This is a very good Doppelbock. I'm usually not a huge fan of the style, but I figured we're coming up on bock season, so it's as good a time as any to get a few more under my belt (and you never know when your tastes will change). I like Weihenstephaner quite a bit, so this was definitely among my top picks to try.

The beer pours to a dark nutty brown color with amber hues. It may be very dark, but when held to the light, it displays a great clarity. An active carbonation maintains a nice crisp tan head. Hardly leaves a single sud of lace on the glass.

The smell is kind of a weak point. The only aroma I can pick up are the vegetal aspects of lager yeast that I often don't enjoy. Stewed carrots and peas, creamed corn. Ick.

The taste, on the other hand, is very good, and it makes up for the unpleasant nose. It has a very nice depth to the malt character without being too rich and "muddy." Just a gentle sweetness, almost even a little more on the dry side of the scale. Fairly chocolatey with some caramel and toffee. Light usage of German noble hops provide a nice backing. The alcohol is fairly well concealed, but it does add to the flavor profile a bit. The vegetal flavors are next to nonexistent on the palate, thankfully.

The body is medium. Very crisp. The flavors wash away quite clean as well, leaving only a gentle lingering of the spicy hops and chocolate. Quite an enjoyable drink, aside from the unfortunate nose.

The bottle is so us usual and beautiful, I had to try it. Poured from a bottle into a Pilsner, at a temperature between the fridge and room temp. Color is a crystal clear strawberry red with the slightest brown tinge when held up to intense light. Thin, tan head, nice lacing. Aroma is yeasty, with roasted malt and caramel sweetness, with mild floral hops. Flavor is again yeasty, roasted malt, toffee sweetness, with a slightly piney finish. Mouthfeel is medium thin, and a bit foamy. This is a style that I do not understand (doppelbock), so I am rating it just as an enjoyable brew and experience. On that basis, I will say it is a very good to outstanding lager, well worth sampling. And this one has a bear, not a goat on the label.

Appearance - Dark chestnut brown with red and orange hues; translucent. Two finger beige head when poured; head died down fairly quickly leaving an uneven coating of foam on the surface of the beer and a little lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell - Malty, slightly sweet, some chocolate with a slight smoke quality. Made me want to drink the beer.

Taste - Smooth taste. Starts off malty, progresses on to be sweet with rich flavors of chocolate and coffee then finishes with a mildly bitter finish. Full of flavor. I found it delicious.

Mouthful - Medium towards heavy body; chewy. Lots of very light carbonation with tiny bubbles. Velvety feel with an ever so slightly dry finish.

Overall - An absolutely delicious beer that I would love to drink again. Due to being dark and on the heavy-side, I would see this a more of a winter beer than a warm weather beer. Almost a desert quality. I will be purchasing this beer again for sure! A great value for the money; I believe I spent less than $4 for the bottle.
