Pours a deep red murky brown with an off-white head that settles into a faint ring. Murky looking brew, but looks appealing.

Nose is not too enjoyable. Vinegary ketchup, somewhat medicinal, and musty. Not much in the way of what I would expect from a lambic, but maybe what is expected for a faro. Flavor is better: sweet brown sugar up front, caramel apples, and more vinegar. Not very sour, but slightly tart. Has a weird, almost too ripe green apple aftertaste. Weak carbonation, more silky than effervescent.

I guess fados really aren't my thing. Still decent though. (573 characters)

This is my first faro so I have no idea what to expect. Let’s hope it’s good.

Appearance: Wow,Girardin Faro is a great looking beer. Beautiful caramel-copper-golden body (crystal clear - though that was expected since it is filtered) with a good sized white head that lasts acceptably well and leaves some nice lace.

Smell: I think if I had smelled this, not knowing what it was, there would have been just enough similarities to the gueuze for me to guess it came from Girardien. Lightly tart apples and grapefruit to start; then sweet caramel, lots of oak and a burst of spices (enough to make me think that this beer might be spiced) - ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon. Funk is present though in far smaller quantities than the gueuze - sweat, wet wood, musty leather and a touch of hay.

Taste: Lightly tart and fruity upfront with apples, grapefruit and white grapes. Caramel sweetness takes over pretty quickly and dulls the flavour a little bit. Spices and funk lurk behind the caramel. Nutmeg, clove, mold, earth, oak and hay are all noted. I actually like the sweetness; I just wish it didn't dull the funk.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, fairly sticky from the sugar with a good, low level of carbonation.

Overall: Great beer from a very interesting style. I will have this again. (1,371 characters)

A rare faro tick courtesy of westcoastbeerlvr. Thanks, Craig. Pours clear amber with low level of carbonation, no head. Smells like caramel, oak and funk. Little bit of sourness shines through, and quite a bit more -bal and funk than I was expecting. Some hay-like scents. Taste is actually more oaky than sweet, though there's plenty of sugar to even out the sourness and tannins. Wet wood, caramel, bitterness and tannic oak in the finish. Has the Girardin essence, just very sweet. Couldn't drink a lot of this, but it's decent in small quantities. Best faro I've tasted at this point, really not bad. (604 characters)

Bottle. Pours a murky amber color with a slight white head. The aroma is more funky than expected and has a slight herbal, medicinal note. The taste is quite a surprise and reminds me of sweet peppermint. The medicinal notes in the nose are slightly present in the taste but not as much, I think they get covered up by the sweetness of the malt. Very easy drinking with a light/medium mouthfeel. Some notes of cedar or wood as well. (432 characters)

Pours a copper amber. Has a beige head to it with decent retention.

Aroma: Sweet with brown sugar and spice notes up front. It has a little bit of fruit flavors and some funk to it.

Taste: Really dry tasting. A lot of brown sugar and spice to it. It has some oak and vanilla with some fruit flavors. A lot of brett flavors here. Not that impressive.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy. A bit bubbly surprisingly. It has a medium body with a bit higher amount of carbonation. Ends a little dry.

Overall, I somewhat like it. Not something I want a lot of, but it was great to try this one. Pretty unique. (600 characters)

A faro i actually like. Who knew such a thing existed. Beer is amber to red in color and mostly clear with a thin white head of small bubbles and moderate carbonation.

Aroma is mostly lactic and some acetic with some sweetness.

Beer is moderately dry and light in body with a mild forward sweetness and some lactic and acetic notes leading up to a clean finish. Its got a nice mouthfeel and is quite drinkable. (412 characters)

This stuff is disgusting and tastes like diapers. Much more funky than any other Girardin I have tasted. Pour is brown, no real head or lacing. I was expecting it to be sweet but it was not. Rubbery and a bit oxidized, definitely a "yuck" factor present. My first faro but I can't believe it is supposed to taste like this. This is the sort of beer that grows up with a father that beats them constantly in a trailer park and winds up on an episode of cops. (457 characters)

Pours a pretty, light amber that's clear. Nose is cherry, butterscotch, faint raspberry, with that lambic funkiness. Flavor is slightly thin, with apple, pear, a touch of sweat, and berry sweetness on the finish with some nice acidity. A very approachable, yet respectable lambic. (280 characters)

Cork and caged 0.375 litre bottle.

Faro's can be really sweet or really sour, this one leans towards the sour end, but has a sweetness to it also.

Murky brown to reddish in colour, small off-white head which left some limp lacing on the glass.

The small was rather off-putting, an aroma of bile and sour sick hit my nose, not nice.

The tastebuds took a hammering here, initially sweet, it swiftly reversed into a sour vinegar, cooking apple, scrumpy cider sort of taste. Strange how it changed so quickly into a homebrewed cider sort of beer.

