Notes/Commercial Description:
An error in the brewing of DC Brau’s celebrated Double IPA, On the Wings of Armageddon, has led to the development of a new beer. The brew, also a Double IPA, is similar in body and taste to its progenitor while differing immensely in color and hop profile. CEO Brandon Skall expressed disappointment that fans of On the Wings of Armageddon would have to wait another few months for the much sought after beer, but in the same breath noted that he was excited to welcome this new brew to the DC Brau family. "Sometimes you have to embrace blunders," said Skall. "In this case, our mistake lead to something delicious and badass, so while we’re upset about the error in OTWOA brewing, we’re happy it led to Deus Ex Machina."

Deus Ex Machina, taken from the Latin phrase meaning "God from the Machine," weights in at 8.75% ABV and 131 IBUs. It’s hopped with Falconer’s Flight and Columbus varieties, which come together to create a virtual pine forest of super dank, mouth-coating flavors with underlying hints of delicate sugar-coated fruit. The brew-in-error is a beautiful crystal clear golden orange in color.

a: pours a deep orange-amber in color, sporting an off-white head that coats well and shows good retention

s: nose of deep citrus and some musty, earthy pine with a full-on caramel malt backing, a little fruity with some sweet sugar aromas, nice start

m: medium-full bodied, smoothly carbonated

t: big malt structure - lots of caramel and fruit sweetness, with a musty, earthy hop flavor of steeped citrus and pine needles, big and sticky malt, a touch of alcohol

o: enjoyable, if a little off-kilter, would prefer less of a malt-skew, on the wings kills this one

Poured from a growler into my Flying Mouflan glass. It poured amber orange in color with a thin sticky white head.

The aroma has a big juicy hoppiness to it. Peach, mango and pineapple flavors are all there along with some more tropical fruit punch like flavors. It's Sweet and juicy almost like a fruit juice. I loved the hoppy aroma overall.

The Hawaiian punch and tropical fruit flavors carry through into the taste up front. It becomes more resiny and bitter in the finish with some notes of grapefruit rind. It's got some really good candied fruit flavors to it as well.

The mouthfeel is a little on the light side with moderate carbonation. Overall, I thought it was a very good beer. I loved the juicy aroma. The taste had a little more of a resiny, bitter profile to it but was still pretty solid as well. Very enjoyable beer overall.

I liked this beer. I enjoy columbus hops and columbus heavy IPAs are always a real treat for me. Poured from a growler into a DC Brau cervoise glass.

Beer is orange and hazy with a white head, small bubbles. some lacing, moderate carbonation, nice retention, looks like beer.

Aroma is earthy, resiny, hoppy, floral, hints of fruit and hop candy popping through.

I guess the "falconer's flight" is still there, fighting but this beer is a hard bitter resinous affair that coats the mouth, moderate bitterness on the finish. A nice IPA but the hop balance in Wings is probably more palatable, I would have this again (I drank half a growler myself).

Cheers and thank you go out to Kegatron for sharing this growler with me. Poured into a standard pint glass, the brew appears a fairly clear, lighter orange to copper color. A finger of patchy head sits atop the brew that is slightly off-white and it paints the wall of the glass with a complete curtain as it recedes.

The aroma of this brew is quite nice. I'll admit that it doesn't quite pack a perfume punch that jumps out of the glass and wrestle your nasal cavity into a head lock. No, it doesn't do that. However, when you bury your nose in the glass, everything you pick up on is enjoyable. Hop qualities come across as floral and fruity with pulp, rinds, citrus zest and a bit of earthy mango. The more this opens up in my glass, the more tropical it gets leaning a bit towards peach and pineapple. Zero indication of any alcohol here in the aromatics and the faintest hint of toasty grain tries to make itself known. As it warms up and the glass is swirled, it has almost a cheesy to catty quality that was hidden initially.

The taste is more focused on herbal aspects and malt than the aroma would lead you to believe. Flavors of herbs, pulp and rinds come to mind from the hops with some hints of more floral and fruity elements. Mango and a slight grassy indication give way to a mild catty appeal. Here in the flavor is the first signs of that 8.6% abv. The alcohol is mildly fusel and is not out of place, it sits nicely between the flavors and helps push the herbal flavoring towards rindy. Into the aftertaste is a flavor of toasty grain that is a nice backbone to all the hop flavoring going on here.

