A 16oz pint at the Sugarbowl - dubbed a 'red ale' on the chalkboard.
This beer appears a glassy, dark reddish amber hue, with one rather fat finger of densely foamy, creamy, almost caked beige head, which leaves some nice random seaspray lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.
It smells of weak caramel malt, a slight biscuity breadiness, a mild metallic astringency, and earthy, leafy hops. The taste is a fair bit bigger - biscuity caramel malt right up front, a flat pear and apple fruitiness, more metallic, and somehow cold alcohol, and somewhat musty, earthy hops.
The carbonation is a bit frothy, and tight at the same time, the body medium-light in weight, and not really all that smooth, as that same flinty edge carries through. It finishes off-dry, the wan breadiness kind of winning by acclimation.
A so-so Yankee red ale, the surprising 7 points of ABV generally well restrained, except for that niggly metallic essence. After a few of these, I'm sure that wouldn't even be noticeable, but there's nothing here enticing me to even give that the ol' college try.