I found it difficult to finish and that is rare with me, so not the best faro I've had. (635 characters)

Picked this up at Bier Tempel in Brugge. Served in a flute glass. Cork is stamped 2009.

A - Pours with big light tan foam that dissipates slowly and leaves tons of sticky lacing. Transparent dark coppery brown color with bubbles racing to the top.

S - An interesting mix of apple fruitiness, bretty funk, brown sugars, spice, some slight medicinal character, maybe a touch of wood.

T - Taste is more cherry, but again with brown sugar, spice, and a nice funky finish. Less interesting than the smell. Very clean finish and minimal aftertaste.

M - Medium-light, juicy, sticky body, but finishes dry with some light cottonmouth sensation that lingers. The carbonation seems to have all gone into the head, as the residual CO2 is quite light.

D - This is pretty easy drinking stuff. It's not as drinkable as classic gueuze due to the sweetness, but I could easily put back a 375ml bottle. (890 characters)

Big ups to Alex for breaking this one out as I arrived at his place. Poured from a 375ml bottle into a flute.

A - Pours reddish brownish with an off-colored white head. Very large and frothy with lots of sticky lacing along the sides and a good two fingers of head.

S - Sweet on the nose with dark fruits and some burnt caramel.

T - Sweet dark fruits, plums, raisins, with a mildly funky finish. It pretty much goes from sweet to tart in no time, which is unlike anything I've ever had. A different beer, bit I'm digging it.

M - Super-light, very light carbonation, much like juice with some tart mixed in there. A nice dry finish.

D - The split of this bottle helps because I don't know if I could drink all too much of it. That said, I would drink again but doubt I'll ever see it again. (798 characters)

A: Reddish amber color with a surprisingly big head with just the slightest pinkish hue. Good retention as well and nice lacings.

S: A rather mild smell, restrained and easygoing for a lambic. You can tell that the vinegar and funky notes ad subdued by the sweetening. Still some vinegar, apples, lemon, grass and hay. Gentle funkiness as well. Some tart fruity aromas.

T: The taste is also restrained and gentle. It lacks a little complexity and perhaps some balance but it's still tasty. Nice fruity notes of apples and some cherries. Lemons. Mild tartness balanced by a well integrated sweetness. Luckily, the sweetness doesn't have that candy-like feel to it that some overly sweetened lambics have. Restrained notes of wet hay, barnyard and earthy yeast. The finish is dry with a refreshing tartness, citric notes and a gentle grassy bitterness. Some slightly too prominent mineral notes in the finish as well.

M: Moderate to light body. The carbonation seems a little off, it's like the bubbles are too big or something.

D: A very easy to drink lambic with mellow flavors and a restrained tartness due to the sweetening. Refreshing. All in all, not a bad beer. (1,172 characters)

rich copper colored pour with a short lived vigorous white head. seems pretty dark, no?

it smells sweet and grainy yet still tart and dusty... aromas include caramel, cement, leather and red apple cider with warming spices.

same thing goes for the flavor.... it*s a mix of sweet and sour i*ve not yet sampled. flavors of sweet bruised red apples, caramel, dust, copper/minerals and yeast with a mild soft tartness. the finish is dry and grainy with some cinnamon creeping in as it warms. medium to rich bodied. it*s rather thick and oily but parching and dry at the same time.

Small corked and caged bottle, poured into a snifter.

Glowing orange in color, with a nice, long lasting white head, lots of lacing.
Musty aroma, lots of leather, quite obvious Brett smell. Guarana seeds, multiple fruits, sour notes.
Light bodied, nice carbonation, this is by far the best Faro I ever had; it is indeed sweeter than the original 1882, but not by much; there are multiple sour, acidic notes along with the sweety fruitiness, and lots of earthiness and funkiness. A very impressive example, high drinkability since it is well balanced and just lightly sweet. A masterpiece of flavor packed in such a low ABV. (626 characters)

Girardin's Faro would appear, in my limited experience with this rare style, slightly darker than others. It has an almost metallic, coppery brown colour that shines with genteel ruby. The combination of tones and lack of clarity give it a sand-like complexion. An acceptable level of khaki beige head sits atop.

The aroma is layered and full of funk - we're talking George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic All-Stars-level funk! These yeasty notes, combined with a light scent of ripe field berries and sugar, give the aroma a Greek yogurt-like characteristic. Other fruits, notably cantaloupe, can also be smelt. The rock sugar is present and plentiful, lending a cotton-candy like quality. This is one smell I can definitely groove to!

The mouthfeel, however short lived, offers a rousing and invigorating experience that feels like pop-rocks exploding on the tongue! The candy sugar is tooth decayingly sweet, but the base lambic - and it's funk - is not completely crowded out.

