Tried this a couple days ago. Just such a great flavorful beer. Not that bitter and I can now remember the banana notes. I almost confused it with a buttery quality, that tasted great, but makes more since of banana. Over all great beer and great brewer. Also one of the best looking beers i have seen in a while. (313 characters)

A: Poured from the bottle into a Weihenstephaner glass. Light golden and perfectly clear with a 3 finger head. Gorgeous.

S: Bananas and bubble gum

T: Bananas, bubblegum, and clove. Spicy on the tongue and oozing with flavor. Lingering yeasty banana notes.

M: Light bodied with a semi dry finish.

O: Just a perfectly crafted beauty. Can easily drink a few of these at 5.4% in the summer time on the porch but I'm fine with drinking this in the blizzard right now too. Not a fan of wheat beers really, but this is magnificent. (528 characters)

Serving: Bottle into pint glass
Served: 25 Jan 2014

Appearance: A rich golden yellow, crystal clear beer that pours with a foamy white head which slowly dissipates. Leaves some lacing, but not too much.

Smell: Much like one would expect, the traditional Weihenstephaner banana-cloviness comes out in the nose.

Taste: The banana-clove flavor is the most pronounced in this beer, again, as one would expect. This one is far crisper in flavor than its unfiltered cousins, leading to a much drier beer.

Mouthfeel: Bubbly like champagne. The carbonation is perfect on this one, and leads to a lot of additional body to make up for the lack of suspended yeast as in regular hefeweizens.

Overall: Finally, a Kristallweizen I can get behind. This one maintains all of the banana-clove flavors traditional to the style and rather than tasting like a diluted hefeweizen, this one drinks crisp and clean leading to a dry, but refreshing finish. A great beer, and the best Kristallweizen I've had to date. (998 characters)

DATE TASTED: December 31, 2013... GLASSWARE: Weihenstephaner weizen glass...OCCASION: home fore New Year's Eve and hoping this beer delivers like champagne... APPEARANCE: as advertised, crystal gold, mildly effervescent base; thick, cumulous white head; good, persistent, wavy lacing... AROMA: banana, clove, bubblegum and yeast; unmistakably wheaty... PALATE: bubbly, beefy body--yet light and fluid; crisp and clean, with an almost medium-bodied presence...TASTE: bubblegum esters front and center; apple, pear and some clove--an enjoyable experience... OVERALL: a fantastic filtered version of the vividly unfiltered offering; a great combination of drinkability and character; champagne indeed! its refreshing zest pairs well with light cheeses and crackers... (764 characters)

Briefly.

Cannot understand how I have not reviewed this yet.

Maginificent fill into the named glass.... Head forms and stays despite minimal noise on opening. Muted banana lollies and clove on nose, but springs into life on taste.
Mouthfeel to die for, only Weihenstephaner seem to be able to get such delightful carbonation.

I'd go their Hefe every time, but a minor niggle in comparison (391 characters)

I am not an expert with this style of beer so I am rating it per my tastes and not so much how it ranks against others. The beer poured a lighter golden fairly clear with thick head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent carries clove and biscuit. The taste is strong clove with some banana and bread. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with smooth carbonation. Overall the beer is decent but I would not drink a lot of it. (423 characters)

Pours a clear straw color with a massive head that slowly receded to a thick cap. A lot of lacing is left down the glass.

Not much difference between this beer and the hefeweizen. Still get a lot of yeast aromas. Cloves and bananas as well as a healthy dose of wheat.

Get more wheat flavor in this beer compared to the hefeweizen but otherwise features some excellent yeast flavors.

Does not feel as "chewy" as the unfiltered beer. Feels lighter but still expertly carbonated.

Better than 95% of wheat beers on the planet. Only eclipsed by a few hefeweizens. (563 characters)

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a golden color with a fizzy white head of two fingers. The head fades relatively quickly, fading to leave a lighter level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is mainly of a grainy and bready smell mixed with aromas of some sweeter caramel and a bit of light fruits (banana, orange, and pear). Rounding out the aroma are some quite light but detectable aromas of some spice of clove and coriander as well as a yeasty cake aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with a slightly grainy and moderately caramel sweetened flavor. As the taste advances some of the yeast and spice greet the tongue with the caramel fading but being replaced by some lighter fruit flavors of banana and citrus. More toward the end, a somewhat grassy flavor comes to the tongue as well as the grainy tastes seeming to amplify to some extent, with the mix of flavors in the end, leaving a rather nice clean and malty flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side for a brew of 5.4 % abv with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. Both are rather nice for the blend of grainy malt, sweet, and lightly hopped flavors of the beer and make for a very easy drinking brew.

