750 ml. bottle, corked and caged, poured into a New Belgium globe.

A: I was a bit worried at first about the carbonation of this beer from what I had heard about about it. Pours a hazy golden hue with a finger of frothy white head. Everything looks fine to me. Retention is good, and sticky lace coats the glass.

S: Rhubarb is definitely present up front, with notes of honey, some floral undertones and cracker.

T: An intense blast of tart rhubarb right off the bat, but well balanced by trademark character of this beer. Honey and biscuity notes are there, along with some other fruity notes brought on by the yeast. Finish is tart, but not mouth-puckering sour.

M: I'm really liking the mouthfeel in this stage. Carbonation is prickly, and gives the beer some lively character. Full bodied, yet very quenching.

O: This beer is amazing! I was expecting subtle rhubarb notes, yet this has so much more. Joe Pond nailed it with this beer! I was hoping to see this beer a bit earlier in the year, but it was definitely worth the wait. Very well-done, and on my top picks list for 2012.

2013 Vintage

Appearance: Pours with a thick bubbly head of about three fingers. The color is darker orange/straw. Very cloudy look to the body of the beer. Average active carbonation while drinking.

Smell: Spicy yeast with plenty of grass and straw aromas jump out first. Mild fruity hops with some semi-sweet rhubarb. Rhubarb not as potent as I expected it to be. Lingering lemon/lime sting rounds this brew out. Nothing overly complex but very pleasant.

Taste: Tart rhubarb and grassy earthy yeast hit first. Creamy, buttery body transitions nicely off the tartness of the front. Mild fruity, medium dry hop tones pop up toward the end of this brew and continue to dry out into the finish. Aftertaste is lingering bitterness with dry yeast tones.

Mouthfeel: Pretty much what you'd expect out of a belgian style ale. Heavy on the dryness, carbonation is prevalent but does not distract away from everything going on here. No sense of the 10% abv.

Overall: A well crafted ale. Quite a bit going on here and all the flavors and aromas play along well together. The rhubarb was pretty subdued on the aroma but was able to shine through with a pleasant tartness. Slow sipper, a really great brew.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a dark golden hue (slightly murky) with high carbonation producing a 2-3 inch bubbly white head. Excellent retention. Good amount of lasting lacing too.
S: Fresh and spicy Belgian yeast, fruity esters, toasted grains, and a whiff of honey and rhubarb.
T: Wow...the aroma got turned on its head...rhubarb and honey right up front here. Fruity esters and Belgian yeast. Hint of toasted grains and malt. Surprisingly good.
M: Smooth, sweet, and with a good amount of carbonation to prickle the palate. Surprisingly light body given the hefty ABV.
D: This is one damn good beer! Just about as drinkable as a 10% ABV brew can get. The rhubarb adds a very pleasant layer of complexity and melds well with the rest of the notes. One would think this would hardly be noticeable, but it makes its presence known.

First batch of this, so note quite two years old. Served in a snifter in the West Lakeview backyard. Think this was also from Josh.

A - Big white foam settles to a thick collar, wispy cap, and splotchy lacework. Hazed orange-yellow body.

S - The taste is somewhat unexciting, and I get the sense this didn't age very gracefully. The spicy yeast found in the base beer seems to have dissipated, revealing more honey and malt sweetness and little else. There's a mildly estery floral hand lotion vibe and negligible rhubarb character at this stage.

T - The taste is significantly more in line with my expectations, and the beer benefits from it. Rhubarb shows up, lending some tartness and vegetal character late. Honey and malt are still fairly present and Belgian characteristics are quite restrained, but there's better balance of flavor here.

M - Smooth, medium-full body, with well-hidden alcohol and pleasant moderate carbonation. Sufficient heft for the ABV, but enough spritz to prevent a heavy or cloying vibe.

D - I probably put off opening this for far too long, as the rhubarb character seems to have petered out. Not bad, but not particularly exciting or enjoyable either. I appreciate the well-hidden alcohol. I'd like to try a really fresh bottle to see how much it differs.