While the funk hits upfront, bitterness, malt, and fruit esters soon follow. Earthy flavours of rotting fruit are discrete but present as is, to no surprise, the sugar. A little bit of pepper like spice comes through. Although the carbonation is pretty low, the beer is very quenching. It is a taste that - owing to the sweetness - I imagine most people would find agreeable.

I've enjoyed all of the Girardin lambics I've tried but their Faro, in particular, seems the stand out offering. It was super neat, and a little unlike the couple other Faros I've tried. It had an untypical amount of depth for the style, a touch of fruit, gums-swelling level of sweet sugar, and a mellow jam session of funk. This is something I might have to seek out again... (1,832 characters)

My first faro, thanks probtsk. Pours like a naturally carbonated aged beer, similar to geuze but for the pinking tinge. White head. Cherry in the aroma, and significantly in the taste. Medium and smooth mouthfeel. Easy drinking with a meal. On the sweet side,sugariness covers a tad of astringency without food it would be too much.
Note: the bubbling part looked like the stuff they give me before stomach x-rays, to cear the stomach. It did. It may be me so I have not adversely affected the ratings. (502 characters)

A: Red body with a nice thick off white head. Very blear bodied.

S: Sweet aroma but with a definite subtle brett character. Very great combination of sweet and tart.

T: Very delicious. I love faros. A great version of a geuzue. The extreme tartness from the brett is cut nicely by the candi sugar. A bit more tart than other faros but not in a crisp way. The flavor seems too blended to me. I'd like the sweetness and tartness to stick out separately better.

M: Fairly light bodied but the wheat gives it a bit of chewiness.

Pours a clear orange/brown, thin off white head, some lace spots, pretty neat colour. Smell is funky, spices, brown sugar, strawberries and other fruits, canteloupe, nice sweet edge. Taste is sweet, sugar, fruits, caramel/honey middle, funky sour fruit, spiced bread, nice. Mouthfeel is light bodied with low carbonation, silky smooth. Bottle: Poured a light reddish/brown color lambic with a big foamy off-white head with limited retention. Aroma is quite funky with limited tartness and acidity which was a bit disappointing. Taste was similar to the gueuze but as if the tartness and acidity had been removed and replace with light sugary notes. Body was a bit too light with some good carbonation. I find it always interesting too try those traditional examples but this one really miss the mark. (464 characters)

37.5cl bottle, corked and caged.

pours very deep reddish copper, crystal clear. the small fluffy off-white head drops fairly fast and leaves no lace.

aroma is excellent. funky. cherry and sugar. rock candi. bit of dark chocolate too. devil's food cake in a glass. bit of oak and vanilla hiding in the background too.

taste is good. there is a bit of funk and sourness hiding in there, but with a nice fruit and sugar character up front. bit of sour cherry. rock candy again. not as sweet as i was expecting from the aroma. hints of vanilla in the background.

mouthfeel is good. medium well-integrated carbonation. medium body.

drinkability is great. not overly sweet. balanced and very enjoyable. nice refreshing drink on a warm august day. i really liked this one, the best of the three girardin beers we sampled. (938 characters)

Thanks to hopdog for breaking out this bottle. Stamped 01 04 on the cork...
Appears a transparent light amber with a small, light tan head the quickly fades away. Nary a bit of lacing is left around the glass. Tiny amounts of CO2 rise to the top.
Smell is of butter cream, caramel, brown sugar, light funk, oxidation, and mild cork.
Taste is sugary up front, rubbery, fresh plastic bags out of the box(if that makes sense), and light brown sugar.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly tannic of wood, a bit of a "yuck" factor with the plastic notes and junky garbage outweighing the intriguing wild yeast notes that are present.
This is a weird style and I've got nothing to really compare it against. I'm going by my overall impressions of this brew. (755 characters)

Girardin is one of my top Geuze brands, so I’m expecting a lot from this Faro.

Served at room temperature. I got a firm grey brown head, but it immediately collapsed. A flocky creamy head remains.
It’s colour is a rusty orange and very small bubbles are running through.
The sent is perfect. A very rich combination of molten butter, malt and geuze sourness.
Taste is heavenly, very strong, complex and varied. Opens with that typical geuze sourness, goes into a full ripe nut / wooden taste that involves yeast and malt tones. Evolves to ripe banana combined with modestly sugared dates. From now the brew becomes lighter and spicier (pepper), some bitterness with sour undertone (resembles an old wine). And it ends off with those barnyard elements, tart too and the yeast plays up while it struggles with the sourness for the finish. In the end they both cross the line at the same time.
Aftertaste gives old dark bread, pepper, slight sourness and mould.

I’m flabbergasted, I have troubles finding the correct words. Let’s keep it to superb! Expectations valorised!! (1,104 characters)
