Single bottle (no date that I could interpret) poured into a Hefeweizen glass. Took quite awhile to pour - huge thick large bubble very light tan head that eventually died down to 1/4" thick foam that stayed the whole way down the glass. Orange-brown (I'm going to call it Tupelo Honey color) translucent color, nice and cloudy like a wheat beer should be with bubbles moving up through the beer slowly.

Note that towards the end I swirled up the sediment and made sure to pour this in.

The smell was strong of banana and cloves - a hint more cloves.

Taste - Apples, something spicy, wheat, yeast up front and if you wait a bit, you get more of a lingering apple and wheat beer flavor left over in the mouth. When the beer is still cold these flavors are watered down a bit and not as noticeable. It reminds me more of Aventinus by Schneider and Sohn than it does of a dark Hefe, but not as strong. Not that I'm complaining mind you - it's just stronger in flavors than a typical Hefe.

Mouthfeel - quite soft on the palate. I'd hesitate to call it chewy, but its thick and soft. Just the barest hint of carbonation on the tongue.

Drinkability - Despite the recommended food tastings I had it with a potato/carrot/onion/parsnip/cream soup (Pottage) and I thought it went really well with it. Quite nice and a good beer to savor over the course of a meal and later on.

1 pint, 0.9oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pours a rich brown with ruby undertones with a tall cream colored head that has good retention and some lacing.

Smell is of sweet roasted malt, picking up some fruit like banana from the yeast, as well as clove and faint hops.

Taste is similar to the smell, sweet malt up front, with banana and clove in the finish with slight spiciness present throughout. Mouthfeel is highly carbonated and soft, some creaminess as well.

Overall, one of the best Dunkels out there and is always good to have some on hand.

A: 4.25 Pours a hazy, reddish-brown with a large off-white head.

S: 3.75 The aroma is mostly bread, esters, yeast, and malt with some light hops in the background. There’s a little bit caramel with the malt, but it’s very faint.

T: 4 Slightly sweet at first with a good amount of fruity, spicy esters following. The malt and hop levels are very nice, but not adding anything particularly interesting. This dark version is actually quite similar to the original.

M: 4.25 The body is pretty light and quite refreshing for a “dark” beer. Carbonation is very nice and enhances the fairly muted flavors.

O: 4 This beer is very nice, however it is not particularly interesting. As mentioned above, it’s very similar to the original version but there’s a little less going on. I was hoping for a bit more roasted malt to come through on the nose and palate, but it’s still very good and easy to drink.
