Brewed to coincide with Germany's famous fall celebration, our Casco Bay Oktoberfest is a truly authentic UR-MARZEN. We use a special Munich lager yeast, liberal doses of Munich and caramel malts and noble hops to produce this smooth, balanced and imminently drinkable beer in the great German tradition. PROST!

A: pours a reddish hued copper color with a bubbly cream colored one finger head. Nice retention on the sides of the glass and film on top. Ridiculously nice spider web lacing.
S: Malty and fruity notes dominate the nose. Sweet caramel malt with ever so slight fruity hop notes.
T/M: Caramel malt with a toasted grain effect to it. Grassy hop action takes on a floral sweetness in the finish. Hop notes take over and have more of the flavor profile towards the finish with the caramel malts dominating off the line. Bitter and dry finish make this O'fest quite refreshing. Slick through the mouth with a crisp carbonation and lightish body.
D: Solid, drinkable O'fest with a good hoppyness. Horray for Casco Bay!

Once more, my utmost thanks to tone77 for his outstanding tradesmanship. He (usually) lives locally and stops by Chez Woody with an armload of bottles & CANs for me which I exchange for a CANlection of CANs. Unfortunately, I have fallen behind, especially as bottles are concerned, leading to the Bottle Backlog. I am happy to be winnowing it down to something approaching manageability.
From the bottle: "An Oktoberfest Style Ale". Huh? We'll see.
I Pop!ped the cap & began a gentle pour, resulting in a finger of dense, light-tan head with good retention. Color was Coppery-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was biscuity, bready, very pleasantly malty. It actually smelled more like dough than bread. I miss being in and around a working bakery. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was slightly grassy, but overlain by a doughy, bready maltiness. This was much more to my liking after the previous malty-sweet Oktoberfest. I could drink something like this all day during Oktoberfest, while its sweeter counterpart(s) would be a one-and-done. The finish was semi-dry, much closer to dry than sweet and as such, it was a welcome segue from the last one. I am running through several Oktoberfests tonight and this would be 1 of 2, but stay tuned.

Casco Bay Oktoberfest
12 oz. brown glass bottle, coded "1185P"
$1.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
It's not a bad Oktoberfest by any means, but neither is it one that will turn your head. The malt just doesn't have enough depth of character to it; and it appears almost English or American rather than German - although there is what I'd call a Vienna malt character to it. It's fruity like an ale, which is a little confusing, and perhaps distracting. Perhaps this is a hybrid Märzen which utilizes ale yeast rather than lager yeast as it's supposed to? It's well-balanced though, and pretty drinkable. There are some pleasant floral and spicy/grassy/leafy hops to it, and the combination of medium and dark caramel malts combine well and linger nicely in the drying finish.

Pours brown amber, has a medium off white head. Aroma on the pour is grains fruity and some grass, caramel malt and toasted grains come in as it warms up. Taste is grains, with some mild toasted barley and caramel malt flavors. A medium body with moderate carbonation on the palate. Finis is light toasted grains, some grass and fruity notes with a nice caramel malt ending, lightly hopped notes. Overall not the best in its class, an ok brew.

A nice take on the style. Definitely falls more in line with the toasted malt/toasted grain category of the style rather than the herbal tea sweetness. The Noble Hop profile cuts through the munich malt caramel sweetness. Crisp and refreshing. This offering will continue to make appearances in my Oktoberfest fall rotation.
Prost!

A: Pours a crystal clear medium copper in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and some faint amber highlights. The beer has a half finger tall sudsy foamy beige head that quickly reduces to a mottled medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Moderate aromas of caramel malts with some light fruit sweetness (apple/pear). Very light notes of spicy/earthy hops.
T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of caramel and bready malts with a light hint of toasted malts. There is a light amount of initial sweetness with some light notes of light fruits (apple/pear) and caramel. Very light notes of spicy and earthy hops which impart a touch of bitterness to the finish of the beer which does not linger.
M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.
O: Overall a pretty decent representation of the style and relatively easy to drink - a touch sweeter than I prefer them but still a nice beer. Would be easy to have a few of these in a session and the alcohol is well hidden.

Nice orange-brown color with a good head that leaves quickly and leaves slight lacing. Malt sweetness aroma. Taste is good with a touch of bitterness and some sweet malts. Sad to say, the finish was slightly metallic. Do not know if there was a issue with the bottling or cap, but is not pleasant and seems that that is all you taste on the finish, metallic

Pours a deep clear amber, bordering on brown. The head is white and dissipates quickly but still manages to leave some lacing. The aroma is malty sweet, dark fruit dominating. The taste has a nice fruity sweetness to it with a nice hint of earthy hops and a little caramel on the finish. The body has a nice weight and there is just a hint of carbonation on the finish.

Ah, my first Oktoberfest beer of the season, here on 8/30. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle. Has a bronze color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is malty, slightly sweet. Taste is refreshing, caramel malts, bready. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.
