BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan
Germany | website

Style: Kristalweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
In our golden-yellow crystal-clear wheat beer the fresh citrus flavour harmonises very well with spicy banana notes. The fine sparkling gives it a tangy and animated appearance. Throughout summer and winter, it’s a prickling experience. It goes well with fish, seafood, white meat or it can be enjoyed as an aperitif. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Bottle pour. Very clear with a one finger head. While I enjoyed this beer, I prefer their regular Hefeweizen. The taste of the Kristalweizen was a little too subdued.

To my knowledge, this is my first time drinking this style; certainly the first time reviewing it.
It poured a light straw color with a big foam head. It had fruity aromas that were slightly citric and even tart at first. Then, soft Hefeweizen like tones of banana and bubble gum come out. Likewise, the taste is initially sweet and with banana like flavors. However, the finish is clean and mineral water like.
Light bodied and refreshing.
I hope I did the style justice with this review. It's like a lighter Hefeweizen.

Bottle dated 2026. Hefeweizen glass.

A: pours a crystal clear pale gold with streams and streams of carbonation and an extremely fluffy 4 finger head that subsides to one finger agree a while. Lacing was okay.

S: not as hefeweizeny as one might expect. Granted, this is fresh out of the fridge but I'm getting a little wheat, a bit of phenolic floral character, and a little Pilsner malt, but the whole affair is muted.

T: pretty flavorless arrival, then has some traditional clove, bubblegum and banana esters on the mid palate, but again the whole thing comes off as light. More like a Belgian wit than a Hefeweizen. Finish is mildly hoppy and loads cleaner than any hefeweizen I've had, downright helles-like. Improved as it warmed.

M: this and the appearance are where this style shines. The body is on the lighter side of midweight. Very active carbonation. Quite clean, which is atypical for wheat beers.

O: at first I thought I would love this because the slick syrupy character I often get in wheat beers is really off putting in hot weather. And the crisp clean nature and exquisite appearance I do love. However the fruit and spice character that is such a part of wheat beers is totally lacking. I'd definitely drink it again, but won't go out of my way to seek it out.

Bottle code "2395"

Appearance: Crystal clear beer with lots of visible carbonation. It is a light straw color with a fluffy pure white head. The head starts huge but maintains a short stature. It isn't leaving any lacing.

Aroma: Clove and a bit of bubblegum.

Taste: The taste is similar to the aroma but much less present. There is a very light sweet grain flavor also.

Mouthfeel: Amazing smoothness to the beer. Just a touch of a bitter hop character but the bitterness doesn't bite at all. The carbonation is plentiful but it doesn't bite either. Overall it is just a smooth drinking experience.

Overall: It's a good easy-drinking Kristalweizen. I wish I could get it fresh but this holds up very well for an import with some age under it. If you can get this fresh then I highly recommend it but even if your only option is to grab an import I don't think you will be disappointed.

Appearance - clear golden straw color with white head

Smell - clove, banana, wheat

Taste - much like the flagship hefe, notes of clove, banana and wheat

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, high level of carbonation, goes down smooth and refreshing, flavors of banana and Clove linger into the aftertaste

Overall - just every bit as impressive as the flagship hefeweisen, only difference is the filtering and the appearance. Highly recommended.

Price point - $2.99/16.9 oz bottle

The first of this style I've had, and it meets the style description to a tee. Certainly pours clear with thin near-white head that lasts about 1/2 finger. Aroma is banana and bubblegum. Flavor has the same with some mild clove and hint of hop bitter. Finish is clean and calls for more. Very drinkable, as all from this brewery.

Pale gold (4) with voluminous tight white foam; slow cap reduction; heavy lacing. Baked banana bread and a little spicy nose. Bread and spice with a whisper of clove; lite lemon/banana bread finish. Lite mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Excellent lite spice linger.

16.9.fl oz bottle poured into a Weihenstephan glass. Code 2395.

A - Crystal clear pale gold, with a two finger fluffy white head that retains for a while. Good lace retention.

S -Bread, slight metallic notes initially that went away,

T - Banana bread, mild spices, yeast.

