial - those qualities I like best in beer. The Original has a straightforward lager flavor, while being more complex than many lagers. My reference point for a Helles Lager is the Surly Hell. While I love Surly, I appreciate the Weihenstephaner's more complex flavor - not overly laden in hops.

Serving Type: Bottle
Consumed: 1.15.16

A: 4.5 Pours a clear, yellow-gold. The fluffy, nearly white head has good retention and leaves lots of lace.

S: 4.25 Classic aromas. Bready, toasted malt, lemon, minerally, mild hops, and a bit of pepper.

T: 4 Similar to the nose. Barely sweet with lots of toasted cracker, malt, lemon, with a peppery, grassy finish. Finish is a bit watery after the beer warms a bit.

M: 4.5 The body is creamy and crisp at the same time with good carbonation and a dry finish.

O: 4.25 This is a great example of the style – like a pilsner but a bit more mild and creamy. Good amount of flavor without being too heavy or intense. Great stuff!

Poured from a 0.5 L bottle into a pilsner glass. Bottled on code of 6325, which if I understand the code correctly means it was bottled on the 6th of August 2015.

Look -- Pours a clear pale straw with 2 fingers of tight white head that leaves nice lacing on the glass.

Smell -- Sweet biscuity malt with notes of lemon and sulfur.

Taste -- Biscuit sweetness, touches of lemon, a light bitterness, and an touch of mineral taste in the background.

Feel -- Lively carbonation, light body, and a slightly dry finish leave this lager crisp and clean on the palate.

Overall -- A nice clean Helles that is dangerously drinkable. I could easily drink this by the liter.

Aroma: Moderate malty sweet aroma with slight spicy nobel hop aroma.

Appearance: Very light crystal clear gold color with nice white head. Head on mine faded fairly quickly.

Flavor: Slight pils malt flavor. The hops seemed to dominate over the malt. Had a low bitterness at the end along with a dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body & carbonation with slight dryness at the end

Overall: Was an OK beer, I think mine might have been a little old and was lacking in the malt department a bit.

Weihenstephaner Original Premium.

Beer number two out of the enclosed holiday box my brother gave me. Only had a few outta this highly acclaimed German brewery but only because finding fresh beers outta these guys is a chore. This is my palate washer for the night since it isn't a style that sticks out as having some insane flavors to discect (sp?). Enough Shiite, let's drink it.

Look - Poured from the twelve ounce bottle into a coca cola pint glass. Beers pours a moderately clear yellow with a finger and a half of white head that over the course of a minute dies down to a thick cloud formation amongst the top of my glass. Caronation goes from zero to one hundred as soon as the top is popped on this brew and dumped into your consumption helper. Minimal lacing upon a finished glass.

Smell - The nose on this brew has just a touch of the skunk you would expect outta a German brewery though it is quickly overtaken by a quick pleasant and clean west bill that brings a touch of sweetness to your nose that really gets you interested in an otherwise bland style. Almost sugar like. Not a huge nose but seeing as this is a basic German beer, it smells more welcoming than ' American basic ' beers. Interested to see where this goes.

Taste - Wow! What a loaded flavor for a lager!. Much better than your typical American/Canadian/Mexican shit. Nice levels of the breads with just enough to keep a casual interested and swallowing it down along with a kiss of sweet hop on the middle. Touch of skunk comes through on the end but it isn't nearly as present as a lot of imports. This bottle may be a bit old as well for the reference. This is a true evolved everymans beer. No cheap adjunct flavors to be found here.

Feel - The body also holds together. Nice and moderate to full believe it or not despite the fact it is a lager. The carbonation is low but what is there is quite cold. Easy swallowing and pleasant. Not a huge body by any means, but for the style it is nice.

Overall - Well if this were available in a $15 thirty pack I think it would become one of the most popular brews in the U.S.. not overly flavorful but a bit heavy bodied for a generic swiggity swagger at a college party. Overall, if you can take a good lager for a fishing trip or a night in the blind looking for your next 200+ white tail, give it a shot. As always, come to your own conclusion...

Poured into wheat beer glass. It's a pale golden yellow in color, perfectly clear, with a thick, bright-white head and lacing. The smell features yeast with floral hops and a hint of citrus. The citrus comes through in the taste but it finishes slightly bitter. It is delightfully light and crisp and super easy to drink. This is a perfect German lager.

Pale straw, perfect clarity, white head, lots of lazy bubbles. Nose and flavor are mild skunk, a bit of spicy/grassy hops that also contribute some mild bitterness, and a light wheat touch. Reminds me of pilsner malt. Super well attenuated. Super light body, well carbonated but smooth.
Reminiscent of cheap macros, but something about this is actually really enjoyable and pleasant, yet also far from what I would call delicious. It simultaneously brings to mind both sticky college dive bar floors and masterful craftsmanship by bearded men in lederhosen. Either way I could see this growing on me- easy to do when I feel like I could put down a half dozen before I knew what happened.
