Poured into a pint glass. Dark brown with a thick fluffy 3 inch off-white head. Good retention too. Couldn't see much carbonation going on but thats because the beer was so dark, even when held up to the light. Good lacing during the drinking period.

Aroma of cinammon and brown sugar.

Medium sweet flavor of caramel with an alcohol kick. Not much hop bitterness but a rubbery bitterness did kick in, just enough to keep the malts in check.

Medium-full bodied. A slightly mellow caramel aftertaste remained on the tounge between drinks.

Good drinkability but a little strong to have more than one. Don't want that alcohol burning a hole in my gut. Damn good though and will have it again.

16.9 oz. poured into pilsener

L: looks black with a huge (3-inch) head of thick tan foam, but it's crystal clear dark amber -- up to sunlight, it looks almost purple ... very dark red. the head is crazy; i need to control the pour just a bit more because this brew pushes up fast foam; it sticks and laces a little

S: lots of stuff here ... dusty molasses covers it all, but there's raisins, caramel, toffee, some dark-toasted grain and at times as it warms, good old standard sweet biscuits/bread malt. pretty sweet.

T: raisins, dark bread, some grain but doesn't taste as sweet as it smells -- in fact, the very first note on the tongue in my mind was "salt". very "roasted" ... it's almost tasting smoked (I know it's not, but ...) and very dark in the vein of Celebrator, not the lighter Salvator flavors of nuts and sweet biscuits. this is definitely roasty ... fully hides the 7.4% ABV

F: can lose its carbonation pretty easy, but if you get in the glass gently, it holds onto quite a bit to keep it drinkable despite being a thick chunk of dark-malt taste.

O: smells sweet and light, tastes dark -- very interesting and complex beer. i'm not a big raisin fan, and this definitely has at least a passing acquaintance with raisins, so i should hate it. but I don't. i LOVE the smell and keep hoping the taste mimics it 1-to-1; it doesn't, but i'll keep letting it warm up. :)

i still prefer the lighter doppelbock style of Paulaner's Salvator, but this is obviously a great brew. a little like a good stout in a lighter weight form -- definitely toasted dark and raisiny

Poured from a bottle into an Erdinger weissbier glass. The pour is crystal-clear, but very dark brown and sports about a finger of fine tan head. The nose has tons of rich malt and bready, crusty, glorious melanoidins. It also has just a hint of dark fruit. It's terrific, but not quite as complex a nose as Celebrator.

The beer has a medium body, a firm feel, and an intensely malty flavor that is just divine. Tons of fresh bread, figs, dark fruit, brownies, and hazelnuts. Malt, malt, and more malt! The beer takes on just a hint of char on the back of the palate, which combines with the hops to balance out the sweetness with some bitter notes. You're left with a lingering flavor of toast and maple syrup.

Overall, simply a delightful beer and certainly a classic of the style. I've enjoyed it a few times, but finally got around to reviewing it. A finer-drinking malt bomb you are very unlikely to find. I think I prefer Celebrator just slightly, but this is still delicious.

Poured into a tulip
Look - really dark amber brown. Poured with lots of strong frothy head that stays around.
Smell - smells like a germain beer. Very malty backbone. Slight licorice smell.
Taste - heavy body. Slightly sweet. Very malty.
Feel - smooth velvety thickness with a good amount of carb but almost taste like a nitrous.
Overall - incredible doppelbock. Might be the best I've had.
