A 500ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2012. Picked up from a supermarket a while back. Been meaning to review this one for ages - beer from the world's oldest recorded brewery!
Poured into a straight pint glass; I swirled the bottle before the final pour. A deeply hazy, translucent golden-amber hue with effervescent carbonation. Produces a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few moments before collapsing. Aroma of sweet malt and yeast esters, with notes of banana, clove, bread, faint nutmeg and a mild whiff of alcohol. An initial metallic hint fades away after a little while. An earthy, vinous quality lurks in the background. Complex and superb.
Tastes of sweet malt with a dry, yeasty character. Notes of banana, clove, bread, faint honey and subtle stewed hops. Possesses a mildly tart dryness, as if infused with a hint of lemon. A bone-dry finish; no bitterness to speak of. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with pleasing carbonation and great body. Thick and chewy. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of yeast esters and banana.
Simply put, one of the world's greatest beers. All the characteristics of weissbier are superbly blended together - the yeast esters produce a fantastically balanced flavour and aroma. An easy-drinking classic; very refreshing and I could happily imagine sinking a few. Add this to your list of must-try beers.
