A: A nice red color with a 3 cm pink head that settles into nice lacings after a while.

S: The smell is milder and more gentle than expected. Obviously, here's plenty of cherries, but they are accompanied by a prominent smell of fruit yogurt. Notes of fermenting fruit and a hint of tart apples. Some grass and wood. The smell is actually quite weird. It's not bad, it's just not what I expect from a fruit lambic.

T: The taste is better, though. However, the taste is also somewhat weak and easygoing, and it lacks a little complexity. Cherries with both sweet and tart edges dominate. Every now and then the cherry flavors goes a little candy-like. Some notes of grass and a somewhat sharp wheaty maltiness. Mild funky brett note. A hint of vanilla. The finish is tart, but far from being ruthlessly sour, with mineral flavors, some sweetness and lingering cherry notes.

M: Medium body, not very sparkling mouthfeel. Nice dry finish.

D: Good, but not great. The beer has a nice blend of tart and sweet flavors and it is very easy to drink. But it's slightly too gentle and lame to get me really exited. It lacks some complexity. Still tasty, though.

This is nearly 4 years in the cellar.
A: It pours hazy red with a slight brown tint under a thin, fizzy white head.
S: Has a tart nose with cherry, lemon, and ripe fruit backed by faint wet horse blanket.
T: Big cherry palate with tart lemon, light barnyard, vanilla, no hops or smoke falvors.
F: Super creamy with super fine carbonation, light, refreshing.
O: After 4 years in the cellar the beer has developed a very fine texture giving the sensation of drinking a fine, soft cherry lemon foam with a bit of funk. The texture more than makes up for the slightly faded cherry flavors.

Quite a sweet cherry flavour, some nice tart acidity, but too sweet when you compare it to their gueuze, still quite nice, refreshing, medium to full bodied, fairly complex, but, yes, too sweet.

2013 vintage. 375ml corked and caged bottle into Hill Farmstead stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a foamy 1 finger white head with moderate retention. Beer is a clear dark red. Lacing is spotty, stringy and sparse with ok stick. Average.

Nose is candied cherry and artificial sugar. A bit of oak hides in the background. I don't like hints of artificial sweetner in my lambic.

Opens cherry meat and pit. Sweet and juicy in the middle with bitter cherry skin at the end. Some foam and yeasty bitterness also. Pretty terrible.

Light bodied with low carbonation. Slick and smooth in the mouth and dry going down. Finishes mellow with a barely there aftertaste. Decent.

Some lambic wants to be traditional and other lambic wants to be sweetened... that's all fine and good except that Girardin kriek seems to want to straddle the line and does neither well. Its too sweet, not at all funky but with a rotting wood bitterness that just doesn't work. Hard pass on this one.

bottled very early 2011, most likely january.

pour is a dark ruby. fluffy pinkish head. nice retention.

light ripe cherry pie. some old musty basement with light oak. hints of tartness.

some cherry deep within the flavor but for a 2011, kind of weak. sweetness through out. maybe a hint of oak. overall, weak.

moderate to mild carbonation. a very faint dryness.

not something i will ever get again. oddly enough, their gueuze is just amazing.

Unmarked bottle thanks to dyan.

Pours a muddy brownish-red color with a small off-white head (but then again I got the bottom of the bottle). Substantial yeast sediment adorns the bottle after it is poured.

Aroma is vinegary with cherry and funk.

Flavor is really vinegary. The cherry flavor is not so good, a little drowned out by the vinegar.

Medium body with decent carbonation. Not too much sourness.

This was a very disappointing kriek, on the lower end of the style for sure (although considerably better than the bad bottle of Hanssens Oude Kriek I once had).

Served via bottle into goblet @ Bier Circus (Brussels, Belgium) on 7/5/12.

Pours a clear rose in the glass, topped with a finger of pink colored head. This retains with more of a fizzy look, leaving back foamy swathes of lacing that stick. The aroma smells of fresh cherries and backing sugars. Some souring funk mixes in as well and picks up some steam as this warms.

The taste is fresh tart cherries, with a souring edge to the profile that is evened by some sugary sweetness in the background. This is dry and funky on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and lively feeling on the tongue, with a firm and crisp feeling creaminess that fills up the back of the palate.

This was solid Kriek, with some nice cherry flavor and a well balanced tartness to it that never got to be too much. I just wish that it could have wowed me a little more.

Bottle: Poured a beautiful red colored beer with a huge head with excellent retention. Aroma is quite complex mix of lightly sweet cherries and some sourness. I was quite surprised by the balance between the cherries and the sourness as I drank this beer. Definitely a change from your juice/sugar added fruit lambic that are more commonly available to me. Wish I could drink some more of this wonderful drink.

Poured from the bottle into a stemless wine glass. Mild pop off the cork. From notes.

