Pours ruby-tinted copper with a pink-tinged head.
Nose shows authentic raspberries with a little funk in the background.
Flavours focus on sweet raspberry jam at first followed by a pronounce, balancing bitterness. Perhaps just a little on the sweet side overall.
Nice moderately high carbonation works well.

From: Etre Gourmet, Beauvechain, BE
Date: Cork says "2013," assuming bottled early 2013
Glass: Girardin degustation glass

Girardin's Framboise is a pleasantly fruity, lightly tart raspberry lambic that exhibits pleasant aromas and flavors, but lacks the significant complexity found in Cantillon's take on this style. While immediately reminding one of raspberries, the beer is missing that bracing acidity that Cantillon's contains, as well as the complex other secondary metabolites that the wild yeast from that brewery instills into the beers. It might be interesting to age a bottle of this for a few years and see how its attendant microfauna develops within the bottle.

Pours a 1cm tall head of light pink colored foam, made up of small-sized bubbles, yielding a fairly frothy appearance. Retention is average, the head lasting for about one minute, eventually fading to a thick, sudsy ring around the perimeter of the glass and a small pinwheel shape of foam atop the body of the beer. Lacing is modest, with a sparse scattering of small dots and blotches clinging to the walls of the glass. Body is a dark, burnt red color, with light bringing out brighter orange-brown-red hues throughout. Carbonation visible through the slightly hazy body, numerous and fairly active.

Aroma of strongly fruity, fresh raspberries, jam-like and sweet, with light hints of Brettanomyces-influenced mustiness and composting hay. Delicious, but not particularly sour.

Overall flavor is of strongly fruity, fresh raspberries, light tartness, and a very light basement-like mustiness. Front of palate tastes sweet raspberries, lightly tart raspberries, and slight hints of Brettanomyces-like composting hay and mustiness. Mid-palate of mildly tart raspberries, fresh and fruity, jam-like raspberries, and a bit of light Brettanomyces-induced basement mustiness. Back of palate tastes moderately tart raspberries with background of fresh raspberry sweetness and a bit of light basement mustiness. Long-lingering aftertaste of mildly tart raspberries, raspberry jam and basement mustiness.

Beer is medium-light in body, with carbonation of medium intensity, resulting in a lightly fizzy at first, then crisp and smooth mouthfeel with a bit of foaminess at the outset. The result is generally pleasant for the fruitiness of this beer, and is within a reasonable range for the style. Closes quite dry, with light stickiness clinging to the palate and lips.

Bottle 375 ml. Clear red pour with pink head. Aroma is straight up raspberry jam, blueberries and flowers. Light tartness, fruits come up as raspberries and cherries. Some floral hops and caramel malts. Probably the best sweetened fruit lambic I’ve had.

Bottle at Délices & Caprices

The beer has a clear red body and a pink head that sticks around for the two minutes it took to drink my glass and leaves lacing.

Holy shiz there is a big sweet raspberry aroma. Not much to it but very enticing.

There is a slight tartness to it. It's much more of a sweeter raspberry taste. Light funk notes.

Nice and bubbly medium body. Gets a little drying.

This seems to me like what Lindemans would taste like if it was actually good. It's on the sweeter side with some tartness. Not much complexity.

375ml bottle into Lost Abbey stemware. Bottle from Tim, thanks!

A: Dark maroon with a ruby hue. Short-lived frothy off-white head. Scattered lacing. Nice color.

S: Strong jammy raspberry aroma with a sugary sweetness. There's a little oak in there and a subtle earthiness, but the focus is really on the sweet raspberry jam aspect.

T: Expressive sweet raspberry jam flavor with subtle earth and leather tones. Mild tartness with an effusive lactic presence, some citric acidity up front, and a mild acetic bight throughout. The beer finishes with oak, tannins, and a piquant raspberry flourish that lingers.

M: Upper low to lower medium body. Dry, sticky mouthfeel and lightly tannic.

Overall: Much more fruit beer than lambic, so don't expect 1882 black label with raspberries. A nice beer, though I was hoping for more complexity from the base lambic.

375ml bottle into a Girardin goblet at Moeder Lambic St. Gilles.

A: Deep scarlet, clear body, and a voluminous, persistent pink head. Great lace. Fantastic.

S: Huge, ripe, tart raspberry. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing else required.

T: Raspberries dominate throughout, starting out juicy and getting more bitter and seedy toward the end. Some light, grassy funk joins in as well. Very tasty, but a little weak in the end.

M: Creamy, lively, and a touch thin. Pretty good.

O: While I preferred the Kriek 1882, this was another fine fruit Lambic from Girardin. I'm rather puzzled by the relatively low overall scores this beer has gotten - I have a feeling if the label said "Cantillon" instead of "Girardin" it would rate significantly higher, as I think it's every bit as good as some bottles of Rose de Gambrinus I've had (granted, when that beer is at its best it's stunning, but only one out of 4 bottles I've had of it has blown me away). Anyway, tasty Framboise.

Cheers!

This beer has the most important element in it, which isn't a chapter in this kind of reviews: drinkability. That's why I could buy it more often if I will find it.

The looks are great. The head is very nice, so I don't understand people who say it isn't much.

But except drinkable, does it offer more? I'm afraid not. The smell has some raspberry, but quite tiny. Very little funk. The taste isn't too sour, nor too sweet, but...too thin. Almost watery.

Combined with some overcarbonation my conclusion is that this is a drinkable beer, but not very impressive.

From the bottle at In De Verzekering Tegen De Grote Dorst during last week's Belgium trip. Reviewed from notes.

Served in a Girardin stemmed flute-like glass.

Poured pink-red. Mostly red with a pinkish tint to it. Short head and a bit of lacing.

Nose brought lots of fresh raspberry, though there was a faint bit of a medicinal character to it in the background, and this came through much more in the flavor, though still didn't overwhelm the beer. Faint must and a bit of acidity after a light body.

pours a deep pink and light ruby. light pinkish head with some light retention.

mainly fresh raspberry on the nose. a light sweetness.

very raspberry dominated. not much else. a very slight tartness but not much. although this is fairly one dimensional, the raspberry is quite good. not overpowering in any way. there is a faint hint of dry oak around the finish.

a mild tingle from the carbonation. sweetness across the mouth. dry finish.

this is good, not really sour at all, but good. id drink this again for sure.
