Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station as part of a special Weihenstephaner commemorative World Cup 2014 glass giveaway. Apparently the "world's oldest brewery" made some unique glasses to commemorate the German national team's appearance (and victory) in the final. Poured into said commemorative glass, tall and flared like a weizen glass, but near the bottom, there is a soccer ball embellishment so that the glass grows directly out of the ball to the top and bottom.
Appearance - Pours a ruddy, cloudy brown that is completely opaque from the unfiltered aspect and has a slightly reddish tint to it. Atop the body sits a two finger head of creamy off white--just the faintest brown twinge to the hue. Retention is moderate, with the head slowly receding to a healthy film across the top of the body, but not much in the way of lacing. Just some faint lines intermittently along the sides of the glass.
Smell - A wonderful concoction of the spiciness you expect from a hefeweizen with lots of clove, and a slightly more subtle complement of banana and even spice cake. The dark malts seem to add mostly color, but also tone down the brightness that explodes out of the glass on their standard hefeweizen. There is a faint malty sweetness underlying the whole thing, which perhaps also contributes to the lack of brightness. But make no mistake, I don't say that as a negative--just different (but typical for the style).
Taste - Picking up right where the aroma left off, with a heavy does of spice led by clove and just a hint of banana, and bringing to mind things like snicker doodle cookies and spice cake, but not as sweet. The grain comes through with a nice bit of toasting that calls to mind toasted whole grain bread, but the yeast is the predominant flavor component here.
Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied and moderate carbonation, with a creamy feel on the tongue.
Overall, just a fantastic beer. Weihenstephaner makes the best hefeweizen in the world, and they certainly can throw their hat into the ring on dunkelweizen as well--if you like clove and spice and everything nice. I also must say that the flavor profiles come through a lot more aggressively on tap than when I've had this out of the bottle. Not sure if that's due to a freshness issue and the likelihood that a keg will be fresher than a bottle, but this is by far the most I've ever enjoyed this beer.

bottle poured into wheat beer glass
A - pours up a dark amber maybe the same color as an apricot, slightly cloudy at first, eventually clearing, with excellent lacing at good lacing.
S - spicy sweet nose with a definite banana aroma.
T - very crisp tasting with the usual banana and clove notes. However, where some beers are a bit too much in your face with the banana stuff this beer has subdued them somehow or another. The finish is satisfyingly sweet, never becoming cloying.
M - very clean with virtually no aftertaste
O - no ones seems to do weizen styles better than the Germans. While the USAs best offering are often hop forward, Weihenstephaner always seems to brew beer that is complex and interesting without going to extremes. This one is a definite yes as Daniel Bryan would say.

Poured from a bottle into a Weizen glass.
A - Pours a murky, toffee-brown with a fluffy three-finger eggshell colored head with good retention. Stripes of spider-web like lacing.
S - Medium strength aroma of banana, pear, clove, and fresh baked wheat bread. Smells inviting.
T - Taste matches the nose, but with additional note of fine ground white pepper. The darker malts reduce some of the clove flavor of the normal Hefe, but bring more balance in return. Fruity. Really, really tasty. Nicely complex and rich flavor.
M - Light bodied, with prickly carbonation. A delightful creaminess makes this feel thick and smooth. Finishes crisp and clean.
O - Fantastic. Best example of the style I have had and a definitely rebuy. Well crafted.

1 pint, 0.9oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pours a rich brown with ruby undertones with a tall cream colored head that has good retention and some lacing.
Smell is of sweet roasted malt, picking up some fruit like banana from the yeast, as well as clove and faint hops.
Taste is similar to the smell, sweet malt up front, with banana and clove in the finish with slight spiciness present throughout. Mouthfeel is highly carbonated and soft, some creaminess as well.
Overall, one of the best Dunkels out there and is always good to have some on hand.