Scarlet red body, with a bit of cloudy opaque character but not hazy. Brown to light tan head with a clean appearance. Some interesting spotty leg wet like lacing as well.

Interesting kriek aroma. Mild cherry like notes with some pepper tartness. Mild acetic notes and hints of menthol mint as well, with funky quality sort of dominating.

Palate hints more towards cherry cough drop candy a bit on first sip. A real nice herbal tea like quality on the mid palate, which gets stronger on the aftertaste. Solid tartness bringing a bit of pepper and mild red wine like vinegar quality too, but a thin body slightly becomes distracting.

A unique tasting kriek though and one I would have again and can enjoy.

Inflatablechair provided this one at a tasting recently.... Very cool Sammy!!

Pours with a pinkish head atop a cloudy red brew.

Nose is sweet cherry.... sorta doughy... something that I identify as smelling like cinnamon.... smells sweet... only mild funk.

Flavor mirrors the nose... again, only hints of funk... the cherry reminds of cherry sucrets... pretty sweet..

Medium body with a medium carbonation... too thick and not enough carbonation IMO.

750ml bottle shared by Dyan. Thanks.

Hazy cherry red with brown highlights. Pours without much of a head, only a lasting collar.

The aroma is fairly sweet, reminiscent of cherry preserves and cough syrup. It's also strangely mineral, metallic and medicinal.

Decent cherry flavors up front, but the mid-palate is odd; medicinal and metallic (iron), almost vegetal. There's a little vinegar, light acidic sourness, not particularly sweet or sour, and marred by some off flavors. Light finish, faintly oaky and medicinal. I was really excited to try this, but it's really not very good. Meh.

Deep reddish pink garnet. Light candy pink head, insanely sticky, just anywhere a bit of glass is free, this head will go and grab a seat forever. Aroma shouts cherry over every montreal’s roof. Deep honey, battered cream lactic acidity. Sweet meringous, funky, cheesy, leafy. Multi-dimensional aroma just like I enjoy them, but the focus is really funky dessert oriented. Rather sweet palate, more than I expected anyway with just a touch of lactic acid, smooth with clover and leaves notes. Light and easy to drink. RIdiculously seductive mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, full body, a maze of softness.

2012 bottle.

Pours a bright dark pink/light red color with a big pink head that leaves a decent amount of lacing on the glass.

Aromas begin super sweet and cherry forward. Really juicy and almost medicinal with some lesser lactic notes, mild acetic acid and little-to-no funkiness.

The tastes begin super super sweet and cherry forward as the aromas were leading on. The flavor is almsot unpalateable because of the sweetness and medicinal cherry flavors which dominate this brew. This brew is just like barley carbonated light aritficial cherry juice.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Finish is super sweet, almost cloying and weighs on the palate.

Overall this bottle is way way too young and needs like 3 years probably for the sweetness mellow with the lambic yeasts to possibly develop into a palatable beer. I am normally not a fan of Krieks but I can appreciate a good one, and everyone else in attendance agreed, this is not in a good state currently, unless you like cherry juice.

From the bottle at In De Verzekering Tegen De Grote Dorst during last week's Belgium trip. Reviewed from notes.

Served in a Girardin fat-bottomed tulip.

Poured a nice bright red with a small pink head and a collar thorughout.

The nose brought some semi-tart cherry and a bit of sweetness. Flavor was tart cherry with some sweetness and mild acidity. Restrained funk there as well.

Light body and dry finish with a bit of acidity.

biegaman brought this back from his trip to belgium and was kind enough to share this rare treat. thanks a bunch jan!

37.5cl bottle, corked and caged.

pours pinky red with a big pink head. the huge fluffy head drops slowly and leaves lots of chunky lace behind.

aroma is nice. big sour acidic nose that almost burns if you inhale too deeply. funky. bit of horse blanked. lots of earthy character. bit of lemon and orange. sour cherry. date. bit of soapy character - bubble bath or cleanser?

taste is good. sour cherry. bit of spice - nutmeg, cinnamon. spiced cherry cake? cake and bready malt. earthy funk. horse blanket. bit of old leather. light sweetness hiding in the background. vanilla. light acidity. lemon.

mouthfeel is nice. very clingy mouthfeel. medium body with a fairly dry finish.

drinkability is ok. well balanced. not overly sweet. the aroma was ok, but the taste is quite nice.

Appearance: blood red color, slightly hazy, peachy colored foam, quite a huge and spongey layer develops on a moderately hard pour, lacy

Aroma: slight yoghurty tang, quite fruity (but not necessarily discernible as cherries), wheat, very faint twinge of lambic quality, touch of diacetyl

Flavor: tart cherry-like fruitiness with a background cherry-pit bitterness, cork a bit musty, a twinge too sweet, cherry extract, finishes sweet/tart with a residual bitterness

Mouthfeel: medium body, fine carbonation, a bit slick feeling

Overall Impression: Almost like a kriekenbier. I don't get a lot of lambic character, per say. Not like Cantillon Kriek with a year of age on it. It's also a bit full-bodied for a kriek.

