The Citizen Belgian Ale is inspired by the timeless Tripel style ales of Belgium. Using a traditional high gravity "Abbey" yeast strain that encourages the production of highly palatable ethanol notes supported by Aromatic and "The Citizen" also exhibits the noble hop spiciness that is common to most Belgian Ales. Reigning in at 7.0% ABV this is the Brau's strongest offering in our flagship portfolio. Become a Citizen of the world, one sip at a time!

Poured a hazy deep orangey-gold. Initially has a creamier white head that reduces down to slight presence around the circumference of the tulip glass. The aroma is mostly yeast with a hint of caramel. The taste has a nice tangy-ness to it, reminiscent of the way sourdough tastes. There are also some subtle fruit notes hiding in the back. There's a nice thickness to it and it's quite smooth. A very good Belgian-style pale ale.

This beer has a sweet, cloying flavor with maybe diacetyl (popcorn butter) at the finish; I can also taste the alcohol and it doesn't come through in an inviting way. There's some Belgian fruitiness as well. Overall not a good tasting beer in my opinion. Certainly doesn't fit the flavor profile for a Belgian Pale. The aftertaste gives me a shuddering feeling about halfway through the beer.

I will admit that I tried this beer for the first time a few days ago and drank it straight from the can at about 50 degrees and it was definitely a bad beer for that tasting (the GF, who has an acute sense of smell and a love for Belgian Trippels, said this beer tasted like "bad pennies" in her mouth and could not finish hers warm from the can).

Today, I tried it right from the fridge, pouring into a Chimay goblet. It's better, but still not good.
A creamy beige head poured frothy and subsided fairly quickly. The bouquet isn't bad, but nothing wonderful either - it has a slight metallic quality, maybe some canned corn smell to it.

As some other reviewers have pointed out, the date on the bottom of the can is not helpful. Mine says "Drink Me! 3/18/2014" so does that mean drink by 3/18 or born on 3/18? I don't know. Bottom line, I was not impressed, and did not find this beer enjoyable in the least bit. Come on DC Brau, I know you can do better.
