Shared by the new guy Friday night.
Light pumpkin spice, nice dark beer base. If more pumpkin beers followed this path I might enjoy them more.

This had a huge foamy brown head that coalesced to a thick cap above a deep porter brown body.

The nose has some tell tale spices like nutmeg, brown sugar, and cinnamon with a pulpy gourdish pumpkin.

The flavor was starchy with a protein like malt. There was a lot of pumpkin pulp with brown sugar and a spicy black licorice.

The feel was light, velvety and very crisp.

This was definitely a different take on a pumpkin beer and it ends with a lot of success.

draft at Rustico Ballston - kinda assuming this was the DC Brau version due to proximity and draft format

a: served in a tapered chalice, this baltic porter is a deep molasses brown in color - essentially black, with a frothy layer of head that retains quite well and leaves heavy lace on the walls of my glass

s: the nose consists of dry baking chocolate, nutty medium-dark barley, a light spice blend that adds complexity without any standout, moderate sugars with a nice complex sweetness, and a pleasant current of vanilla, enjoyable aroma

m: creamy, smooth light-medium carbonation and a soft, slightly weighty medium body

t: body of smooth roasted barley with light tones of dark, dry baking cocoa, some nuttier medium roasts, the solid roast flavor thinned a touch with some pale or lager malts to keep things manageable, some spices but well integrated and light - nothing particularly assertive as an individual, the pumpkin and vanilla blend into the mix well, nicely flavored

o: a nice take on a pumpkin ale, with the seasonal ingredients well applied to a baltic porter base, complimenting rather than overtaking - still, it doesn't have that strikingly unique character you'd expect from the ingredient list (or the brewer), as it stands, this is a very good beer, just without any push into a higher plane

Poured cold from the bottle. This beer had a very dark brown/orange colour with minimal head. There smell is that of a subtle pumpkin pie: pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and spices. The smell was not as strong as many of the other pumpkin beers. The taste is similar to the smell as a subtle, but not overwhelming, pumpkin flavour hits right away. It then moves to a bitter/smokey aftertaste.

Would I buy it again? Yes.
