poured into a tulip

A.

typical hefeweizen brew. A cloudy peach colored beer which a huge amount of thick, dense and pillowy off-white head.

S.

Huge amounts of banana, orange, clove and spice. Maybe just a touch of bubblegum in there as well. Great aroma on this one.

T.

Similar to nose but not as dominant. Lots of wheat along with the typical banana, citrus and spice. Subtle sweetness and bitterness. Very drinkable as it's not too "in your face" with flavor.

M.

A little on the light side....great carbonation however. I could use a little more body but still a good feel. A little dry finish which I like.

O.

A great beer for the style. Not to mention it's readily available and relatively cheap. Seems like it's been forever since I had a nice hefe as I'd rather drink a stout or IPA, however this would be a go to beer if I'm craving a hefe.

Poured into a goblet and a thick, fluffy head formed. Color is a hazy burnt orange. The nose has a ton of malt with a yeasty/lemon zest. The taste is packed with zesty hop and yeast flavors(earthy lemon). I'm impressed by the dry, bready middle. The finish is a crisp malty/lemon with a dry carbonation.

500 mL bottle poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass at cellar temperature.
Best before date: December.22.2011

Appearance- Pours a nice semi-cloudy golden straw colour with a massive four fingers of fluffy white head that very slowly dissipates to a fluffy bubbly top of head that does subside but never really goes away, a very sexy looking beer to be honest.

Smell- Can definitely smell the yeast right away and it has a clove spice to it on the nose, the usual bready malt aromas are also very present and a nice fruity aroma of bananas and citrus fruit come through in the backbone.

Taste- Very similar to the smells although the spices from the cloves play a much more major role on the palate hitting you right away, the citrusy fruits come in next with the unripe banana taste coming through more than the citrusy notes. Again the usual bready malt flavours are there in the taste as well although not as predominant as in the smell and a hint of yeast comes through in the taste as well, overall a very complex tasting Hefe.

Mouthfeel- A medium bodied Hefe that has great carbonation, definitely very smooth, crisp, and easy drinking as well. Although sampled at cellar temps I’m sure a nice cold one would be very thirst quenching on those warm spring days

Overall- There is a reason why this one is rated so high and it does deserve all its praise, the smells are great and the taste is even more complex, overall just a great hefe and worthy of a world class beer. Honestly I feel almost privileged that this is a regular offering at the crappy old government dominated LCBO, a definite go to when is search of this style of brew and pretty much the benchmark from what I compare others in this category to as well, very quality and well worth it.

A: Beautiful 4 finger whip cream head. Mad torrent of carbonation rising to the top. I've never seen anything quite like it. Color is a more dull pilsner shade and a bit disappointing. Thick lacing. Somewhat cloudy.
S: Nostril opening punchy yeast. Sweet and a pinch soapy. Citrus banana.
T: More bitter than I expected. Sweet banana's, slightly heavy yeast.
M: Smoothish but watery, carbonation very mild,
O: Decent. I've had better Weihenstephaners.

Pours glowing cloudy golden amber with heaps of whipped cream white head that rims. Banana creme pie and natural bees wax candle nose. Ripe banana and cookie dough with light clove, more nutmeg and bark hops. Lightly phenolic ending and tingly tropical fruit linger. Creamy, soft, round and light to medium with a bit of chew, maybe a tad thin.

Seemless. Makes Paulaner seem like diesel. All the potentially sharp flavours are rounded off in a so-smooth package. Exemplar of the style.

Pours a rich yellow color with billowing white head, filling the immediate vicinity with smells of bread, clove, banana, and slight lemon citrus. When brought to the nose the flavors intensify with bread subsiding and clove taking the lead, followed shortly by banana. Taste follows the nose with clove and banana leading, with the finish almost tasting like a slice of citrusy banana bread. Lemon is also in the finish but very mild. Drinkablilty is very very high. I could easily drink several 500ml bottles of this on a hot day, and plan to.

Poured from their standard bottle into an oversized stemless wine glass.

A: Straw yellow color, really thick tall head. Nice retention, spots of lacing. Opaque, very dense cloudy look.

S: Biscuity, can really get the clove. Pepper, lemon and bits of banana. Really nicely balanced aroma.

T: Wonderful taste, lots of clove, citrus, and the right amount of banana. Amazing balance, the biscuit flavor is there, but not bready at all. Really wonderful, nice and summery.

M: Very smooth, perfect carbonation. The goldilocks of carbonation, just right! Really great feel.

O: Love it..Love everything about it. This is exactly what a Hefeweizen should taste like. Will definitely getting more for summer drinking.

Pours cloudy yellow in color with a massive 3 finger foamy white head that looks like a cloud of bubbles; the head lasted a long time, dropping slowly as the cloudy head turned into a snowy sculpture and left great foamy lacing as it went down.

Smells of yeast, sweet malt, lemon, clove, grass, spices like pepper, banana and soft fruity notes; really nice and for a lack of better words, it smells happy and inviting.

