Juicy hop bomb here. So smooth. Somehow better than OTWOA. I hope this becomes part of the permanent rotation.

10 oz. Pour into a snifter at Pizza Paradiso Dupont.

Golden orange color body nearly crystal clear. Deep peach orange with a tan one finger even bubbled head presented. Very fine but plentiful looking lacing while drinking. A real gorgeous color.

Nose has large pine and tropic notes. Very big emphasis on pineapple juice going on this sucker. Large, controlled with minimal sweetness on hop front. Pineapple also comes out quite floral somewhat and green.

First sip brings lots of pine and quick prickly carbonation. Lots of hop oil and fruity character taking a back seat hinted on the nose. Some lemon like finish and a bit hop hot as the alcohol really seems to boost the aromatics. Palate feel is a bit crisp and has lost a bit of its juicy quality hinted on the nose.

Alcohol on this is a bit masked but it seems to get accentuated with the hop profile. Still its a great hop forward brew, and another great IPA for the brau gang.

DC Brau knocked this one out of the park! This a great beer that show cases the mosaic hops; full of citrus, and tropical flavors.

So glad I scored a case of this!

10 oz. bottle poured at Pizzeria Paradisio DuPont Circle in NW D.C. today (2/25/14), unknown kegging date (but suspected recent), poured into a small snifter glass and drank over an hour

A - 3/3 - orange-amber coloration, slight hop haze but generally clear for a DC Brau IPA; initial white frothy head dissipated into a subtle glass lacing after several minutes; moderate alcohol legs; carbonation reagitates on the swirl

S: 8/12 - mild fruit - blueberry, strawberry, watermelon - and slight piney/resiny aroma; little detectable malt character on the nose

T: 16/20 - on the anterior tongue, there's a slight hop bitterness that's quickly overtaken by tropical fruit and berry with some subdued pine and resin flavors; it's sweeter than OTWOA but similar sweetness to ADM - maybe some honey in there and, on then back of the tongue, there's a slight toffee sweetness; finishes moderately dry, which invites subsequent sips; little detectable alcohol

M: 4/5 - full body, mild hop coating the tongue, moderate alcohol fullness

O: 9/10 - overall, this is another winning DIPA from my favorite brewery in the DMV; it's a nice showcase of Mosaic, but, to be honest, I wish that the hop aroma and flavors were more forward/less subdued, and, for that reason, I'm detracting a point on overall; otherwise, it's definitely worth checking out for any DC Brau and/or Mosaic lover

TOTAL - 40/50

As a big fan of OTWOA, I was really excited they canned this. It's basically wings with Mosaic hops, a personal favorite of mine. Cool looking can for what it's worth. Pours a deep golden/orange, smells nice and dank. Hop explosion, great mouthfeel followed by tons of citrus. Tangerine, grapefruit, nice sweet finish. This is a stellar beer and my new favorite from DC Brau. It's a heavy bag at 10%abv but it's actually hidden pretty well. These are gonna be dangerous on a hot day. Really impressive beer overall.

Easily my favorite DC Brau beer. So glad I got to try this while they still had it at the brewery. OTWOA is such a solid brew but this edges it out in my mind...Tons of sweet fruit and really forward hops make for a great combo. If you guys read this please start canning it!!!

Appearance: Pours a hazy deep orange color with hints of red. Big rocky white head with really, really good retention and thick, spotty lacing.

Smell: Crazy amount of fruit flavors. Strawberry, grapefruit, and other deep berry aromas akin to raspberry or blueberry. Maybe some pineapple in there as well. Hints of pine and dankness offer clues to the Mosaic hop's lineage (Simcoe + Nugget). Smells really terrific

Taste: Again, tastes like bitter fruit juice to an extent. Lots of berry flavor with citrusy and tropical hints. Very clean bitterness allows the hop flavor to come in waves across the palate. Finishes dry and fruity with a juicy angle. The bitterness is subdued here for what it is. Slight hints of dankness and pine, but the fruit is the star here.

Feel: Slightly sticky but never cloying. Modest sweetness and hints of caramel sweetness meld very well with the hop flavors. Medium carbonation. Not a palate wrecker. Nice feel for a double IPA. Let's you know that you're drinking a big beer without taxing the palate.

Overall: Add this to the list of outstanding hoppy beers from DC Brau. Toe to toe with OTWOA, just depends which hop profile you prefer (citrus/deep pine) vs. (berry and tropical fruit). I think this works slightly better for my palate. Exceptional DIPA.

Solar Abyss pours a dark amber color with a small lacing head. There was a weak aroma, but it had a nice hop note. The taste was very bold, strong hop flavors, and had a nice bitter pine like flavor. Good full flavors, good overall feel. Overall its a strong "piney" IPA.

