A noble composition of very traditional aroma hops from the world’s biggest connected hops growing area with a blend of the sorts “Tradition” and the original local cultivars “Hersbrucker” and “Hallertauer Mittelfrüh”. Local cultivars are hops in their most original and natural way, selected out of wild growing sorts over the last centuries. They are highly sought after for their low bitter value yet very distinguished, elegant and flavorful aroma.

Sampled from a 0.5l bottle, a gift from my friend Iain from Weihenstephan.... Consumed in Maastricht on 28SEP16... Best by date of 30SEP16....

Poured into a small Teku, it was medium golden and a bit muted and hazy. Had a voluminous light tan head; billowed up at least 2" easily, with a very slow ebb. Had plentiful, fine, aggressive carbo, and excellent lacing. Had sort of a doughy nose, with a bit of caramel and light citrus. Body was a little under medium, and it had a touch of prickle.

Taste started like the nose - doughy, biscuity and with subtle caramel. Had some mild fruit action, with some green apple and a hint of grapefruit, and a smidge of light floral hopping at the end. A middle of the road offering, at best. Prosit!

tasted the WPA directly at the source at Weihenstephan Hill, from tap at the Versuchsbrauerei TUM. The 2016 edition: Pilsner, Münchner II, Cara Hell, Hops: Hersbrucker and Hallertauer. 6.1 % ABV, 36 IBU. Pours in at a dark amber rather copper colour, nice fluffy head. Smells like pine, some fruity Esters, not that much citrucy, more like strawberry, more like ripe fruits and sweet malts..... real nice in my opinion. First sip is fruity, very smooth, finish is not that bitter at all.... so it is easy to drink. So that'S what ist like: A very fruity, hoppy PA with some german style malts and easy to drink caracter. Really good. You could easily drink 2 or 3 "halbe" of this beer at the beer garden .... Prost!

Poured a nice clear amber with a two finger white head that stuck around. It looked quite pleasant. Scents of fruity esters, including banana, some citrus, pineapple and sweet malt. A very good nose, a nice combination of pale ale and German. Flavor followed mostly after the nose. Citrus, slight grapefruit rind, moderate hop bitterness, some fruity flavors, sweet pale malt, some slight dry wheat cracker in the background. Very good combination of flavors, very refreshing and surprisingly complex. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a nice crisp feel. Very easy to drink on a hot day. Overall this is an excellent fusion of a pale ale and a German style ale. It has qualities from both styles and combines them in a very pleasant way. Highly recommended.

Served on-draught at a bar in SoCal. Served into a weissbier glass. Expectations are high given the brewery. Reviewed from notes taken on Saturday. I thought it odd that one of the most traditional German breweries in the world brewed a pale ale.

A: Pours a 1.5 finger head of beige colour and soft complexion. Nice thickness and creaminess. Good (4-5 minute) retention. No lacing or "legs" here. Colour is a nontransparent copper. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Glowing. Spot-on for the style. Looking good so far.

Sm: Pleasant balanced hop profile with dominant floral character. A bit oily and nectary. Grassy. Orange and grapefruit fruit esters. Pale malts. The malty end is evocative and inviting, complementing the hop selection well. No alcohol is detectable. Fresh clove. Banana. A balanced aroma of moderate strength.

T: Pale malts, banana, clove, fruit esters (grapefruit and orange). The hops suit the malts well; it's a good marriage thereof. Well balanced. Floral hop character is dominant. Some caramalt gives it a bit more body. Clean and refreshing. Simple but enjoyable. Some subtlety is at play here.

Mf: Clean, smooth, and wet. Great carbonation. Good thickness and body. A bit oily. Suits the flavour profile well. Light presence on the palate. Refreshing.

Dr: Drinkable and enjoyable. Another solid brew from Weihenstephaner. It's not a great American pale, but it's an interesting balanced approach to the style. Its simplicity holds it back. A nice summer beer, but not quite on par with the high bar set by their other offerings. I'd get it at German prices, but it's not memorable enough to nab on draught again. Glad I tried it.
