I visited this craft beer bar/pizza pub when I worked in Decatur for the Ursala Beck Men's Pro Tennis Tournament. We saw a few people eating pizza from Donnies (from a Italian branded box) so decided to check it out.

The first time I came here, I waited at the bar and enjoyed a beer while waiting for my pizza to come out. Tons of art and color made this place very urban and hippie influenced. Both the patio and inside also had beer signage and sayings to remind you that their place was cool.

Two things I noticed off the bat, they were proud to serve and promote craft beer and they could make a pizza anyway you liked it. Both of these made my decision that this place was worth checking out twice in the 6 days I was in Decatur. Their service was made up of 3 bartenders/beer maids, a manager, and two guys making the food in the back. All friendly and connected with immediately.

Their beer selection was above including Schlafly, Stone, SmuttyNose, Dark Horse, North Coast, Sierra Nevada, Unibroue, and many others I can't remember. They had flights available (picking 4 from the 6 available on tap). All in all, I think 16-18 bottles were available.

Enjoyed the Sicilian the first time around and then created my own with a fellow colleague including Pepperoni, Garlic, and Onion. Both were thin crust and very good! Wish I would have had the Deep Dish for one of these...

A fun place thats centered around good beer and good pizza. Decatur definitely needed one of these in their city! Keep it up Donnies!

I visited this place on my first day in Decatur. Pretty much the only option for good beer on tap, quality pizza and coolness in this tumbleweed town.

Donnie's is right next to Millikin University, in a nice block of funky businesses and restaurants that is a world away from the general abandonment and depression of Decatur.

The interior looks industrial and artsy, with a bike hanging from the ceiling, exposed brick walls, art from local artists for sale and a nice makeshift, DIY-vibe.

Donnie's got a rather small bar and lots of tables around it, plus a patio if the weather is nice. Service here is good and efficient, with good-looking gals and pals (a plus in this town of eminently ugly folks). Sometimes, though, they are understaffed, and then service suffers. But I'm never unhappy here.

As for beer, they have six taps and some twenty-two bottles. On tap, Old Rasputin, Two Brothers Domaine DuPage, Goose Island 312, Capital Island Wheat, Rogue Dead Guy and PBR. I've also seen Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA, Left Hand Sawtooth and Magic Hat. Nothing too exciting, but alright.

The bottle menu is divided in full/medium/light, with good options such as Stone Arrogant Bastard, New Holland Dragon's Milk, Stone Sublimely, Two Brothers, Celis, New Belgium... all priced at just barely above retail price ($8.50 for a bomber of Stone Sublimely is quite a steal).

The problem is the quality of the taps. Both my Rasputin and the wife's Two Brothers Domaine were not fresh, a little flat and just old. I understand most folks in D-Tur will not drink these beers, but still... I would run a special or something to ensure freshness and rotation.

(In later visits the taps have been better and fresher, maybe it is a pressure issue or something)

Food is mostly pizza, and very good at that. Super thin crust, which we love (coming from New York!) and great taste, but the toppings could be more imaginative. Some goat cheese or feta, maybe wild mushrooms or shallots... some cool stuff is needed to top these otherwise wonderful pizzas.

They have live-band night, open-mic night and other events, so it should always be fun in here.

Other than the old taps and somewhat-boring pizza toppings, Donnie's really is THE place for good tap beer and pizza in Decatur. I look forward to going back!