M - Carbonation medium low, medium light feel.

O - I could see throwing a few of these back on a hot day. Would love to get my hands on some fresher versions. This style is exactly how it is described.

Gorgeous pale straw crystal clear body, plentiful swarms of bubbles rising, white half fizzy half velvety head. Smell is spice like white pepper, banana, faint bread/yeast. Flavor is full yet delicate, mirroring the nose with an added touch of clove and hay. Bone dry with mild bitterness on the finish. Light body, carbonation verges on abrasive but remains fun.
Damn delicious. Highly appealing, highly drinkable, big but light flavor, very refreshing, this is real craft beer.

I'm not sure I understand why this style exists but I'll take it.

Pretty much what you'd expect; a drier, less spicy, less fruity version of the Hefe. I'd like to have it during a warm day.

One of my favorite beers! Pours a beautiful clear yellow from a bottle into tall glass. Fluffy, creamy white head and nice lacing. Fragrant with a crispy, spicy taste of cloves and gentle banana. Great beer!

Poured into weissbier glass. It pours a crystal clear golden color with a thick, foamy, snow-white head and extensive lacing. It smells of wheat, yeast, grass, honey, banana, and cloves. The taste is bready with abundant cloves, and a nice touch of banana. There is a slight hop presence with just a hint of citrus and bitterness at the finish. All of the flavors blend flawlessly. This is a light, tangy, and refreshing beer and with a moderate ABV of 5.4%, it is very easy to drink. Overall, this weissbier is a delight to drink.

Poured from a 0.5 L bottle in to a Weihenstephaner Wheat beer glass. Bottled on code is 9275 (29th June 2015 if I'm decoding correctly).

Look -- A gentle pour gives three fingers of creamy white head that quickly settle down to one finger. The body is a straw color.

Smell -- Clove, banana, bubblegum, faint breadiness with some hints of bubblegum.

Taste -- Clove, banana, and bubblegum with faint breadiness. Light bitterness and some lemony tartness.

Feel -- Lively carbonation and light body have it feeling more pilsnerish on the palate. It has a light crispy mouthfeel and finishes fairly dry.

Overall -- It's a cleaned up and stripped down hefeweizen. I prefer my hefeweizens unfiltered but I can't fault the style simply for what it is. If you prefer a lighter mouthfeel but still want clove and banana in your beer this isn't a bad choice. While the clove and banana may be strictly speaking lighter compared to Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier the cleaned up nature of the beer makes them stand out more prominently as they aren't competing with as much, it's also much lighter on the palate.

Pours a crystal clear, light golden color. Nice 2 finger head, with solid retention.

Aroma is all about the wheat and banana. Little bit of citrus peaks through, but overall, it smells extremely close to that of a banana-flavored Laffy Taffy.

Nicely balanced beer. The wheat is present throughout the sip, but doesn’t fully peak until the end of the sip. A bit earthiness and grassiness. Some subtle notes of bubblegum and a kick citrus add a bit of complexity but not to the point that this beer is complicated. Easy drinking. On the higher end of a moderate amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is just such an easy drinking, delicious beer. Not something you need to sit and analyze, though you definitely can if you want! I see this pairing well with just about anything, though a summer BBQ with ribs and potato salad sounds just about perfect! It gets a 90.5/100

Straw color with brilliant clarity. Big sudsy head with exceptional retention. Fresh aroma of wheat, yeast and grass. Yeast is prominent on the palate. Wheaty, grainy flavor balanced by a subtle herbal, grassy German hop. Light body. Gritty, grainy texture. Lively carbonation. Crisp finish. Excellent brew. Tasty, refreshing and true to style.

A lighter take on Weihenstephaner's delicious unfiltered 'hefe' beer. Foamy 2 finger head. Aromas of banana and citrus with a hint of rolling tobacco. Taste predominantly a sweet banana-y flaour with touches of fresh bread and clove. More refreshing than the unfiltered version though this beer does lack some of the more robust and interesting elements of the hefe.

Knocked back three of these watching SNF on a blustery and rainy evening in Scotland, the warming quality was particulairly nice.