Red in color with a white-pink head. Nice cherry aroma, lots of cherry skin, a bit of cherry pie and spice notes. Oak, moderate tartness, and a light but musty funkiness. The flavor is only lightly tart and not as funky as the gueuze. Plenty of cherry pie and cherry skin. Some grass and musty funk. Not bad, but the gueuze or Kriekenlambik are both better.

Another thanks to Onslow. I love the Geuze, so lets see how this goes.

A: Pours a reddish/pink color. A one finger light pink head forms quickly, and recedes to nothing. Light lace.
S: Buttery malt up front. Sweet malt, and some cherries come on through after a bit. Lightly acidic.
T: Buttery malt and way to sweet. Just a hint of cherries. No tartness or acidic qualities at all.
M/D: A medium body that is under carbonated. This needs to be much cleaner and dryer. Way to sweet and not something I care to come back to.

IMO this is lacking in just about everything that I like in a true Lambic. Way to sweet, and no earthy, funky, sourness. There are much better examples of the style.

Pours light hazy red-brown with rocky off-white heat that dissipates to dense ring that keeps till end of the glass. Some downsliding lacing.

Aroma is light acidic earthy sweet with some cherry in the first moments, but it could not be detected later so easlily. Taste is light sourish and mildly acidic sweet cherry with very dry finish. Mouthfeel is medium with quite high carbonation.

Overall, not bad, but I would have expected it to be just slightly more sour. Then it would be perfect.

What happened here? I found it hard to believe that a kriek based on the 1882 could be bad, but so it is. Shared with a few guys the other day.

Clear cherry red thin white head poor retention and thin lace. Nose is lots of cherry, very fruity with lots of pie filling. Despite it, though, it does smell rather muted and maybe even artificial. Not very gueuze like, though there is a low level of funk and some lemons. Very cherry pie-like. Palate opens moderately sour with lactic and sour cherry. No acetic character is discernible and the lemon sourness is low. Rather dull. No funk. Moderately oaky. Some vanilla. Clean sour cheery. Drying finish with cherry. Light body low carbonation. Decent but poor.

A - Pours a murky cherry red with a half inch of frothy pink head. This recedes to a fingers worth and sits quite happily. Plenty of small bubbles of carbonation.

S - Sweet cherries, funk, sherbert, a little sourness.

T - A fizzy cherry flavour at first, which then becomes sour for a short time, before sweetness come to the fore. Dry/Sweet finish.

M - Light body and medium-high carbonation.

D - Above average, but there are certainly better examples of the style. Too sweet for my tastes.

As with the Gueuze, often the label states "Girardin Kriek 1882", but unlike the Gueuze this however is only available in one form - just filtered. A nice Kriek and not offensive but a tad too sweet for my liking. Has very strong lambic characteristics and the sourness of cherries compliment the dry acidic base beer. But there are better, less sweeter versions in my opinion. Good introduction though to the much better, more traditional but extremely rare Girardin Kriekenlambic.

The colour is shady red-brown; the head is first enormous, but it sinks down into a three finger thick head with a fine crater. It might be clear if poured in another way, I have to experiment some more.

The smell is dry and a bit sour, not as sweet as I had expected. In fact, it reminds me a bit of some kind of red wine, but it is kind of short and my nose is fading the scents in a strange way. Not much of any cherries either.

The taste is more rewarding but the notes of a dry red wine are still there; there are some sour notes and a dry flavour of cherry stones, fresh sweet white heart cherries and maybe some cherry-flavoured marzipan. Everything is very well balanced, but the taste seems to lack some depth. A mild sourness dominates the aftertaste, balanced with an almost creamy cherry-jam flavour and that red wine flavour.

The carbonation is relatively mild with microscopic bubbles that create some foam in the mouth.

This beer is very well balanced with a very discreet cherry-taste. It is fine. But I prefer some more sweetness and fruit flavour in beer of this style.

Thanks for bringing this back biegaman, you always take care of us.

Pours a cloudy red/orange, pinkish head, lots of lace, settles to a thin layer. Smell is chlorine/acidic, cherries, some funk/sourness, very pungent. Taste is sweet, cherries, sour/acidic middle, more cherries, spice, bread, some caramel, not bad. Mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with medium to high carbonation. Not bad, but the chemical aroma bothered me a little. Thanks again Jan!

A - Ruby body with a fluffy pink head.

S - Very complex aroma of vanilla frosting, cherry cake/donut, and slight funk.

T - Sour apples/citrus with dusty horseblanket funk up front. As moves across the palate, cherries and vanilla take over. Lots of cherries/sweetness in the finish. Finishes clean and dry.

M - Creamy rich body, medium carbonation.

D - One of the better beers of the night. Would definitely try this one again.