This is a medium bodied offering with a modest to lighter level of carbonation. I could see this on tap having a little more pop and zip to it but as-is the slightly lower level of carbonation leaves this a bit watery feeling and uneventful mid-palate. I will state though that the lightness and lack of effervescence makes this brew nearly poundable which is dangerous for the abv. I see this brew is considered a whoops by the brewer. Regardless, this was nicely done and I am appreciative to have given it a try. Thanks again Heath.

64 oz brewery filled growler into an oversized tulip glass.

Pours a clear copper, topped with 2 thick fingers of rich bright-white head. This retains with a creamy dollop in the middle of the glass and a rich ½ finger of froth when swirled, which leaves back a decent looking cascade of sudsy lacing that slowly drips down the sides of the glass. The aroma has some awesome fresh power to it, smelling of pine cones, grapefruit and a touch of spice. Herbal character, light tropical fruit notes and a gentle breadiness help soften the back of the nose up a bit. That pine and grapefruit really get the biggest push here and it is pretty awesome.

The taste is similar, with juicy bitter grapefruit and resins cutting across the tongue with a bright feeling ferocity that spreads pine, spice and bitterness out into a dry aggressive finish. Herbal tones, sweet fruit and grains do their best trying to balance this and do a pretty darn good job at it, all things considered. It’s just that strong finish really lingers hard. The mouthfeel is medium to fuller bodied, with a slick and creamy feeling carbonation that flows rather easily here for the size and the overall hoppiness of this. Alcohol is present and while it doesn’t necessarily interfere with each sip, it does however start to wear down the palate after a couple of glasses.

This was sweeter and boozier than the OTWOA is but there is no doubt that this has just as full and bright feeling of a hop profile as that beer does. Despite having to take my time a little more with each glass, I’d be down with this beer any time! This is about as good of a “ha(o)ppy accident” as I’ve ever tried. Thanks for releasing it!

Un-marked 22 oz bottle from Chad. Poured into my Brau tulip.

Appearance: Pours a deep glowing orange. With a two finger white-ish head. Pretty good retention and lacing

Aroma: Dank resinous hops. Big citrusy grapefruit and orange peel. Earthy, grassy, and hints of some biscuit-y malt in the back somewhere.

Taste: The dank columbus hops are very prevalent. Juicy citrusy and tropical hops also make their presence be known. Grapefruit and orange peel, hints of some biscuit-y malt appear here and there.

Mouthfeel: Powerful. Medium to full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Great bitter and drying finish keeps you coming back. Pretty damn good for a "mistake"

Picked up a growler of this at DC Brau today. This is On the Wings of Armageddon gone wrong.

Pours a fairly dark color for a DIPA, a reddish-brown with a medium white head. The smell on this beer is incredible - the dank columbus hops and the citrusy Falconer's Flight come together very nicely and there's a little bit of malt lurking in the background. Unfortunately the flavor doesn't quite live up to the amazing aroma on this beer. The hops really come through nicely, but the malt backbone is pretty heavy and comes through a little too strong and doesn't blend with the hops as well as it could. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and a little sticky. Overall, this is a pretty impressive beer for one that was apparently a messed up version of On the Wings of Armageddon. It's not quite as good as the beer it was supposed to be, but is still pretty damn good. If it wasn't quite so malty, it would be a huge hit in my book.

On-tap at Churchkey, poured into a pint glass.

A- Pours a perfectly clear golden orange color, topped with a finger of creamy white head, leaves delicate lacing.

S- Very inviting aroma of juicy citrus, grapefruit and mango, also some bitter rind and pine sap. A bit of black pepper and mild caramel sweetness become apparent as well.

T- Big rush of initial fruit and citrus, lots of orange, pineapple and mango, very juicy, bright and vivid. Some caramel malt becomes noticeable mid-palate before an annihilatingly bitter grassy, herbal, piney flavor dominates the finish. A bit of booze on the finish but not too much.

M- Medium-bodied, good carbonation, a bit oily and sticky, a hint of alcohol warmth.

O- I haven't been able to try OTWOA yet, but this beer is no slouch; the hop flavors are really great and it's a very fun, drinkable beer overall.
