Pours a very dark brown with reddish highlights. Thin tan head. Smell is of dried fruit. Taste is richly of malt flavor, caramel. Not much roasted malt flavor which is surprising for the dark black color. A gentle earthy bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is decent, though a bit watery for a Doppelbock and such a high ABV beer. Carbonation levels are nice and low though. Easy drinking beer, not the best Doppelbock I have had, but an excellent pick nonetheless.

I had a Salvator and loved it so I wanted to try more of the style.
A - Nice brown color almost chestnut with hints of red. Very clear for a Weihenstephaner. Fine off-white head that seemed to stay.
S - Full of malt and caramel notes like Salvator but maybe a little more almost chocolate hints. Lighter alcohol and lager tones.
T - A full flavored brew of malt, caramel, and lager flavor. No real hops to this beer just the malty flavors come through. The characteristic lager flavor is also present but isn't as predominant since it is mostly masked by the full malt assault. Almost no bitterness but it isn't cloying and definitely on the sweet sided making it a good desert beer or as the monks used it, liquid bread!
M - Medium mouth-feel but it should be heavier with the malt bill but the lager yeast really smooths it out. The substantial body and sweetness make this beer not something I could drink more than a couple of but would enjoy it up until then. Moderate carbonation.
Overall, a very good beer if you want a sweet beer that has an amazing lineage. Similar to Salvator but a little sweeter and with less of the "lager" flavor. It's definitely a great beer but I probably wouldn't pick it over Salvator just because of the price difference. I would recommend this to anyone as their first double bock or as a person trying to branch out from more "American" beers.