Overall – A nice very easy drinking brew with some great blend of tastes making it a nice flavorful drinker. (1,407 characters)

M- high carbonation with light body

Appearance: Pale yellow color with a quickly dissipating, creamy 2 finger head. Lots of bubbles. Lacing is slick; won't really hold to glass. 3

Smell: Really subdued out of the bottle, but once swirled, things lit up. Big bananas and clove. Yeast, wheat, bubble gum and some slight grassy notes. 4.5

Taste: Wheat, yeast, and sour lemon up front, followed by banana. Finish is bready with hints of ripe banana and lemon. 3.5

Mouthfeel: Medium light body with crisp carbonation. Dry, lightly sour finish. 3.25

Overall: This was just ok to me. I really enjoyed the smell, but that's about it. I can't see myself buying again. 3.25 (631 characters)

S: Light banana and clove scents. Also, some yeasty and grassy scents as well.

T: Very similar to the nose.

M: Medium light body with medium carbonation. Nothing really special here.

O: A fantastic beer. This tastes like a 50/50 mix of their Original Premium and Hefeweissbier put together and it executes perfectly. (430 characters)

Pours light golden in color with a good frothy white head that has great retention.

Smell has some slightly sweet grainy notes forward along with some banana clove phenols and wheat notes.

Taste follows the nose and has grainy wheat flavors forward and finishes with some clove and banana like phenols.

Mouthfeel is light crisp and highly carbonated. Very refreshing. (372 characters)

Bottle states "5133", no date though.

A: Pours a crystal-clear gold. Big light and fizzy white head. Head sticks around quite well. Once faded it leaves decent streaky tufts of lacing.

S: Big wheaty aroma with lots of banana. Mild crisp citrus. Hint of bubblegum?

T: Again, big wheaty aroma. Sweet graininess throughout - almost corn-like at times. Mild citrus up front, a little grass in the finish. Hints of banana and bubblegum throughout.

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: Delicious brew. Simple but dangerously drinkable. (530 characters)

Poured a clear light golden color in a Weizen glass with a 4F head which resolves itself
within a few minutes. Carbonation bubbles from the bottom of the glass

Aroma: heavy clove and light lemon. The clove is not as pronounced after 5 minutes.

The mouth feel: crisp clear finish, with some bitterness. The beer is quite carbonated, more than some of their other Hefeweissbiers I have tasted.

Taste: lighter clove.

Overall, this is a very good beer, but I prefer some of the other beers from this brewery.
The bitterness and lack of strong clove make it less enjoyable. I prefer more blandness, less carbonation, mouthfeel and bitterness in this beer (653 characters)

Poured from 500 ml bottle into a weizen glass.

A: Hay coloration with a giant, cascading, foamy, white head and continually rising effervescence. Head craters but never fully dissipates. Some spotty yet persistent

S: Hay, with a little lemon citrus.

T: Sourdough, light amount of honey, and a very light amount of lemon citrus.

M: Light, crisp, and pristine.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is excellent. Giant, persistent head, neverending effervescence, and some nice lacing. Nose is hay with a little citrus. Pungent sourdough accentuated with a little honey and lemon citrus. Overall, this is a great quaff. (615 characters)

Enjoyed out of a 500 mL brown bottle with no discernible dating that I can find. Poured into a classic Hefeweizen glass.

Appearance - All the gilded beauty of Weihenstephaner's hefeweizen, but filtered, for a crystal-clear body the color of golden straw. Lazy but consistent bubbles of carbonation rise up through the body, replenishing a towering head of five fingers. Unlike the rockier head of a hefeweizen, the bubbles on this one are very fine, like champagne carbonation, but with much greater retention. As it starts to fade, it leaves curtains of foam along the sides of the glass while the center of the foam retains longer than the ring between the lacing and the center, leaving a sort of moat around a pillow of foam in the middle. Over time, some of the bubbles grow larger and burst, leaving a swiss cheese effect on the lacing.

Smell - Predominantly fruity phenols, but with less sweetness than the typical banana. I'd suggest that it's more similar to plantain, and some faint bubblegum notes sneak in at the end as well. I will say this--while this is certainly to style, I miss the more rustic elements the unfiltered wheat brought to the party. The grain is hard to detect in the smell, but let's see how it works with the taste.

Taste - Here I get more of a sense of the wheat, along with some nice bright lemongrass notes to compliment the sweeter phenolic components. The wheat characteristic reminds me of a hefeweizen the same way a slice of white or wheat bread might remind me of the bolder multigrain or whole-grain bread. It's there, but more subdued and polite. I also detect some clove in the taste where I did not in the aroma.

Mouthfeel - The filtration takes away some of the creamy element to the beer, so now the mouthfeel is a bit more prickly, like how a crisp pilsener might feel. Body is light and carbonation level is high.

Overall, my first sampling of the style, so it seemed fitting to try one from the king of kristalweizen's unshaven cousin, the hefeweizen. Personally, I think I would choose the latter for just sitting and drinking, but for fine dining, the kristalweizen is an excellent idea to take the place of wine, due to it's refinement as well as the fact that it would work well with a number of different cuisines. (2,275 characters)

A- Crystal clear golden, clean, with a 2 finger white head that has outstanding retention and pretty sticky lacing.

S- Very impressive. Wheat malts, grain, and lots of intense clove. Fresh banana bread.

T- Clove and wheat again. Bready hints of banana. A little more subdued than expected based on the nose, but still a smooth, balanced brew as to be expected from this brewery. Hoped for a little more spice. No bitterness.

