Notes & Commercial Description:

In our golden-yellow crystal-clear wheat beer the fresh citrus flavour harmonises very well with spicy banana notes. The fine sparkling gives it a tangy and animated appearance. Throughout summer and winter, it’s a prickling experience. It goes well with fish, seafood, white meat or it can be enjoyed as an aperitif. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Pours a five finger white head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving some lace. Clear amber color. Light carbonation and light-medium bodied. Lemon/yeast nose. Starts sweet lemony, with wheat and yeast flavor, finish is squeaky clean. Would be a great summer beer. $2.99 for a 500ml bottle from John's Grocery Iowa City, Ia.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a weizen glass.

Appearance - Pours a very pale straw color. The head is white and creamy with good retention. It leaves excellent lacing on the way down and as it settles to a thin cap of very creamy head. There is lots of carbonation activity within the beer...a flurry of bubbles racing toward the surface contantly.

Smell - Slightly skunky/sour malt character up front. Some slight bitterness from a touch of hops. Thankfully there is still some cooked banana aroma like the regular hefeweizen. Some very slight peppery/clove spiciness accompanies the banana aroma. Rich wheat aromas in the background, with a somewhat raw smelling malted barley character. Very little alcohol warmnth on the nose.

Taste - Wow. I must say after smelling it I wasn't expecting as much as I am right now tasting. It still has surprisingly strong and defined flavors despite being a kristal weizen. Lots of partly powdery banana flavors up front, slightly cooked (baked). Some slightly sour/bitter flavors from the hops and malt in the background. A clean but rich wheat flavor helps coat the palate all the way through the taste. The finish takes on a somewhat "coppery" metallic malt character, with a slowly richer cooked banana flavor with some fresh pear in the mix. The aftertaste is clean and dry with notes of banana, malt, and wheat balanced pretty evenly. Very slight warming effect from the mellow alcohol all the way through.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied but still has some weight to it. Lots of carbonation up front, with a somewhat strong bite from it right away. The edge fades quickly and becomes a refreshing and lively asset to the beer. Also some slickness from the wheat, but not altogether as smooth as I thought it would be.

Drinkability - Very refreshing. I would easily choose this over a Budweiser on a hot summer day. Whoever said that nothing beats a macro lager after you've been working out in the yard during the summer? Bollocks! This does many times over!

A very good kristal weizen. I'm quite impressed with this little dandy, but not too surprised at the quality considering what I've come to expect from this fine brewery. Definitely recommended, and an almost undefeatable treat to beat the heat! (Rhyming not intentional).

Beer pours a clear pale golden color with great carbonation and a large fluffy white head. Head doesn't stay forever but doesn't dissipate too quickly either. Aroma is a pretty straightforward weiss, banana, clove, yeast.

Taste is a good balance between banana and clove with pear and apple notes present and a crisp, light malt flavor.

Mouthfeel is very good, and drinkability is high. Refreshing, not overpowering, a well balanced beer, and another one of Germany's best from the Brauerei Weihenstephan.

Now this is a nice beer. I poured the bottle into my Weizen glass liberated from the English Gardens in Munchen.

A--Beautifully clear golden yellow with a nice head that does not dissipate. The bubbbles keep rising much like champagne. This is one good looking beer.

S-Very clean smelling for a Weiss beer. Subtle notes of clove and banana are detectable.

T-Clean and refreshing upon forst sip. Nice yeasty aftertaste, subtle hop flavour with clove and banana notes.

M-Nice carbonation here but not overly so.

D- I could go through alot of these.

This is one hell of a beer. I could see myself quaffing alot of these. If i close my eyes i can picture myself in the English Gardens. This is a great beer for all hefeweizen and weiss lovers

This pours golden yellow with great carbonation and brilliant white head. One of the best looking beers I've seen. The smell is alright, but is mostly wheaty malts. However, it does have a hint of melon to it. The taste is basically the smell with out the melon to make it interesting and the mouthfeel is plainly smooth and light bodied. Overally, I could session this, and might if I got it fresh on tap, but will pass from the bottle next time.

Pours to a nice golden yellow with good carbonation and a medium white head, which dissipates very quickly and leaves no lacing. Aroma and flavor were very strongly bread and wheat, with clove spice playing a big part in the taste as well. Unfortunately, palate was much too dry, and even slightly metallic. But a good beer.

Crystal clear straw yellow color with a substantial pure white creamy head that fades slowly to just a thin layer bt continues to leave some decent lacing. Plenty of tiny bubbles continue through the glass.

The aroma is cloves, bananas and some bready wheat and grass.

The taste starts with a bready wheat followed immediately by cloves. Hints of bananas come in the middle. The finish is peppery, spicy, grassy and slightly dry.

Medium bodied, smooth and very easy to drink. Excellent with food.

A clear, crisp, bright gold with great head retention and good lacing. The smell is a little clove and lemon with some breadiness with only a slight aromatic banana. The taste is clovey and lemony with a slight breadiness. Mouthfeel is crisp and very carbonated, almost too crisp. Overall it's very good. I would have another.