Tastes of sweet malt, yeast, lemon, banana, clove and the classic metallic funky-ness from the yeast, which tingles and prickles the tongue and then gives way to coriander, pepper and other spices, some orange peel, tart apple or pear, citrus hops, wheat and some very light bready grains. Wow, talk about a great summer session beer, this brew has been going for hundreds of years for a reason – it is damn tasty.

Mouthfeel is light, crisp and refreshing, and yet smooth, creamy and slick at the same time; this has very light to almost zero carbonation, a dry finish on the tart side that almost feels like the beer evaporates after each swallow.

A great beer that has just the right balance of everything that a hefeweizen should have; the clove, spices and banana are mild and perfect and won’t turn off a “regular” beer drinker. This is the standard for this style and I’m glad I had it again with the ability to savor and review it. A very high recommendation on any day, and the fact that I got it at a super market for $2.99 per 25 oz bottle makes this the bargain of the year so far.

A beautiful golden orange with a massive foamy white head that fills the top of the glass & lasts remarkably well. As you would expect the beer is a cloudy one. It's incredible looking & I can’t wait to taste it.

An exceptionally good combination of banana & oranges blended with a mix of lemon, clove and wheat. A truly excellent smelling beer that gets better each time.

A great tasting banana flavour upfront that is combined with cloves and oranges and a hint of citrus in the background. Fantastic and a beer I could drink all night long.

Smooth and incredibly refreshing, the beer goes down so well and feels great. It is light to medium bodied with perfect carbonation.

Absolutely fantastic all round & definitely one the best beers I have ever tried. Exactly what a hefeweizen should taste like & one that everyone should try.

Poured a frothy pillowy two finger head that stuck around for sometime - lots of lacing - a nice cloudy wheat appearance - you can not see your fingers on the other side of the glass

Smells delicious - yeasty, bananas and cloves, some citrus and floral notes

Tastes much the same - bananas, cloves, orange, bread - slight bitter taste and some alcohol

Mouthfeel - lots of carbonation and a little bitter - still quite smooth

Overall - a tremendous wheat beer with a complex taste - perfect for the patio this summer - very refreshing

Appearance - vey light straw coloured ale, somewhat cloudy but has some amount of clarity. There is a tremendous amount of head, very white and fluffy. Some very nice streams of carbonation occurring as well.

Smell - banana's, oranges, spices, what a tremendous combination! The beer offers all these great smells, along with the wheat base and a very refreshing balance.

Taste - the added volume adds some good mouthfeel, really fills the mouth full of flavour. little more bitterness at the end, which is very good.

Mouthfeel - lotsa good levels of carbonation enhance all flavours, very good mouthfeel. there is an added bitterness as well.

Overall - this is one of the best beers i have had, it combines everything one could want and so much more. I am very happy i can buy this all the time.

A- Dark golden color, slightly orange, very cloudy and murky. Bavarian pour produces a huge three fingers of white head.

S- Lots of grainy malt, yeast, some light citrusy orange spice.

T- Lightly toasted malts, lots of yeast, the expected banana, clove, and slight orange. Bitterness from the hops isn't really detectable. Alcohol is only slight.

M- Semi-crisp, medium body.

O-Still the perfect wheat beer, just in time for the warm weather.

A: Clear, pale gold in color. The real impression is made my the thick frothy head. Such a strong head that I had to be very careful when pouring.

S: Strong smell of banana bread with a hint of orange and lemon.

T: Banana and other citrus flavors right off the bat. Perfect combination of wheat, clove, and banana flavors to make this taste so refreshing.

M: Smooth and creamy. Light and refreshing.

O: This beer is the epitome of its style for a reason. Incredibly drinkable. I try to always keep some on hand whether I want to enjoy a refreshing beer or cleanse my palate between contrasting styles.

Pours a golden-tan-orange body with a lofty 3 finger head. Plenty of rising bubbles maintain this nice head. Smells of metallic banana with a hint of wheat bread. The best tasting hefeweizen I have ever had. Very pure in flavor, begins with an alcohol feel and then sets in the banana bread flavor. A wonderful dry finish tops off the flavor and leaves you wanting the next sip. Truly the best hefeweizen I have ever had.

Pours a beautiful cascading cloudy orange, quite light and almost marmalade-hued at the bottom of the glass, and a more opaque orange prior to the head. Nice frothy white head sits atop and dissipates slowly.

Nose is filled with orange, banana and peach. A slight bit of clove. A very strong and pleasant smell.

Taste is great. Very similar to the nose, with banana, orange and peach coming though, but a taste of bubblegum is present as well. Cloves come through strongly in the finish.

Body is very refreshing, but not too light. Perfect for the summer. Carbonation is a little strong for my liking, though I suppose it is fairly in line with the style.

Overall, a fantastic hefeweien. Since we in Ontario are pretty restricted in our beer choices by the whims of the LCBO, I am very happy that this one is a regular part of its offerings. Now that it is getting warm out, I will be drinking a lot of this one.

Pours a nice straw yellow color. I love the head on this beer. Great lacing. The aromas coming from this beer are classic Hefewizen. Bannana, clove, fresh baked bread. The taste is spot on as well. Bannana and clove is what I get first, then some nice bready flavors on the finish. Creamy body and nice carbonation. I love this beer.