A 500ml bottle with a best before date of 25th February 2016, poured into a Riedel weizen glass.

Appearance: It poured a crystal clear golden straw colour with a big three finger white head that dissipated slowly leaving sticky lacing.

Aroma: Light aromas of wheat and banana with hints of clove and honey.

Taste: Starts grassy with some citrus lemon followed by banana and some wheat.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with medium to high carbonation.

Overall: This was not a bad beer but I definitely prefer the unfiltered version which has stronger aromas and taste.

500ml bottle into a tulip. Paid £2.70 for a single bottle.

Pours a crystal clear, light, golden straw-coloured body with a decent amount of fine visible carbonation. A tall, billowing, foamy, white head swiftly rises to three-fingers in height before reducing almost as quickly to a dense film that leaves behind thin, sticky lacing on the glass.

The modest nose leads with clean, crisp, fluffy wheat malt and faint notes of ripe banana. By comparison, a more substantial amount of pepper and clove follow, along with a little grassy bitterness that gives an aroma more spicy than fruity, but still light and subtle on the whole. Yeast esters are slightly more pronounced in the taste, sweet ripe banana leads upfront with malted wheat playing a supporting role. Mid palate, clove, pepper and spicy phenols override the fading wheat, peaking in a mild bite towards the back end with a small amount of grassy hops to give a crisp finish. In the mouth, plentiful carbonation and a medium body give a smooth and incredibly crisp feel, that finishes quick and clean on the palate.

Overall this is a pretty good beer. It’s insanely crisp, easy drinking and refreshing and would make a great session beer or accompaniment to food. Recommended.

Exactly as advertised, a subdued version of their Hefe. Mild clove and banana flavor in a crisp, refreshing beer. While I prefer the unfiltered version, this is still a strong go to when you want something a little lighter.

Pours a golden yellow, completely filtered color, with a stable, fluffy big head.

Smells of a dough bread infused yeast character with a whiff of clove and cardamon to it, ballanced by grassy hops, together with lots of straw. Reveals ripe banana underneath, adding to the spiciness of the yeast, without loosing its white bread malt qualities.

Has a very lively carbonation, with a soft mouthfeel, resulting in a very refreshing, light bodied beer pending between spices and malts.

Tastes almost as clean as the beer looks, while the initial yeast profile shines not only due to its pleasantly integrated spices, but also due to grassy hops and a certain amount of bready malts. The malts turn sweeter after the swallow, showcasing the beers flawless taste, enriching its yeast characteristics by additional balance and complexity, as well as a copper note, brought to the palate by the otherwise soft carbonation bubbles. Finishes with hay infused yeast, weaker on the spices than during the beginning, absorbed by profound, sweeter malts, pleasantly feathered by leafy hops.

Convinces by its perfect mixture of flavors, creating a fantastic balance, tied together by a very smooth mouthfeel, while remaining its refreshing impact.

Brilliant golden color with exceptional clarity. There's a massive bright white dense two inch head of foam. Moderate lacing. Clean wheat and banana ester aroma is very appealing. The flavor is a bit less banana ester than it's unfiltered cousin, but the wheat is definitely just as present. The mouth is exceptionally smooth and crisp. Very refreshing.

Look: Two fingers of frothy white head dissipate rather quickly to a short mound in the center of the glass as the rather active carbonation crashes to the surface. The color of this beer is a very crystal clear straw. No lacing.

Smell: Sweet banana and spicy clove esters at the begining fades behind a nice clean wheat and finishes with the aroma of the first few chomps of a Bazooka bubble gum.

Taste: Bubble gum right off the bat and sticks around through out the sip. Banana and wheat develop before any baking spice is present and the clove is very subtle.

Feel: For a style that is supposed to be rather light, this one has a bit to chew on. Active carbonation dances around the tongue.

Overall: I was kind of surprised by how much I liked this beer. I've been having a lot of very mediocre Hefes lately and wasn't really going into this one with huge expectations. But, alas, twas love at first sip. Big thumbs up and high fives to those currently accepting high fives.
