Outside of the hefeweissbier served at the Andechs Monastery in Munich from their oak barrel, this is the best hefeweissbier you will ever drink. Perfection in a glass. One of my favorite beers of all time. Ayinger's hefeweissbier comes close but Weihenstephaner have mastered the hefeweissbier.

Pours a hazy, golden-hued liquid into a weissbier glass. Head is perfect as not too much and not too little. Lacing is light. Smell is light citrus, bright cloves and subtle malt. Mouthfeel is light on carbonation and alcohol. Taste is a brilliant explosion of malt, bready yeast, clove/banana and delicate sweetness. Finish is smoother than water off a duck's back. No bitterness at all. While most weissbiers lean one way or the other on the sweetness scale, Weihenstepher nails the balance perfectly. One of the best beers in the world.

Special thanks to my girlfriend’s parents for bringing me back a Weihenstephaner gift pack straight from Bavaria. They’ll never see this, but I just wanted to mention them!

500 mL bottle poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass at fridge temperature.

L – Very hazy deep gold color with an enormous 7-finger white frothy, creamy head. Excellent retention and a little bit of lacing. A little half-finger white frothy cap sits on the surface of the beer all the way down the glass.

S – Bready and grainy wheat, banana, cloves, and a little bit of bubblegum. Smells absolutely fantastic.

T – Follows the nose with a taste that is just as robust as the aroma – something that is difficult to accomplish judging by the small number of beers that have equal tastes and aromas. The beer is sweet all the way through with bready and grainy wheat malt, lots of banana esters, and a little bit of bubblegum. As the taste progresses, yeasty clove spice really picks up. Delicious.

F – Light-to-medium-bodied with great carbonation, a crisp but creamy mouthfeel, and a spicy and pleasantly dry finish. Spicy yeast lingers for a really nice amount of time.

O – This is an absolutely fantastic hefeweizen. It’s easy to see why it’s rated the best. Everything is so nearly perfect for the style that it’s tough to not give this one 5s across the board. The fact that it’s so readily available in the US makes it even better. Without a doubt, this is a must try for all beer-lovers.