Hoppy, blood orange and sweet citrus for a fantastic balance. The nose is lovely and the taste is all Mosaic. Delicious.

On draft at Whole Foods in Alexandria, VA.

Served alongside On The Wings of Armageddon.

The beer appears amber hued with a small, off-white head. Grandiose fresh hop aroma. This is a great showcase for Mosaic hops. Hop forward with a light, sourdough bread backing. Mild bitterness in the back. Big flavor and long lasting aftertaste. So fresh. This was definitely on the same level as OTWOA. Impressive.

Murky orange/amber color. A sweet and almost tangy citrus flavor. Smells great but somehow doesn't linger. A very good DIPA.

Tried this (finally) on tap at whole foods in DC on p street. From my understanding, it's on the wings with mosaic hops in place of falconers.

A beautiful orange hue with golden edges, the brew has a ring of white head and nice lacing on the st bernardus goblet. More transparent than the normal DIPA but very pretty.

The smell and taste both really highlight the earthy, herbal and aggressive hop bill of mosaic hops. I wasn't totally familiar with this varietal before this and it's very well displayed especially in the taste which bursts with flavors ranging from honey sweet, bracingly bitter, tangy fruit, and again an strong herbal twist that is really intriguing. The aroma has a little less of the malt and focuses only on hops, which is fine by me!

The feel is great and just what I like in hoppy dipas: on the one hand bitter, dry and sweet, but with a sudsy frothy feel with a lingering finish. Crisp and easy to drink at such an abv.

Overall another winner from DC Brau. I could drink a lot of this.

Orange body with a hint of cloudiness to it. Foamy head that settles quickly and leaves a thin layer of bubbles. Aroma is big on citrus; orange, grapefruit, a dash of onion. Flavor is very similar, lots of citrus, lots of orange and grapefruit with a hint of a toasty malt bill to balance it out. Mouthfeel is full bodied, creamy, medium carbonation. This is a solid beer that is big on flavor and body. Not sure if this is the best example of the mosaic hop variety, but it's worth a try.

Fresh growler into tasting glass.

OK, the nose is the strongest part of this beer. Absolutely overpowering strawberry and grapefruit. Extremely potent. Some pineapple too.

First sip was surprisingly smooth. I was expecting hops, instead I got a honey, syrupy, smooth mix of citrus and pine. Less strawberry and grapefruit in the taste. Very smooth finish. The hops sink in on the next few sips. The body is a little thicker than I expected it would be.

The honey and sweet make the feel smooth and heavy-bodied and overpower the bitter and hops. Finishes dry. Significant carbonation. Very fresh.

Finally, the distinctive DC Brau pine balance/ dankness that you get in the On the Wings of Armageddon is present here as well.

Solar Abyss may be their best yet. OTWOA is great. Solar Abyss may be better.

Had this on tap (free sample!) at the brewery over the weekend. It seemed like most growlers were being filled with this over the other offerings like The corruption, the citizen and the public.

Pours a reddish orange that was a bit cloudy and hazy. No sediment just not clear. The head was huge and stuck around.

The smell was fruity from the Mosiac but also had a touch of citrus. Not to much on the pine.

The taste for me was completely different than the smell. I didn't get too much on the berry fruits but rather a dank, earthy tone. Not too bitter and bit heavily piney. Refreshing flavor for a DIPA. This was quite good.

Edit: tried this in 2015 out of a can that was days fresh. Rare case where almost everything I got on my initial review I agreed with. This is a very juicy beer overall, and about the only thing I can say about the review that follows is that I didn't get a big amount of pine bitterness in my second try with this beer, but did get a bit of bite from the alcohol.

A: orange-to-amber, fairly clear, with foamy head that has some sustaining pour, and a little lacing
S: very floral, orange blossom, mango, melon (canteloupe) - with deeper tones of pine sawdust; maybe some peat. Use the right glass and/or wait for the beer to come to temperature to let the smells come out.

T: fruity sweetness in the front, papaya or melon (little orangey when chilled). This taste lingers, but is met by a pine wood bitterness that is more aggressive the colder the beer.

M: as may be obvious, I noted two different beers here at different temps. The colder version had a more harsh feel of pine; once it got to what I believe to be the proper temp, the feel mellowed, and seemed more driven by carbonation than dryness.

O: I am not sure if I like the fact this beer seemed to change more drastically than any beer I've noted before with different tastes as the beer warms. The colder tastes are more harsh and "astringent", the warmer tastes were more fruity and sweeter. Both were quite enjoyable, but I think I liked the "proper" temp beer a little better.