Wow...crystal clear pale yellow with tons of tiny carbonation continually seeking the surface...snow white craggy head melts to very sticky lacing...really pretty.
Aroma is bubblegum and biscuit...drying yeast and spice scents very apparent as it warms up.
Taste starts with a softness of malt that quickly becomes the sweetness of banana and cloves and again, bubblegum...followed with a spicy pepper type bite of wheat...very spicy in fact.
Aftertaste remains with the spiciness....causing a pleasant drying.
Wonderful Kristall to style.
Clean, crisp, very complex yet balanced, and refreshing.

This beer was tasted in a weizen glass from the 500mL bottle.

This beer pours a crystal clear golden with a decent white head that leaves a nice film and little lace. The smell of sweet wheat and pale malt. The taste is also sweet and malty with wheat flavor but not much by the way of hops. The mouthfeel is pretty good as well, not overwhelming. Overall, just an average forgettable beer.

Purchased in a Weihenstephan Variety Pack - 5 different 500ml Weihenstephan brews plus a .5L Weihenstephan weizen glass.

Poured into the weizen glass. Truly is "crystal clear" - gold in color with impressive carbonation. Towering head soon settled into a less towering head, then eventually a nice collar that persisted throughout the beer. Very minimal lacing - a rather fizzy head.

Smells...like a dumbed down hefe.

Tastes...like a dumbed down hefe.

Overall - Hefeweizens are not my favorite style. I really don't like bananas, so the phenols get to me. This was basically a dumbed down hefe, so to be honest, I actually preferred it to a typical hefe because a lot of the hallmark character was missing.

This beer really did go nicely with dinner and I'm glad to have tried it, but to be honest I'm not really sure who this beer is for - hefe fans will want the real thing, yeast and all, and non-hefe fans like myself will want something altogether different.

Pale yellow/straw. Nice persistent froth.
Aroma notes of clove, nutmeg.... subtle but intriguing.
Flavour is lemony, with spicy clove finish. A light citrus tang.
Crisp & refreshing, very light touch of bitterness.
Drank this with Erdinger hefe, and Schofferhofer Krystal. This was the clear winner.

A: Straw coloured. Pours with a beautiful long-lasting head and a very nice effervescence; there is a constant stream of bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass till the last drop.
S: Sweet, grassy, bread and a hint of banana; can't detect much clove in this one.
T: Sweet banana and grassy.
M: Very lively with a light body. Very well-balanced and smooth. Carbonation is on the high side.
D: Nice weissen although a bit grassy but I'm sure this one could grow on me.

First time trying this style, but I knew what to expect. I assume this is the Weihenstephaner Weisse filtered.

A-Beautiful lager golden, clear body with a sticy white wheat head. Steady carbonation coming from the bottom.

S-Huge clove, wheat smell. A grassy, sweet kick makes you want a sip badly.

T-Great weisse beer taste with a nice clove kick at the finish. The fruitiness is subdued, but noticable. A very mild hop presence is tough to detect over the wheat.

M-Tough to be much smoother than this. The cabonation leaves a little sharpness to the body, but it goes down with little resistance.

D-Wouldn't be a problem to drink this all night and day. I am a sucker for a good weisse, kristal or otherwise.

Filtered or not, this beer is awesome and extremely easy to drink. Could be a great "Crossover" beer to the unfortunate BMC ones.

Pours a crystal/kristall clear gold in the 0.5 SOHM Erdinger Weissbrau glass with a stiff white pillowy head. Banana, wheat and bready aromas a little dimished by filterings as is the over all flavor. Less sweet that the standard heffe with lighter mouthfeel from the missing proteins. Still in all a very drinkable summer offering from Weihenstephan that some may prefer until they aquire the taste of the fuller unfiltered version.

It pours a bright straw yellow, glinting and as clear as a mountain stream, like, well, kristall. Three fingers of pure white wispy head ebb slowly to foamy hillocks. Grins of lacing smile along the inaide of the glass.

The aroma delivers a soft grainy, grassy sweetness, with blueberry and yeasty dough. Banana and clove play off of a peppery noble tang.

Upon sipping, there's a twist of sweet malt and wheat which quickly crisps out to a dry apple tartness, which is buoyed by a tangy taste of yeast. Clove and a sassy pepper note spice up the middle, and a mellow, grassy grain redux fades to a gentle bitter lingering finish. It's a solid, very enjoyable flavor profile that implies history.

Pretty much light bodied, the grain and carbonation combine with a nice glow the product on the palate.

First, I have to say, this is a very pretty colored beer, though a bit mainstream these days. And while what followed was just a bit lesser, that's not a damning thing. It has the crisp wheat thing going on, and the ABV is nothing intimidating, so that means it goes down smooth and easy. So it's summertime, and the weissbier's fine.

Sample at Whole Foods Market. Pours a clear pale gold color with a thin white head and fair lacing. Wheaty aroma along with a noticeable banana smell. Medium-bodied and smooth with flavors of wheat, banana and light spice. The finish is clean, wheaty and a little watery. Light spice and wheat aftertaste. Fairly enjoyable overall.

Poured from a ½ l bottle to my big swirl hefe glass. Very nice pale yellow and crystal clear. Some nice carbonation to push up a respectable white head that fades to minimal lace.

