500ml bottle into Augustiner weizen glass, no BB

Pours with a huge fluffy white head, allow some head space, swirl the final bit and dump in the yeast. Slightly clear straw yellow gets hit with the yeast and clouds up nicely, final color is a hazy yellow/orange. Head goes down to a skim a bit too quickly to be perfect. Smell is pure weizen yeast: banana, cloves and some dry wheat. Man is this beer aromatic. Taste has tons of yeast complexity and some clove spiciness, hint of sweet from the malt. Mouthfeel has some dryness due to the wheat, light bodied and very high carb, carb even teases the mouth.

Hands down the best hefeweizen, the Germans invented the style and they sure do know how to make em. The only American hefe that comes close is SN's Kellerweiss. Light bodied and full of flavor with none of the off tastes that inferior beers of the style so often have. I feel pity for the person who lets blue moon be the beginning and end of their foray into wheat beers. If the head had held up better and the smells had hit harder this would be a perfect beer. I long for the day I can try this one fresh at the brewery.

A - Pours clear, golden yellow. A massive 3 finger frothy white head forms and stays around a bit before settling down to a nice rim of white. Awesome spotty lacing.

S - Banana, clove, slight coriander, yeast and a bit of malt. Really great smelling.

T - Taste follows the nose, with a bit more of the malt showing up. Really well balanced between the fruit and malt.

M - Light bodied and crisp, with perfect carbonation.

O - I can see why this is considered the gold standard for Hefe's. It really is an awesome beer.

A: Cloudy golden hue, with a touch of orange. Head is massive and foamy, and lingers a LONG time. Lacing is good.

S: Perfect for a Hefeweizen! Wheat, citrus, pepper, and a little banana. I could keep sniffing this all day, but for the urge to drink.

T: Wheat is there, but no malty sweetness. A little citrus tartness, but less than the smell would indicate. The bitterness in the finish was potent, but not in a bad way.

M: A bit dry, with average carbonation for the style.

O: Very good. I can see why the brewery has been around for nearly a thousand years. I was a little disappointed that the taste didn't live up to the aroma. I'd drink another anytime, but given the choice, I'd go with Paulaner for a Hefewiezen.

On a side note, it's interesting that this brewer of a wheat beer makes the claim, "brewed under the purity law of 1516" when wheat was specifically forbidden by that law (but I guess it sounds better for marketing than saying, "brewed under the provisional German beer law of 1993")

A beer that I've claimed over the past few years as one of my top ten favorites, tonight's beer is the Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier. Brewed in Bavaria, Germany, Weihenstephan's label states that it's the oldest brewery in the world. Records date back to the year 768 with documents mentioning a hop garden, but the brewery was officially licensed in 1040.

The 17oz bottle pours at a clear burnt-amber color, with a nice thick ivory white foam on top. The foam lingers for several minutes, and leaves behind a mild lacing as it recedes. The aromas are bright and distinct, with plenty of lemon, orange peel, banana, and spices. I absolutely love the aromas on this little Hefeweiss!

On the palate, the Weihenstephaner is flavorful and complex, yet so incredible easy to drink! The citrus and banana is right up front in my mouth, but not far behind is the spice and just a touch of alcohol. This is an absolutely delicious brew that I highly recommend for anyone who ever considered those mediocre mass-produced imitations.
