Rich cranberry red colour. Aromas of sticky sweet raspberry jam and light musky hops. Tastes heavy and sweet, jammy raspberry and juicy.

Hazy ruby color with slightly pink head. Aroma is rye bread with raspberry marmalade. Taste follows tart with rye and intense natural raspberry flavor. Light, effervescent body, really dry on the aftertaste. I like this one quite a lot. Spicy, fruity and tart.

Pours red-tinged light brown with a fading head.
Nose shows raspberry jam, sweet bready malt and little else.
Very sour flavours, no sign of sweetness. Overt raspberry with a faint bready note in the background again.

11.2 ounce bottle, label says bottled on 17JUN15, best before 17JUN17. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a slightly hazy reddish/brown color with maybe a quarter inch off-white head that went away quickly. Pretty much no lacing at all. The brew smells like raspberry syrup and bready/sweet malt, aroma just seems too artificial and sweet, just not real appealing. Luckily, there's some tartness in the taste. There's tart and sweet raspberry, lemon peel, and some wheat/bready malt flavors. Nice mix with the sweet and tartness, at first I didn't expect much out of this after smelling it, but it tastes a lot better than I thought. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, with low/moderate carbonation. Other than the taste, there wasn't much about this brew I cared for. Not that it was bad, just not memorable. With that being said, it was nice to try once.

11.2 ounce bottle, bottled 17JUN15, best by 17JUN17. The bottle says "Drink Fresh" but they give a two year window, so I guess the fact that this is a year old shouldn't matter.

I like Berlinerweisses, I like Rye beers, and I often (not always) like fruit beers, so this one should work for me.

The appearance is about what you'd expect: dark ruby red, but there isn't much of a head.

I got a good combination of raspberry and bready malts. I didn't get the typical rye spiciness that I expected, so I'd call the rye influence subtle at most. The beer has a little more body and a fuller taste than the usual Berlinerweiss, and maybe that's where the rye is contributing.

It's tart, but it's not super tart. I think the tartness is just right, a little zing, without being mouth puckering.

Overall, a pretty interesting variation on Berliner weiss beers, and well worth a try.

A: Pours a hazy almost opaque deep reddish brown in color with moderate to heavy amounts of active visible carbonation and faint ruby red highlights. The beer has a finger tall fizzy foamy dark beige head that reduces to a medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of slightly sweet raspberries over the top of tart wheat.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of tart wheat with light to moderate flavors of slightly sweet + tart raspberries. There is a light hint of lemon citrus in the background as well. Minimal amounts of bitterness but a lingering tartness in the finish.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of acidic prickliness.

O: Very nice and refreshing enjoyable Berliner... Reminds of having a Berliner in Berlin with the red syrup. Nice contrast of the sweetness of the raspberries and the tart Berliner weisse.

As the natural fruit tendencies of Berlinerweiss invite additional fruit decoration, the focus on fructose can easily distract from the natural earth, spice and pungent character of rye ale.

Butxton's norther German sour ale unleashes the lacto-tart character onto a bed of wheat, bread and raspberry for a uniquely tart taste. Sure, the raspberries have their hayday with a strong ruby hue and pinkish swath of foam, and that character carries through a tangy berry scent and onto a semisweet fruit and malt palate. But its the sourness that soon steels the show.

As the sweetness of fruit and malt relax, the acidic nature of the beer takes hold with whimsical notions of crabapple, lime, dried lemon, tangy orange, sour red grape and a mild hint of balsamic. As the clean lactic tartness pangs away at the middle, a faint drift of burlap and must infultrates the flavor and floats just above the tongue.

Tangy white and rose wine decorate the beer's finish as the deciedly lemon-laced beer carries a medium-light texture with hints of peppercorn, pectin and suggestive vinegar.