The smell is classic hefe, very nice yeast and bread like wheat. Hints of some spice.

The taste is really nicer then I suspected. Lots on cloves, Then lemon a,d a slight banana finish. Some peppery notes mixed into the finish.

Mouthfeel was just slightly thiner then I like. Bet the carbonation was right there, very good.

Drinkability was also very good I could have this just about any time. Mk

Poured from a 500 ml. bottle. Left a two finger plus head that quickly dissipated to just surface skim, left no lacing. Body was a pale yellow gold, even a slight green yellow tint to it, and of course, it was perfectly translucent, with columns of tiny bubbles.

Smell - creamy wheat and some biscuity malt, some subdued banana. Hint of grassy hops.

Taste - similiar to the smell. Creamy wheat, toasty and biscuity and slightly caramel malt, slight banana, finishing with a wash of slightly sour grassy hops, and a final hint of banana. Not nearly as full, creamy, or as intensely estery or phenolic as an unfiltered hefe-weizen, but still pretty good.

Mouthfeel - somewhat full, smooth, low to moderate cabonation. Definitely not as full and creamy as regular unfiltered hefe-weizen, but still satisfying.

Drinkability - good mellow beer for a really hot day, easy drinking, fairly satisfying, rather sessionable.

Poured into Weihenstephan weizen glass.
Poured golden with slow, steady streams of tiny-bubbled carbonation that produced a large, fluffy white head that eventually became a thin, solid, well-retained lace.
The smell was of citrusy lemon and banana/clove. It was a clean, crisp aroma.
The taste was of malty banana/clove - but not thick. It had a subtle but sharp wheat bite. The alcohol came out a bit. Overall, it was pretty basic, but good.
The mouthfeel was fluffy and fairly creamy. Some of the flavors thinned a bit, but they, esp. the wheat, stuck to the tongue.
It's a good brew from a great brewery. Personally, I would choose the hefe-weiss over this if given a choice, but this one is certainly worth drinking!

Pours a filtered pale yellow with lively carbonation rising to a quickly fading white fluffy head. Smell is of slight banana and clove with hints of a nice yeasty quality in the nose as well. Taste is dry and crisp and very easy to drink. This seems to be a "light" or toned down hefeweizen. While it is a very good and refreshing brew, I keep thinking how much better the hefeweizen is.

oh, my. god. i am so happy the world cup is in germany. my local stores all have a special "campaign" with a lot of new, foreign, and plenty of german beers being promoted. i've seen some that have made me mildly happy, (ooh, newcastle brown). but today i saw an endcap with all weihenstephaner beers, 4 different styles! i was unashamedly vocally appreciative, and i noticed the locals noticing me but i didn't care. what a cool sight.

my first kristal weizen. i have tried - and thoroughly enjoyed - three of the other beers made by this, the oldest brewery in the world. and to finish the story of the first paragraph, all the others have been through mail order from a special internet store. this was my first time seeing it at a normal store, in person. this is my fourth, and this ancient brewery is threatening to become my favorite. i just love the label, damn it makes me thirsty.

after reading the beer style description here on BA, i would say this fits it perfectly. looks like i would expect - like a filtered hefeweizen, crystal clear, highly fizzy, beautiful huge head. smell is slightly muted due to mosquito-repelling smoke in the air, (oh my god, how am i going to review for the next few months, with a dulled sense of smell or full of bites? you see, in japan these fuckers get you in or out of your house. they know no bounderies). but i can still pick up great weiss bier scents. spicy, banana, i guess there's really not as much wheat as a normal hefeweizen. so the smell is not as good as it's more famous, higher rated brother, but it's still good.

taste and mouthfeel are very predictable. just what you would expect. it's crystal clear! smooth. perfect balance, highly thirst-quenching and tasty. interesting note: this would probably be a good beer to give to a total rookie, as it is closer in appearance to a boring macro. as opposed to a cloudy, foggy hefeweizen which can definitely scare some noobs. i have a new mission for converting my macro-swilling co-workers!

A summer favorite! It looks like a Miller Lite but it pours like its Hefe sibling in a weizen glass with a substantial head. Very smooth. Low hop notes. Very clean. Without the suspended yeast and proteins a lot of the citrus and fruit flavors are missing. Some people may find this too bland if a DIPA is a favorite.

Crystal clear pale straw color with a hefty pure white head on top and energetic carbonation. Phenolic clove and banana aroma - dry spicy fruit. Clean, fresh estery clove taste with soft wheat malts. Finishes with a little banana and yeasty spice. Crisp, lively mouthfeel makes for an especially refreshing beer...there's more body than it looks.

Very tasty filtered hefeweizen and the first I've ever had of this particular style. Super easy to drink and refreshing. Do these guys make a bad beer?

Light, pale and clear with a big white head. Looks just as I imagined it would. Refreshing aroma of spiced banana, wheat and phenols. Taste matches perfectly. Nice mouthfeel with a refreshing carbonation. Smooth slick, and slight dry and very mild bitterness through the finish. Goes down ultra easily.

Nice mild and easy going for any hot summer day. Pleasant and refreshing taste.
