Pours a mahogany color with an off-white head. Smells like concord grape juice. Very sweet and sugary. Tons of grape fruitiness, some toasted malt, and a little bit of caramel. The flavor is, somehow, even more grapey. A touch of cough syrup, bready malt, and a hint of caramel. Light fig note to it as well. Couldn't power through this one.

On-tap @ Library Alehouse. Served in a narrow pint glass.

Hazy rufous body with a beige stand of cream around the lip. Excellent lacing, faint legs, good retention.

Rye, evergreen, and mulch in the nose. Quite restrained.

The description of a "California" alt prepares you for an increase in bitterness compared even to a Sticke, and the palate entry certainly delivers. Moderate but quite lasting peppery hop notes arrive first, though they have a leafy/grassy side as well - though I'd be surprised if only noble hops were used. Malt bill is complex and full suggesting crystal, caramel, and chocolate along with a hint of rye again. Bready, spicy, biscuity, faintly toasty finish is reluctant to let go. Very nice.

A bit slick for the style, makes me wonder if it was brewed as an ale rather than a lager? Well carbonated, and not-quite-medium-bodied.

Creative take on an old-world style not frequently seen stateside. Still, the beer doesn't veer so far afield as to ignore the stylistic basics. Well rounded, cleanly bitter, quite malty, and substantial yet enlivening.

On tap for the 1st Anniversary Party.
Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours a light reddish brown with a 1/2inch off-white head leaving trace lace.

N: Sweet malts and dark fruits (raisins).

T: Complex grainy malt, raisins, slight roast and toast, caramel, slight smoke, and faint hop.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Mildy dry with a sweetness from the malt. Smoothly balanced.

O: Interesting and would like to give this a try again.

Enjoyed at Clusterfork #7 in a snifter. Growler shared by tieman.

A: Dark brown with a reddish hue and a big off-white crown of foam.

S: The nose has a lot of bread and biscuit, with a touch of sulfur. Caramel is faint. Clean.

T: The flavor mirrors the nose, with ample bread and caramel. Bitterness is at a lower medium body. The finish is clean with a nice biscuit character.

M: Lower medium body with upper moderate carbonation.

Overall: A well executed Alt from a new brewery. Definitely. recommended.

On tap at Enegren Brewing Company in Moorpark, CA.

Pours a murky dark brown with no head. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt and some fruity aromas. Taste is of the malt and slightly fruity flavors. There is a mild bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a light carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel and medium body. Overall, this is a good alt but it tastes better than it smells.

First and foremost, the brewers called this beer a "California Alt" did my best to follow what the brewers said this beer is, which is to the German Ale, Altbier style, with their own twist.
Also, for those interested, they also post what went into the beer on their site. In this case:

MALT: German Pilsner, German Munich Dark, CaraMunich III, Chocolate Wheat, Melanoidin Malt

HOPS: Hallertauer & Mt. Hood

VITALS: Starting Gravity: 1.067
Final Gravity: 1.020
ABV: 6.2%
IBU: 29

On to with my review

A: Poured from the growler into a rastal tulip glass, the beer pours a cloudy, ruby, or hazy auburn brown color. About an inch of creamy tan head that settled to a film on top, with a solid ring of bubbles along the edges, with consistent lacing on the glass.

S: Roasted almonds, spices, mild rye (maybe), mild choclate, (wife picked up a spriz of coffee) a lot going on.

T: Roasted malt, nutty caramel malt, spices, touch of mild choclate. Reminds me of a cross between a brown ale, and mild rye beer, but smooth and balanced.

M: Full bodied, medium to low carbonation, and creamy.

O: Very tasty. I had two 5 oz tasters of this while at the brewery today for their grand opening and liked it there, so I took home a growler, but with the larger pour, and served in a tulip glass, the beer really opened up, and was fantastic.

This one was very confusing at first. It took a few sips to adjust to the flavor. It appears a very nice dark amber brown. Can't really see through it.

The smell wasn't that great to me. It confused me a bit with the hops, and to me turned out a bit like medicine. As I tasted more, the caramel and grain notes came through.

The taste was initially different from other altbiers, but again this is a Cali so I expect some hops. It's actually a nicely balanced. The more sips I take the more I understand the flavor. I may be just new to Cali altbiers. Mouthfeel is pretty good, a touch of stickiness which is nice and helps the caramel and grains flavor round out.

Overall, it was interesting and worth trying.
