This is what a lager should look like: a crystal-clear, sparkling pale-straw body with a medium white cream-and-pebbles head that leaves lots of beautiful lacing everywhere. The nose is sweet and malty, green grapes and alcohol with hints of darker fruit and fennel. The palate is malty as well, deep and smooth with prominent grassy and herbal notes, but nicely balanced by a citrus-rind bitterness. The finish is a smooth, sublime blend of malty sweetness and bitter rind that lingers on and on. The fizzy carbonation sets the light body up for a creamy, prickly mouthfeel that is both drinkable and interesting.

Light, pale yellow straw colored, clear body; thick, white, frothy head that dissipates into a finger's-width ring. Lots of bubbles.

Aroma: very grassy hops; some hay; grainy.

Grassy flavor, with a noticeable, clean, pleasant grassy hop pucker. Some light bread crust. Grainy backbone.

Mouthfeel: light and watery, and carbonated.

Finish: dry, crisp, refreshing.

Been brewing since 1040... Yes, I think they have the brewing process down! Weihenstephaner is THE standard.

Pours like most lagers. Not much happening with the smell. Taste is very good. Crisp with just the right amount of hop, malt and all else. Sweet taste with a bitter bite that makes German lagers German. Could drink this all day. I wonder how this tastes in Germany?????

The quintessential German lager. Had several times but felt compelled to praise it tonight in review form, after I'd sampled it out on the patio after a long day.

Aroma - grassy, a little pungent, very inviting.

Taste/feel - so clean, lightly sweet, a little bitterness, goes down so so smooth.

If it gets any better than this, I've not found it.

Light, perfectly balanced and creamy. Not a big old-world fan, but perfect light beer for an early evening.

This is what a lager should taste/look like. Yeasty/bready flavor/smell with a hint of lavender? and a light hop balance. Almost the inverse of a pale ale where the hops dominate. Delicate, creamy and goes down easy. One of my top 3 lager/pilsners and I've had many, er, tried many different, you get the idea.

This is my very first time trying this style so I'll give it a solid 4 until I have a better idea of what the style is all about.

One of the very best lagers in the entire world. I've tried hundreds of beers, and have found none to eclipse this beer in the Lager style. Do yourself a favor and try this beer. Can sometimes be found in your local Ingles Beer department.

With a brew like this one, It becomes much easier to understand how Bohemian and Bavarian lagers came to dominate the beer world in the later 19 century. Drinking some of the oroginals of the era makes it much harder to understand how so many brewers and beer drinkers allowed these brews to be eclipsed by the vast ocean of neutral or adjunct-tainted, flavorless, "international lager" style beers that have dominated the beer world throughout the 20th century, and the first quintile of the 21st.

Weihenstephan brews quite a few wonderful beers, and this one is their offering in the classic Bavarian pale lager style known as Helles. It pours beautiful pale goldencolor, with an inch of foam that falls quickly to a lovely wreath sustained by a fountain of champagne-like bubbles; the aroma that greets your nose is new-mown grain and fresh damp hay. Grassy and spicy.

The flavor is beautifully balanced grainy malt and briskly palate-cleansing hops. A big hit of maltysweetness is balancedby grainy and earthy tones, as well as by the rush of fine carbonation. What atreat!

Golden in color, with a perfectly balanced head, and refined taste, this beer is the prime example of what a Helles should look and taste like.

Had a cold >.5L bottle the other day and I must say this is truly one great lite tasting brew. A great soft beer taste yet the flavor is amazing. A rating of 91 is an understatement IMHO. The alcohol content is just right. Just wish I could bring home a few cases of this great tasting beer.

Pours light golden, crystal clear with a fluffy white head. Head recedes slowly leaving a fairly sticky lacing. Lots of fine bubbles.

Grassy and honey aroma. Very pleasant. Grainy pils malts. Herbal noble hops, but malt is dominant. No real fruity esters. Some DMS is notable, but fairly clean and within balance for the style.

Grainy somewhat sweet malts. Honey-like sweetness but finishes dry. Enough bitterness to balance the sweetness, but not much hop flavor. Very refreshing and pleasant.

Soft silky mouthfeel without being heavy. Medium-high carbonation. Clean, dry finish with some lingering pilsner malt character remaining on the palate.

Lovely malt character while still being light and refreshing. Despite what happens when these beers are shipped, this one has held up beautifully.

Served cool from 500ml bottle into straight mug.

L) Pale straw colour, clear, dense pure white head. Lots and lots of bubbles rising. Looks class, if a bit pale.

S) Peppery hallertau hops. Not as yeasty / bready as some of the style, so less appealing.

T) Creamy; lighter flavour than many Munich helles. As per the nose, the strong yeasty / bready flavour of some of the best helles isn't quite there. On the other hand, the flavour is straight forward with pleasing hop bitterness at the end of the gulp, with no unwelcome hints of sweetness, like Paulaners helles has.

F) This has a very pleasant creamy mouthfeel. Not as fizzy as it looks, but the body is refreshing.

O) A good Helles, not one of the best I've had, but solid, refreshing and I would buy it again.

16.9 oz bottle,
Pours very clear, yellow, not much head, no head retention. minimal lacing.
Smells a bit skunky, Heineken-like. not good.
Taste, smooth, similar to an Oktoberfest, a little Euro-skunk.
I'm disappointed. I love the Weihenstephaner Hefe Dunkel which might be in my top 10 all time favorite beers. The Weihen Hefe is awesome too. This... meh. It does go down easy. But there's lots of other things I'd rather drink.

Golden color, white cap with no lacing, smells and tastes of biscuits, malts, and yeast. Bubbly carbonation and easy to drink. Great all around beer.

16.9 oz bottle poured into a stein. Light gold color, excellent clarity, and a creamy white head that leaves behind spotty lacing. Sweet malts in the aroma with a touch of spice from the hops. Clean and malty in the flavor as well but great balance with the hops. Medium bodied, full of flavor, and ridiculously easy to drink. Soft carbonation bubbles rise to the surface throughout the beer. A classic Helles lager, one of the best I've had to date.

beautiful, almost champagne-like pour with lots of carbonation. lively brew! lively yellow color. a bit dry. takes me back to "the day" when I was venturing out, branching out on my beer and realizing there is more to beer than Michelob and Lowenbrau. Old World Village in Huntington Beach is where I got my first tastes at 17 and haven't looked back. great memories. great beer. Germany still rules..... if this is a LAGER, than this is one of the best representations of it.

Just about the very definition of that classic German lager. Highly carbonated, very clear. Almost no hop flavor but clean malts.
