Sampled last night also on 10/1/14. Comes in a single 500ml (16.9 ounce) bottle for $2.99. From the World's Oldest Brewery (1040 AD). Bottle chille down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a .5l 'Weihenstephaner 2014 World Cup' veissber vase glass.

This 'Kristalweizen' ( From BA: "A filtered version of a Hefeweizen, showcasing bright and clear bodies from pale straw to light amber. Overall character will be more clean and softer on the palate, and the common banana and phenols will be more subtle.") pours a clear light golden-yellow in color with a thick 3+-finger foamy white head that finally settles down to a good 3mm or so. Lots of lacing is seen when sipped, even ring-like and sticks to the sides of the glass. The aroma is of wheat but doesn't look like one and has some spice in there also of bananas and cloves. The same with the taste with some nice sweetness. Lighter to medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Very tasty with no bitter or harsh aftertaste at all. Never had this style of brew before but it is good. PROSIT!

Bottle purchased at Wegmans on East Avenue in Rochester, NY.

Pours a clear light golden yellow, with a voluminous head, about 3.5 inches, and a lot of lacing.

Smells like a wheat beer, doesn't look like one at all. Magic! Typical strong smells of banana, clove, and other spices. Not quite as strong, aroma-wise, as their regular hefeweizen, but still quite nostrilly pleasing.

Tastes like sweet malt, candied banana, cloves, bit of bubble gum. As it warms, it gets a bit skunky, unfortunately. Drink it fast, while it's cold.

This one has a fairly light body, with a large amount of carbonation, and a crisp, spicy mouthfeel.

I believe this is my first kristalweizen, and it's pretty solid. I think I generally prefer hefes, though.

We pour a bottle into our tall Bell’s Weizen glasses. It gives the faintest yellowed straw coloring, and puts forth a solid three finger head of white, foamy bubbles. This shows nice retention, cinching down into ridges of lacing. No haze or sediment is noted, and carbonation appears to be highly active. The aroma is comprised of white sugars, red apple fruitiness, crisp crystal, pale, wheat, and ricey adjuncty metallic maltiness. The nose otherwise fills with warming clovey spice, white chalk, hints of freshly zested lemon peel, bright and sweet bready esters, gummy adhesive, and burnt Christmas ham. The taste follows with a clean, malty flavoring. It opens with dense but crisp pale, crystal, and wheaty malts, much like the aroma, and ends with sweet brown banana esters, burlap, brown grassiness, pear and white grape fruitiness, soured acidity of grain, cloven spice, birch, aloe, and a final but distinct Rice Krispie cereal graininess. The body is light to medium, and the carbonation is on the active side, giving a soft prickle to the mucosa. Slurp, smack, cream, froth, and pop are all decent, and the mouth is left cooled and somewhat creamed and coated. Crisp dryness follows. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks easily.

Overall, this is a first for us, in that we’ve never rated a Kristallweissbier. The resounding feeling is that this would be best served at a large festival in Germany, with long wooden tables, and beer maidens serving it up in huge, sloshing mugs. The glugging type of swill. The malt profile is unique in its richness, but it does sing of your standard Weissbier with all of its soured, metallic wheatiness, and watered afterflow. Residual sugars are also increased, leaving more for the feel than for the taste. This was a welcomed introduction to the style, and we shall look for other beers of the style that parallel this type of authenticity and craftsmanship

This is an excellent example of the style; in fact I might suspect whoever wrote the style description may well have been drinking on of these at the time.
