Girardin Gueuze 1882 (Black Label) 2010
Appearance: Opens with a vigorous pop. The first pour with yeast reserved appears a bit darker than straw yellow, clear with a soapy, well retaining frothy head. Not unlike some champagne. Ten minutes later, the head is still perfect.
Smell: The room fills with the pleasing odor of gueuze. Tart, like fresh squeezed lemon juice. Funky, airy aroma. Basement citrus.
Taste: Very nice and rather intense sourness, strong acetic bite, soulful and uplifting flavor. An experience in the art of taste. Awesome Gueze here, meant to be sipped and savored. Lemon dances with piith of a kumquat or unripe citrus. Rind like. Wheat and barnyard elements are another layer. Oaky tannins lend a drying mouthfeel and taste of damp wood. Decently bitter, which plays off the sourness. Moreso sour than tart, and done so expertly.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied, lingering sour. Refreshing in nature, mildly puckering, with just a slight warming alcohol. Exemplary in the dryness category (if there is such a thing) and the finesse of the brewers is worthy of compliment.
Overall: A quintessential example of its style, the Girardin Gueuze 1882 is an experience not to be missed. Intense to the unaccustomed, but a worthwhile endeavor for the connoisseur. Treat yourself to a bottle, and discover a piece of beer folklore.

Bottle poured at Tipples Rare and Barrel Aged Beer Tasting on July 13, 2014. Pours light yellowish gold with a small rim of white head on top. Aroma of candi sugar and mint leaves, dry, dusty, light citrus. Flavor is funky like my gym socks. Whoah. Some lemon notes, dry oakiness, and some vanilla as well here. More chewy body than other gueuzes in the class that I've had, and low plus carbonation. Nice brew overall, and a bit of a change-up from the LP Gueuze earlier in the night. Recommended.
