Notes/Commercial Description:
Penn Quarter Porter is our first in a line of draft-only limited-release beer, and it's a robust porter! In the way that The Public is on the line between a pale ale and an IPA, this is on the line between a porter and a stout - with chocolate notes and a dry, roasted finish.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a mug. Pours pitch black with a nice brown head. Smells of coffee, chocolate, and very slight fruitiness. Tastes of slight berries with a very strong coffee. Beer is full bodied lighter carbonated but very drinkable. Overall, a very good beer.

A: dark, dark brown to black, nice giy edge head with significant lacing.

S: roasted grain notes and coffee, coming through more with warmth

T: dark roasted grains, some medium body coffee, just on the bitter side of a balance against sweetness. The middle taste I get a little oat flavor. The end taste is a bit of generic green (shrub-like) hops taste that lightly dries the mouth.

M: besides the light drying, which I like better than a hop-bomb ending in porters, the overall feel is just a tad weak. The taste does hit all parts of the mouth, though, so I'm between a notch higher and what I gave it.

O: I think to me it's one of the best porters I've had as far as enjoyment. Roasted malt characters backed by a light, dry bittering effect in the back, that's what I enjoy. This one is also right I the edge of being a stout, maybe that helps.

look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Poured from 12oz can into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: deep, rich brown hue, which lets no light through. Head is a thick finger of creamy tan foam with OK retention and not much in the way of lace.

Smell: slightly sweet malty aroma with a good chocolate character. It's got a nice roastiness, but not a big astringency, which I like. I'm a fan!

Taste: much roastier than the aroma with a little bit of burnt malt right up front. This subsides into a more balanced, but still quite roasty, porter profile. Bitterness is a little high, with hop character a little bit vegetal. Not bad; definitely robust.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and a decent creaminess.

Overall: I find this beer quite drinkable indeed. I wouldn't mind if it were available here on the West coast.

A: Classic dark chocolate color with mocha tan head. Poured into snifter, 2 finger head. Poor head retention/lacing qualities.

S: Light caramel, baker's chocolate, light cherry smoke. Weaker than expected even for such a light ABV, and it takes some time for it to warm and develop.

M: Good amount of bite immediately, medium carbonation, less bodied, but balanced with flavor. Semi-dry finish.

T/O: T: cinnamon macchiato, coffee ice cream finish, roasted grains, hazelnuts, orange bitter, white chocolate accents, balanced b/t sweet and roast. It makes a very good morning/breakfast beer.
