Coming in a 330ml brown bottle, bottle-conditioned; bottled on 03/01/2014, served cool in a stemmed tulip-shaped sniffer.
A: extremely dark brown in colour, topped with a deep khaki frothy head and relatively mild carbonation.
S: the aroma upfront is bitter-sweet nutty, vanilla-ish chocolatey and some roasty hints of dark malts, along with aromatic apples, prune-ish sour fruitiness and random hints at earthy hops.
T: soothing on the palate, the foretaste is sour-sweet dark stone-fruity against a backdrop of deep and rich dark malts with a good body plus lingering burned-walnutty aroma; ensued by a little salty hint of yeasts, musk, leather, and spice, turning increasingly herbal-chewy with a stimulating feel of hop bitterness, leaving aroma as of bitter chocolates and cocoa to linger in the long finish.
M&O: softly carbonated and smooth on the palate, the bottle-conditioning comes at a next-to-ideal level, rendering a soothing mouthfeel on top of the robust body and rich flavour profile. This example of export stout is a harmonious one, not that astringent on the acidity and not very bitter on the hops or roast malts either. Due to the balance reached at the end of each sip b/w roastiness, fruitiness and bitterness, against well-hidden alcohol, I find this a highly drinkable rich stout.
