Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of roasted malts, a touch of hops. Taste is roasted malts, a bit of chocolate, mild hops, balanced and mild. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall, while a bit light on the hops, is a pretty good beer.

Poured into 34oz mug; jet black with a moderate brown head made of tight foam that doesn't fade at all. Smell is roasted malt, coffee and chocolate, with floral and citrusey hops. Taste is big roasted malt, lots of coffee with some sweet chocolate and dark fruit yeast flavors, along with a finish of bitter citrusey hops. Mouthfeel is medium-full.
Overall this is a good cascadian dark ale; more heavy on the roasted malt than the hops, but that's what makes it unique.

Somewhat a surprise here. Opaque as a good stout with a HUGE tan head and tons of tan lacing. Nose of chocolate, coffee, spicy hops, and deep roasted malts. Taste is up front bittering hops with sweet malts to the sides. Coffee and bitter bakers chocolate comes through on the back. Highly carbonated mouthfeel makes it tingly to the hop flavor. Beefy for a black IPA. Excellent. Have had few Finch's brews I dislike, and for not being a hop head either I am changing or they just do it right. Cheers!

Consumed 2/12/13

Appearance: Pours a decidedly black color - starts with a large, dense, beige head, but fades to a borderline nonexistent cap - leaves some decent lacing though

Smell: Burnt, with more burnt - burnt popcorn and burnt citrus rinds - pine, orange, and grapefruit - some citrus rind and pith - some roastiness, dark chocolate, baker's chocolate, and charred biscuits

Taste: Remarkably burnt - charred, extremely burnt malts - chocolate malts, burnt malts, dark chocolate, baker's chocolate - char, ash, and tobacco - some burnt pine needles - orange, grapefruit - some oily citrus, rind, and pith - some burnt biscuits serve as a nice base

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely carbonated, nicely smooth

Overall: Burnt & Char

This is interesting, but it suffers from some common pitfalls for the style. The malts are burnt to the extent that the hops are overshadowed. And it smells like burnt popcorn.

Among the best Black IPA's ive had. black with a rim of brown, a big frothy tan had that quickly settles leaving suds all over the glass. Smells wonderful, some new citrusy hop aromas layered over more traditional spicy minty notes. more roasted malt comes through on the tongue than most Black IPAs but it quickly gives way tohops that certainly make their presence felt but dont overwhelm with any dominant flavor. finch's have gone outside th box here to make a more subtle beer, which i think works well with a convoluted style like this.

Snagged a can at my local shop for $3.25. INto a pint glass.

A - Even though it fizzes like a soda this beer has a 1/2 inch of deep mocha head that sticks around for quite a bit. The beer itself is dark and viscous like an Imperial Stout.
S - Quite balanced roast and hops very DiPA like with a malty body. Not as resinous smelling as most black IPA's, this should be interesting.
T - Taste leads with chocolate malts quickly turning to mild ashy roasts and finish is mildly hoppy with a bit of herbal hops in the finish. Even though its mostly malt base the bite on this beer is somewhat medicinal and I am not enjoying it as much as I should.
M - Body is somewhat thin for the ABV medium at best. It does go down smooth.

Overall it does seem to have enough carbonation to age which may take some of the bite out of those hops. but I am really not interested in trying. It just wasn't for me.

A- Poured from the 16oz tallboy can to a tulip snifter for the review. Black bodied with some light piercing the very edges, not motor oil. Light mocha tan head forms to about two fingers with a thick and frothy, creamy texture. Head retention is pretty good. Lacing forms with thick bubbly webs at the top and thick patches below that.

S- Hops don't dominate but they are certainly the most notable element. Aromatics from the hops include notes of citrus zest, oranges, tangerine, earthy and pine elements. Backing these hops is roasted and toasty fresh cracked grains.

T- As with the aroma, hops are the main characteristic as one would expect with a Black IPA. The hops provide a nice bit of pine resin, oily citrus zest, earthy and floral notes. Malts provide a base with a lot of cocoa powder, dark roast cereal grains, toasted nuts and slight caramel hints.

MF- Moderately thick bodied, perhaps just a bit on the light side of the middle but not a problem. Medium-high carbonation gives this a crisp feel and a silky, slightly creamy texture. Finishes with moderate hop and some roast bitterness.

It seems that nowadays everyone is releasing a Black IPA and this is yet another solid example. The hops are super fresh with citrus and pine attributes atop a roasty but not decadent malt base. This allows the hops to shine.
