A: A deep murky brown in the glass, very little head to speak of.

S: When I first poured this brew, the hops were the first thing I picked up. Once it was in the glass the caramel malts really come out. Caramel and bread, followed by grapefruit, and a touch of pine.

T: Caramel, with a little bit of spice, there is a little bit of orange in there, as well as citrus from the hops. Actually really nice.

M: Medium bodied, and the carbonation is fine and fairly abundant. A little more lively than I would like, but still nice.

O: Overall I wasn't expecting a whole lot form the aroma, but the flavor is well balanced, and interesting. (642 characters)

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #70 (November 2012):

Reminds of some of the old school robust Red Ales aka American Strong Ales from a decade or more ago. A bit raw and chaotic but not so much that it loses its drinkability, love the fact that this is a “in your face” type of ale. Without a doubt this will take care of your hop fix.

LOOK: Hazed reddish copper hue, sticky light tan lacing

SMELL: Pungent, hop resin, spicy rye, rose water, dates, minty, orange pith, tobacco, caramel

TASTE: Bitter, slightly hop astringent, pungent, chewy, rye spice, biscuity, hay, grapefruit, mint, fresh grass, passion fruit, quite warming, caramel, bitter alcoholic finish (730 characters)

Poured into an imperial pint glass a lighter amber shade with a thinner but sticky white head atop.some pine resin and caramel malts in the nose but they really don't stick out at ya,not bad just wanted a little more oomph.Flavors have a nice resiny/spicy hopped up start then meld into a deep caramely maltiness with an ubrupt finis. The alcohol creeps a little and it has a nice shot of hops it just lacks that "something" to be really good,it's decent. (454 characters)

A: A good looking hazy and foggy "caramely" cooper.

S: The nose is barely there. A little bit o' sweet date but you gotta try hard.

T: Lot's of buttery malt and mild hop. A slight bitterness lingers on the tongue.

M: The mouth feel really belie's the taste. It's really thin for a 8% beer. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing, just unexpected. Carbonation also in waning, but again, not such a bad thing with this brew. Still, a lot of stick icky on the tongue.

O: The lighter mouth feel coupled with the 8% makes this a dangerous combo. Goes down way too easy and before you know it you're feelin' a little heady. I enjoy this beer a lot. It's got a great creamy head and wonderful lacing. If you can get over the thin body and low carbonation I think you'll find it quit enjoyable. (790 characters)

16 oz can

Pours medium ambe, khaki cap that stays pretty well and leaves nice looking sheeting on the glass.

Malty nose with caramel and maple coming to mind

Malty brew, imperial red ale in my book. Malts and tasty caramel in control here. Smooth, easy drinking and dangerously tasty. Nice offering from Finch.

Would work just fine in a chicken/pork marinade (369 characters)

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a Surly tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a somewhat hazy amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three finger off white head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing.

Smell: An earthy, juicy, and sweet malt forward aroma with hints of caramel, biscuit, and citrus. Upfront toasted malt with sweet hints of caramel, biscuit, grains, toast, toffee, yeast, and subtle roast. Spicy hints of rye. Sweet hints of sugar. Solid hop presence with earthy hints of grass and pine along with citrus fruit hints of orange, lemon, and grapefruit. A pretty solid big red aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, an earthy, spicy, juicy, and sweet malt forward taste with good notes of caramel, biscuit, rye, and citrus. Toasted malt with some upfront notes of caramel, biscuit, toffee, toast, grains, yeast, and some light roast chocolate. Spicy notes from the rye. A little sugar sweetness as well. Earthy and herbal hops with notes of pine resin and grass. Citrus hop notes of orange, grapefruit, and lemon. Solid balance. A pretty nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Chewy, spicy, and fairly drying on the finish. Alcohol heat is hidden well.

Overall: A pretty solid take on an imperial Red Ale. Good caramel malt flavors with a solid kick of rye spice and hops. (1,336 characters)

Burnished copper color with a beige orange colored head that lingers long. Aroma of ripe stone fruit, brown sugar, floral notes. Alcohol stays subdued. Flavors of toffee, caramel, grainy malt, brown sugar, some sweetness from the alcohol, notes of florals and lemon. Interesting mix. Moderate mouthfeel, even carbonation. Good beer overall. (346 characters)

Hard-poured into a classic pilsner glass.

From the outset, I don't smell much except a light citrus and a hint of bread. When held to the light, this pig gives off a nice burnished orange, topped with a tan head... not too unlike a slow-roasted suidae. Head fades leaving a small, thin, but sustaining cap. Lacing varied between dots and a grid-like network of strands. Very cool. First sip provides a good malt presence which cedes to citrusy hops. Bit of dry sourness from rye? Mouthfeel is medium, not too thin. Finishes with more hops and a bit of carbonation, for a clean refreshing experience. Some reviews say its cloying, but I think it's just fine. I look forward to trying their Pig on Wood version. (710 characters)
