Finally! Another Weihenstephan brew to review that isn't alkoholfrei, I was worried I was never going to find another one of their beers to review, which is high praise for any brewery. Well I finally bagged a Korbinian, and with the coolest label coming out of Weihenstephan I'm looking forward to the taste of awesome.
Poured from a 500ml bottle into a stein.
A: Presents a clear, deep auburn with a firm 2cm off-white/beige head.
S: Bread, dark fruits (mainly raisin), honeyed figs and brown sugar. The bread character gives it a big fat malt back bone, which is very tempting however one can sense the impending sugar punch.
T: All of the above - a hearty bread slice with dark fruits, honeyed figs with brown sugar sprinkled on top. It sounds like a recipe for disaster but when it comes to beer this is a liquid bread paradise. Delicious in its chunky glory. Minor medicinal bitter hops make an appearance in the finish.
M: Medium bodied with a light but dense carbonation. Weihenstephan have always been spot on when it comes to the feel of their brews and this one is no different.
D: It's big, it's bready and I wish it was as readily available as their other beers because this is a masterpiece in how to brew an imposing dark ale. My hat goes off to you again Weihenstephan, you magnificent bastards! I would quite happily add this to my regular fridge rotation if it were easier to find.
Food match: Mainly a dessert beer but not too sweet that it wouldn't pair with a main course either, perhaps game meats like venison or even kangaroo. Also could work with char-grilled zucchini, mushrooms and eggplant for my vegan brethren.

The bottle is so us usual and beautiful, I had to try it. Poured from a bottle into a Pilsner, at a temperature between the fridge and room temp. Color is a crystal clear strawberry red with the slightest brown tinge when held up to intense light. Thin, tan head, nice lacing. Aroma is yeasty, with roasted malt and caramel sweetness, with mild floral hops. Flavor is again yeasty, roasted malt, toffee sweetness, with a slightly piney finish. Mouthfeel is medium thin, and a bit foamy. This is a style that I do not understand (doppelbock), so I am rating it just as an enjoyable brew and experience. On that basis, I will say it is a very good to outstanding lager, well worth sampling. And this one has a bear, not a goat on the label.
