My first dunkel, poured in to a tall Hefeweizen glass.

Appearance: Rusty brown with some orange showing through. Almost the same color as the bottle. Nice one and a half finger head that calms down a bit but remains. Little lacing. Strong carbonation from the bottom of the glass.

Smell: Whoa, almost pure malt hits you in the face. Malt sweetness, spice (clove and black pepper), cinnamon, yeast, bubblegum, banana, faint dark fruit. This smells great. I've had and loved their Hefeweizen and it smells exactly like that with more malt and spice.

Taste: It's awesome. Malt and caramel sweetness up front while staying light and peppery. Moves to the back of the tongue where you get the traditional Hefeweizen flavors of yeast, banana, and clove. Refreshing flavor while remaining different from what I've had before.

Mouthfeel: Prickly and dry, just as it should be. Unsurprisingly no identifiable alcohol. Leaves a great finish that makes me want to pick the glass back up every time I put it down.

This is a great beer and a fantastic introduction in to the dunkel style. I'm loving it for the change it brings, but If I had a choice between this and their original Hefeweizen, I'd have to pick the original. Both are worth a definitely shot and amazing, try them and find your favorite.

Arrives a cloudy, rust brown with a small, light tan head. Retention is good though only as a film. No lace.
Smell is all malt and spices (cloves, cinnamon & pepper) with some yeast and mustiness.
Taste is malt, spices, yeast and I swear a very faint apple note though maybe it was just a wishful thinking. Good balance.
Slightly warming, very light effervescence. Medium bodied. Slightly watery at the start but filling in nicely midway through the finish. Good stuff, Maynard.

Poured from a 500 mL bottle into a Weihenstephaner chalice.

In my chalice this dunkelweizen pours a translucent walnut brown color with a reddish tint. A tan head has a nice original size and density before gently fading.

The aroma is surprisingly strong on the yeast. Clove, some banana, and a bit of dark fruit. Maybe some caramel in the background.

Although I was expecting a burst of robust flavor from each sip, I was somewhat disappointed in the blandness of the Hefeweissbier Dunkel. The requisite banana and clove notes are there, as they are in the regular Hefe, but they are almost muted by what should be the dunkel part. The only thing is, there is not much in terms of caramel, toasted malts, or dark fruits to be found.

The carbonation is vivacious as I was expecting, with a rather light body. The beer wraps up pretty cleanly with no real aftertaste to speak of.

Overall I have to say this is the weakest Weihenstephaner offering I have had. I have no issue with how it was brewed per se, but the combination of flavors (or lack thereof) make it tough to say I would want to have this again.

A: burnt orange with a nice big heady. Very cloudy.

S: Wheat and clove. Big yeast with freshly baked bread. A touch of banana and the smallest amount of toasted caramel.

T: Huge wheat and bread. yeast. banana ester. its spicy with caramel on the end. big malt characteristic. i almost taste like an applesauce as weird as that sounds.

M: CRISP. Smooth with fantastic carbonation. clean.

O: Its definitely a nice, highly drinkable refreshing beer. But i consider this more of a hefeweissen than a dunkle. I think its good but for me it didnt quite live up to the hype. /85

Appearance: Cloudy; chestnut; huge frothy cream head, long lasting, good lacing

Aroma: Strong banana notes up front; faint cloves and hops behind banana

Taste: Light banana flavors on start, followed by a nice juicy, smooth profile; hops come through in the mid and finish; finishes with banana notes on the palate; well-balanced

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores
