Appearance : This beer pours a burnt orange/iced tea color with about 60% opacity. The off-white head, poured at 2 fingers, is creamy and tightly knit and rests at 1 finger tall. Very frothy.

Smell : Dark black licorice and anise candy notes come out immediately. Molasses, horehound, roasted plums, and peated scotch all waft up. It's a very earthy, dirty aroma, but its only a testament to the character of the beer. Bouquet is medium strength.

Taste : Weihenstephaner never ever fails to amaze me. My mouth is in awe from the overwhelming charred and roasted malts, dark licorice, horehound, and a creamy molasses flavor that sticks to the palate like honey and then gradually fades with a punch of sharp yet so appropriately placed hop. Hints of chicory swarm around. Some fig. Flavors of horehound and molasses remain painted in the throat.

Mouthfeel : Uncommonly creamy, dense, sticky, tarry, yet carbonated enough as to not get stuck in your throat. The carbonation is prickly and appropriate. It feels great.

Overall : Weihenstephaner is in my opinion the absolute best brewer on planet earth. I haven't had a beer from them that I have disliked, only liked some more than others. This is right up there as a world class beer. Smiling from ear to ear. Absolutely love.

I had this in a pilsener.
The appearance was a nice looking dark brown color with a fairly thick white to off white foamy head that dissipated within less than two minutes. Rich thick foamy lacing appeared around the sides of the glass.
The smell had a huge sweet banana with loads of dark and milk chocolate invading and providing a nice pizazz to it.
The taste was sweet through the banana - combined with the dark and milk chocolate.
The mouthfeel coated my tongue rich and thick sitting about a medium on the body with a big awesome settling smoothness rolling over my tongue.
Overall, doppelbock - yes, awesome to me - priceless. So worth my money.

Nice, rich, malty dopplebock. Deep malty / molasses nose...rich, deep, sweet taste that stays with you long after the swig. A superb beer to sip on a cold winter or spring evening...a big girl and a real treat

Lots of malt and sour cherry, hints of coffee on the nose, not a lot of body or head but that's to be expected. Pretty good overall, but the maltiness limits me personally to one bottle at a time.

Pours a dark brown, root beer color with a very light brown head that disappears quickly. Very faint nose but dark malt notes predominate. The taste is amazing, perfectly malty with nutmegy and brown sugar notes. One of the tastiest and most balanced hyper-malty beers I've had. Mouthfeel is middle to heavy weight with a slight amount of "chew". Wonderful!

L: Poured into a tulip glass. Very dark, opaque, color. Nice thick tan/cream colored head to it. Very soft and delicate looking head as well. Very creamy and frothy. Plenty of lace to it as well. Good carbonation action as well and lace lasted almost the entirety of the drink.

S: Smells heavy of raisin with a hint of maple and brown sugar. Good malt scent as well mixed with a bit of vanilla and pecan.

T: This got a as close to a five to me as possible without getting one. Amazing flavor. Absolutely amazing. If you drink this at the optimal cellar temperature the complex explosion of dark fruit is incredibly enjoyable. Tastes of raisin, fig, brown sugar, and a holiday pecan pie. Settles into a lovely roasted malt and toffee/mocha flavor that lingers. Only thing keeping it from a five is the somewhat bitter alcohol taste that can hang on the palate.

F: Thick, heavy, and chewy. This boy has a kick to it also. You can feel the 7.4 for sure. Not exactly a sessionable beer given the feel.

O: What a beer. Tremendous flavors and mixture of all the layers of complexity. That is what I personally love about the style. It's not necessarily the flavors themselves but how they blend. The sweet, to bold, to bitter, progression of the drink is amazingly executed. This one is certainly going in my top 5 beers I've tasted. It's a heavy drinking beer but damn if it isn't enjoyable all the way through.
