Notes/Commercial Description:
Our flagship, this Irish-Style Red Ale proudly won a gold medal at the 2000 World Beer Cup. A combination of 5 different malts and 3 hop varietals, carefully blended, results in a perfect balance. Full-flavored and medium-bodied, the Riptide Red provides surprising complexity for such an easy-drinking brew.

From a 12oz bottle. Best Enjoyed Before Nov 2003

Well, it's definitely red...

Deep bright red with small quickly-dissipating white head. Lace evident. The smell is dry. A light sweet smell.

Taste is spicy and dry. Malty with hints of fruit. Nice dry hoppy finish. Light to medium-bodied. Quite tasty.

A very good red ale.

Appearance: Excellent ruby red hue with notes of amber and orange in the light. Slow, heavy carbonation that is moderate in volume.

Smell: Incredible smell. Initial bite of peppermint followed by smoky whispers of tobacco. Licorice, prunes, and cherries make up the mortar.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Smoky rye with a hint of cherry. There's almost a scotch-like character to the flavor in the finish. Very sophisticated and unexpected for an Irish Ale. Mouthfeel is very lager-like with clean carbonation, but it is by no means flat.

Overall Drinkability: Slainté to this one.

Poured on-tap and served in a shaker pint, the beer is a bright, vibrant, amber coloring with a thin, filmy, clingy, white head. Aromas of roast caramel and nut sweetness, with hints of smoke. Flavors are richly sweet and roasty, with caramel and sugary notes. Smooth, light bodied with a tangy sweet aftertaste. Clean, lingering finish, with floral and sugary notes left behind.

poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass, served at slightly above fridge temp.

nice amber with a thin offwhite head. minimal lacing.

aroma; first thing I detect is diacetyl. the caramel corn dominates the nose totally.

mouthfeel: is good.

taste: a mix of pale and toasted malt with exactly the right level of bitterness to balance this beer.

notes: my 2nd Maine beer in an hour. this is a nice ale, well balanced, interesting enough to be distinguishable. would drink again.
