Notes / Commercial Description:
Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Poured pint bottle into weizen glass. Dark weiss/whit amber color.

Nose is unremarkable, malty.

Taste is light roasty malt, classic citrus, and slight banana.

Mouth is foamy, which is fun I guess.

Not a darker dunkel, closer to weizenbock .Doesn't knock my socks off, but still enjoyable.

I agree, in principle, with most of the ratings and reviews. This Dunkel probably deserves its #1 score.
However, I must have gotten a bottle that lost its freshness. Hence, my below average rating.

MJ's 1999 "Guide" gave this Dunkel 2.5 of 4 stars and said it is "permanently cloudy and has distinct banana with malty suggestions of maple syrup."

Beautiful deep mahogany brown color with some light haziness. There's a half inch of very dense beige head resting on top. Aroma is of sweet dark bready wheat and light banana notes. The taste is sweet dark bready wheat very reminiscent of bread. The mouth is creamy and very smooth.

Very nice Dunkelweizen with good malty, yeasty flavours, cloves, bread, and some cereal. I found it quite light for a dunkel, however, and it has a bit of a watery taste to it which is why I can't give it higher ratings. It's still very enjoyable, but too light bodied and mellow for my tastes.

L: Poured into a Weihenstephan Hefe glass. Originally pours billowing, fluffy clouds of head that settle into a thick silky layer, about 1 finger thick. Leaves tons of lace. Color is dark copper and cloudy
S: Tons of esters, clove, banana, and very lightly toasty malt, smells like fresh dough. Very sweet and inviting.
T: Very complex, yet incredibly balanced. Peppery notes, banana ester, sweet grain. Light sweet toast. Finishes with a slightly dry crispness at the end.
F: Ungodly smoothness. Very silky mouthfeel, full, yet never overbearing. Whispy and not dense, like whipped cream.
O: Classic, world class beer. Will always be a favorite.

On tap in Daytona Beach FL.

Pours with a hazy copper body topped by a creamy off-white head that leaves sticky patterned lacing.

Fruity, spicy and lightly bready Way more balanced (think of the load of banana and clove notes in most competitors) and more complex than perhaps any other beer of this style in my experience. Body is a bit too thin.

Overall: world-class version

Pours a light-brown with orange tint and massive billowing head that leaves lacing. Nose is esters, yeast, some cinnamon and a bit of malt. Not quite as pronounced as the regular hefe. Flavor is crisp, a bit malty compared to the regular, a bit of anise and clove, and a slightly acidic note that keeps it very refreshing. Mouthfeel is lighter that some dunkels, but matches style and crisp nature. Overall, a classic that is almost as good as the regular, but nice for change.

Look: Ample white creamy head that will be there to stay for a long time. Very lively with a lot of bubbling.
Smell: Sweet maltiness, a lot of dark fruit such as prune
Taste: As they say, hint of very ripen banana, but also that of dark fruit. wheaty. Not much of roasted malt. Even though not too high in alcohol, alcoholic taste is there.
Feel: medium/full body. A lot of malty wheat after taste that persists for quite a while.

An excellent brew coming from an excellent brewery. Would recommend it to everybody and have it again.

Hazy, dark copper. Greenish around the edges. Amazing, blood orange colour when held to the light. Some carbonation. Three fingers of foamy white head has staying power. Yeast poured into the glass forms a film one centimetre below the head.

Rich aroma of banana, cloves, and yeast.

Can taste the malt. Then the traditional wheat beer flavours arrive. Toffee banana bread.

Light to medium body. A little fizz on the tongue. Super smooth. A hint of sweetness. Dry.

Another fantastic beer from Weihenstephaner. Gotta go to Freising.

I don't have anything to add to their description. Another ideal example of a Germany style beer done by Weihenstephaner. All four elements are exactly what you are hoping for from this style.

Cloudy amber-brown color with a massive tan-tinted head. Smells of banana, bubble gum and maybe a little clove. Maybe there's a hint more bready malt in the nose than a plain hefeweizen, but the yeast is what stands out. Soft, lush, fairly full-bodied mouthfeel. The malt is more present in the taste than in the aroma, muting the banana flavor somewhat. Don't know that I'll reach for the dunkel all that often, but it's a nice change of pace.

Poured to a Weihenstephaner glass.

A: The head is two finger thick with a white coloration plus a nice coppery body.
S: The aroma has an almost perfect bready tone with a bit of toffee on top. I've created the image of a cake in my head.
T: This Dunkel had a perfectly hoppy profile with an amazing touch of toffee and clove. Weihenstephaner won me here.
M: They won again. Mouthfeel wise, this is just perfect for a dunkel. The bitterness and the carbonation are exactly au point.
O: Overall? This is the best Dunkel I've ever had. Simple.

Pours a hazy amber color, with a large foamy head that dissipates quickly. Quite a bit of visible carbonation, and a lot of lacing. This is a wild-looking beer.