A- From a .5 liter bottle, poured the inverted way. Pale gold and very cloudy , big white head that never really fades away completely.
S- This is what a Hefe should smell like. Banana bread right out of the oven.
T-The banana is there with a salty clove finish. this is a fantastic summer beer and pretty damn good the rest of the year also.
MO- I could drink this beer everyday and I think I might start keeping it around more often. The only bad thing is that every other Hefe wont measure up. This is the beer that the hefe characteristics were written about.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into the curved weisse glass from the gift pack. Attempted to do it traditional style, pretty much failed on that. (Will not be holding my poor pour against the score!)

Appearance- After it settled down, excellent amount of head with lacing throughout. Hazy golden color, like a hefeweizen should have.

Smell- Exactly what you should expect from the style. Lots of cloves and bananas. Pleasant, but not overpowering in any way.

Taste- Again, bananas and cloves, a very full taste, but still very easy drinking.

Mouthfeel- Exceptional! Despite the full taste, this in no way taxed my palate. As light on the tongue as a BMC lager, but with a taste that rivals any beer.

Overall- Had to go the full monte on this one. In addition to the combination of drinkability and full flavor, you can taste history while drinking this beer. This is the hefeweizens all others are measured against, and for a good reason.

Weihenstephan Hefe

Weihenstephan is the world's oldest operating brewery with a history dating back to 1050 a.d. They even have a university dedicated to the art of brewing. The brew pours a cloudy golden amber color and maintains a sudsy, persistent head. Aromas of bananas, cloves, yeast, and wheat are prevalent. The taste is full and abound with no particular flavor overpowering any other flavor, yet they all stand out individually. This is one to be tried by all who seek good brew! Even those who don't like hefeweizens find that they like this a lot.

One of life's simple pleasures, maybe not to simple. This beer has head for days, I got a little carried away in the pour and had to suck the overflowing head. Needless to say the head is better than three fingers of dense foam. The color is slightly hazy, matching a 10 on the SRM beer color chart. Very sticky lace that clung to the glass to the end. Smell is fascinating, with aromas of banana, cloves, tangelo, peach, and sun dried sweet wheat. Taste is almost beyond words and this is from someone who is not much of a fan of wheat beer. There are a myriad of flavors weaving in and out of each mouthful. There is banana, cloves, orange, lemon, vanilla, cinnamon, did I mention banana, well it was just great. Mouthfeel is very full and creamy, with lots of tingle. Just a pleasure to drink. Hard to come by or I would have much more of this.

finally get to try this...

pours out of the half litre brown bottle a hazy sunset gold colour with a large meringue like head. ample lace. wonderful yeast, spicy wheat and lemon aromas; plenty of banana esters, orange and some hints of clove. smells really bright and fresh. spicy malted wheat flavour careens to the lemon and spice side...some grassy notes with a good dose of apple, banana, vanilla, and clove to round things out. lighter body than i was expecting with a mouthfeel that runs more crisp than creamy albeit refreshing and replenishing...it lets all the flavours bounce around splendidly. this is outstandingly drinkable with a overall "wow" factor that will make me revisit this all summer now that it's available to me.

hit the spot after a day of yardwork on a sunny and warm spring day!

A few and, sadly, far between bottle of the famed Hefeweissbier. The last time I had this it was exactly what I needed. This time was no different.
It pours the standard for hefeweizens, a glorious gold that makes you believe it is clear, even as the truth is before your eyes. Enormous cloud of white foam and staining on the glass that I wish I could copy next Halloween into my pumpkin. Sweet wheat, sweet, ripe banana, and a punch of some clove. Barely bittered, the sweet notes ripple over each other in an earnest attempt on my affection. So smooth and worthy of princes to bathe in. On the sweet side, certainly, but the banana finish is delightful.
I need to be drinking this beer more often. Here comes summer.

12oz bottle, batch/date coded

A - Cloudy, and almost glowing pale gold body with a voluminous white head that retains excellently well and leaves good lacing down the glass. Constant streams of bubbles from the bottom of the glass. Very inviting.

S/T - Both similar with banana and clove up front and a yeasty, wheat like finish.

M - Light body, high carbonation, crisp and refreshing on the finish with a very slight tartness/bitterness as well.

O - Wow, not bad for being about 6 months old according to the batch coding! I can't imagine how much more tasty this would be fresh from the source. This beer just screams refreshing, and was perfect for this warm spring day. My favorite weissbeer to date. I'll definitely buy this again.

I'm really Thirsty...

Appearance-Couldy Orange color with a big 3 finger silky white head which leaves little lacing.

Smell-Banana and spice aroma with hints of orange and lemon. Some yeast coming through as well.

Taste-Upfront you get the yeast, malt and wheat. The lemon and orange peel comes through along with some cloves and some black pepper. The finish leaves me with a banana/clove combo lingering on my tongue.

Mouthfeel-Light to Medium carbonation with a nice amount of carbonation. Very refreshing.

Overall-Very good beer, very smooth and refreshing, and could go real well with food. Very Reasonable as well.