M- clean, crisp, and refreshing. Lighter body as the style dictates.

O- A nice German wheat that is quite refreshing to have on a hot summer day by the pool. This brewery just simply knows what they are doing. A fantastic take on the style. A lighter, cleaner version of their hefe.

Bottle poured into a bier stein

Thick, dense white fist atop a crystal clear golden liquid. A few strands of carbonation wave through the beer. Plenty of thick , foamy lacings hang on the walls of the glass.

Faint aroma of bananas and hint of citrus.

Classic weissbier taste with a hint of bananas. Smooth light to light medium mouth feel. Clean after taste . Very, very drinkable. This is a bier made for summer beer gardens . From a 500 ml bottle (date code on the bottle was illegible) into a hefe glass.

A-A normal pour produces nearly three fingers of long-lasting, dense, white foam. Retention is quite good and and there is a bit of lacing left behind. The brew is, as advertised, crystal clear with a good bubble show through the light yellowish-golden liquid.

S-The smell is a pleasant mix of doughy lemon curd, banana bread, and citrus flavors of orange and lemon. There is a bit of wheat and spice in there, too. Nothing off or wild, but nice balance and good intensity.

T-The taste tracks the smell pretty closely with a balanced mixture of citrus and lightly, doughy, pale malts up front. The finish is more wheat forward and grainy, and offers a bit of spice and bitterness to dry things out a touch. This is well-balanced.

M-The feel is very light weight, but the substantial carbonation, while soft, provides some backbone to the brew on the palate. Drinkable, but not airy.

O-This is a tasty beer and certainly an enjoyable brew on a summer day. Nothing is out of the ordinary; it looks like it is supposed to, it smells like it is supposed to, it tastes like it supposed to, and it feels like it is supposed. You can't ask for more than that. (1,238 characters)

A filtered version of a Hefeweizen, showcasing bright and clear bodies from pale straw to light amber. Overall character will be more clean and softer on the palate, and the common banana and phenols will be more subtle.

That is the descprition of a kristalweizen...

Now you taste this beer and you go.... holy shit.... that description is dead on...

Now the question is... did the brewery brew this beer according to the description? Or was the description made because of this beer?

Overall If you liked there heff than this is a cleaner criper lighter yet different feel option. In fact you cannot really compare this to the heff because its in a class all itself. Descriptions mentioned in others reviews and the bros. Is dead on. I am not going to get into certain taste and smell specifics. However, you would be doing yourself a great injustice if you were not to try this beer... its frigging $2.50... I'm amazed.... this brewery is one of less than a handfull of breweries where I love all there offerings.

Btw... best damn looking beer EVEEEERRR!!!!.... golden yellow.. impossibly perfect as the hue is gloriously present yet when put up to the eye you can see straight thru it (personally I could see the white of my fence and the marble colored pieces around the ring of my fire pit.... from 12 feet away). Thick 2 finger cotton white pillowy head that you could float a tomato on....lmao.... decent lacing and ring stuck around thruout... the overall super light feel of the beer mixed in with super light carbonation and that clean, crisp, juicy but dry finish. Just exactly what you would expect.

A great summertime beer and a well rounded perfectly balanced beer. I rate this an oh my god 4.9 because I rate on style. Kristalweizens are not my favorite style. But I will not compare this beer to my love for stouts or DiPa'S .. yea.. this beer is not better than some beers I've tried but its the best of the bunch...

And that'll do pig... (1,964 characters)

Served from the bottle into a weizen glass

A- Poured a very light yellow color, streaming carbonation, very high clarity, giant fluffy bright white head that left some spotty lace. Probably the lightest color and clearest beer I have ever had.

S- Huge bubblegum, banana, clove, and bready malts. Very clean, fragrant, and fruity.

T- Big bubblegum, banana, and fruity notes. Lots of sweet biscuity and bready malts, light floral notes, and some clove.

M- Quite smooth, soft carbonation, and medium to light body.

O- Reminds me of their Hefeweizen (which I still prefer) except with a lot more sweetness and cleaner. (622 characters)

16.9 oz bottle was poured into a large tulip glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a two finger head that reduced to a puffy layer. It is a clear golden straw yellow with bubbles coming up through the middle of the glass. Nice lacing on the glass as the beer was drank too.

Smell: Bready, clove, spicy, banana, and yeasty. Very similar to their hefeweizen.

Taste: Tastes the same way it smells.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, light to medium bodied, a little chewy, and medium carbonation.

The #1 ranked Kristalweizen here on BA.

Served in a DC Brau tulip.

A: Poured a straw color, lots of bubbles in this puppy, and with a frothy, filmy white head.

S: Delectable fresh banana... more like banana pudding and a bit of cracked coriander. Not too sweet. About right.

T: Just like a world class hefe. Nope, not an Americanized version. This had that German malty zing. This also had sort of a creme brulee-esque finish.

M: Not to sweet, not too spicy, not overpowering. Well, except for the ridiculous lacing.

O: World class stuff, especially in the summer. (570 characters)
