This is a nice one.

Appearance: Dark brown, looks suspiciously like Coca-Cola in my pilsener glass.

Aroma: A tad (but just a tad) on the weak side in my book. Nicely malty and caramelly.

Taste: Very nice! Raisins, caramel, a subtle but solid Noble Hop presence, nutty and toasty. I gave it a 4.2, which is not an option on the BA scale.

Palate: Spritzy.

Overall: It's no Curator or Celebrator to be sure, but for the price (much cheaper than either of those!) it can't be beat.

I used it in the preparation of Doppelbock-Thai pork balls served with a spicy peanut sauce, with snap peas and rice noodles. A glass of it along with the meal was a divine pairing. This would be good with an array of desserts as well.

Poured from a bottle into an Erdinger weissbier glass. The pour is crystal-clear, but very dark brown and sports about a finger of fine tan head. The nose has tons of rich malt and bready, crusty, glorious melanoidins. It also has just a hint of dark fruit. It's terrific, but not quite as complex a nose as Celebrator.

The beer has a medium body, a firm feel, and an intensely malty flavor that is just divine. Tons of fresh bread, figs, dark fruit, brownies, and hazelnuts. Malt, malt, and more malt! The beer takes on just a hint of char on the back of the palate, which combines with the hops to balance out the sweetness with some bitter notes. You're left with a lingering flavor of toast and maple syrup.

Overall, simply a delightful beer and certainly a classic of the style. I've enjoyed it a few times, but finally got around to reviewing it. A finer-drinking malt bomb you are very unlikely to find. I think I prefer Celebrator just slightly, but this is still delicious.

Poured into a tulip
Look - really dark amber brown. Poured with lots of strong frothy head that stays around.
Smell - smells like a germain beer. Very malty backbone. Slight licorice smell.
Taste - heavy body. Slightly sweet. Very malty.
Feel - smooth velvety thickness with a good amount of carb but almost taste like a nitrous.
Overall - incredible doppelbock. Might be the best I've had.

500 ml bottle was poured into a mug.

Appearance: A two finger brownish white head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is an amber brown color with little clarity or vision of bubbles seen coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Bready, caramel, chocolate, yeasty, banana, clove, earthy, and grassy hops.

Taste: Liquid bread baby. Just like most European doppelbocks. All aromas are blended together with a little bitterness in there too.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, chewy, medium carbonation, and a bit smooth. Like eating a loaf of delicious bread.

Overall: Weihenstephaner can do no wrong. This beer is a continuation of their world class beers.