The smell is conventional for a hefe. A lot of sweet wheat, bananas, almonds, and yeast.

Taste is akin to the smell, and generally fantastic. The sweetness of the wheat, combined with the banana flavor adds up to a candyesque, or caramel-type flavor. Overall, satisfyingly sweet - but just enough of tartness to make it nuanced and interesting. Mouthfeel is moderate-light, and carbonation is moderate. The body has a delightfully creamy texture.

This is most excellent!

Poured from a 0.5 L bottle into a Weihenstephaner wheat beer glass. The bottled on code is 2365.

Look -- Pours a hazy deep amber with three fingers of creamy off-white head that leaves nice lacing on the glass.

Smell -- Classic hefeweizen clove, banana, yeast, and wheat. There are hints of apricot in there and a malty toastedness beneath it all. It's vaguely reminiscent of banana bread if you left out the cinnamon.

Taste -- Like the nose except the toasted character is more prominent and a refreshing tartness comes through.

Feel -- The carbonation and body give it a hefty and luxurious mouthfeel. However, the body isn't so heavy that it distracts and loses it's ability to feel refreshing. It has all the body that an unfiltered wheat beer should have.

Overall -- A delicious dunkelweizen. It is much like Weihenstephaner's normal hefeweissbier but the strength of the esters is subdued slightly by the light toasted character to be found in this beer. I prefer to have the esters pop more but it's still a fine beer.

I think I'm partial to this type of beer. I also like the texture of unfiltered beers, but I'm not sure if this one is. It smells like a spring garden. It looks like smooth liquid caramel. The lacing is quick and weak. If you pour it fast, it makes a huge fluffy head that doesn't linger. It tastes light and easy with a subtle sweet aftertaste. I'm delighted with it. The bottle says that it was "brewed under the purity law of 1516." Hmmm. Sounds interesting.

This was given to me as a X-mas present this past year. I was surprised to see that I hadn't previously reviewed/rated it.

The beer pours a somewhat hazy, tannish orange amber color with excellent head retention and considerably lacing. The nose is pretty much everything you'd want in a dunkel weizen, as I pick up clove, light banana, nutmeg, a hint of burnt toast and dark chocolate, along with some light licorice. The flavor profile replicates the nose for the most part, although the beer seemed to be dominated by the clove, spice and burnt toast characteristics. There was some noticeable initial sweetness in the beer as well, that was nicely countered by the spice and burnt toast flavor. Mouthfeel was fairly light, though for such a low abv. beer, there certainly was no lack of flavor intensity. Alcohol was completely unnoticeable, and so drinkability was very good.

While I prefer the regular hefeweizen to this version, nevertheless, this was a very enjoyable, easy to appreciate beer from Weihenstephaner. Of course that's no surprise, as pretty much everything I've had from this reputable brewery has been excellent.

Dark amber, copper color with huge foamy head that never lets up. I actually have to wait several minutes to take a sip.

Smooth, rich yeasty, wheat aroma. Fresh, malty, and complex with pepper, clove and coriander spice added.

Flavor follows the nose well with exceptional balanced. Subtle banana undertones. Finishes clean.

Smooth medium body. Tiny, lively bubbles. Fine, grainy texture.

Everything I could expect from a dunkel.

Pours a lightish brown with medium carbonation. Very bready with the banana flavor from the yeast. Hops aren't notable. Not terribly sweet or anything. MMMM liquid banana bread.

From the 1/2 liter bottle, it pours a hazy light brownish amber with a frothy head that stays a while, slowly dissipating. Yeasty, bready, banana-ey smell tickles the nose. A bit of banana hits the tongue, along with the maltiness. Feels just like a wheatbier should! Yum!

A- Pours a orange tinged copper color, that has plenty of haze due to yeast....the head is an off white color, and is creamy soap in texture....it retains quite well too. Carbonation, from what I can see, is mellow and lumbering...the lacing is quite well, with medium sized patches sticking to the side of the glass...overall, a winning look!

S- Traditional spicy notes, primarily coming from such goodness as clove, nutmeg, slight pepper, mild cinnamon, banana fruit and other tropical aromas. There is bread like biscuit noted, and yeasty creaminess too....the finish seems to be long and not bitter at all.

T- Very much of banana fruit, with some blends of various citrus fruit, however it is much more muted, but balances the richness. Spiciness coats the palate with ginger, clove, cinnamon and an underlying peppercorn. Yeasty richness ensues, with nuttiness and perhaps some milk chocolate....it is like dessert (banana/gingerbread)....the finish is clean, yet flavorful and it lingers on the palate.

M/O- Creamy and rich, but not to the extent that I would have expected, but it is very welcome at the same time. Highly sociable beer, and reasonably clean, but there is a lingering Vicks 44 feel to it. Medium-Full bodied and the wheat malt provides a nice backbone to the finish. the alcohol is very nicely hidden....another winner! Please try this at home :)
