500 ml bottle conditioned, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.5%. Black colour, moderate tan head. Lovely aroma of citrussy hops, on a background of moderately roasted malts, hints of dark chocolate. The medium dry flavour has again citrussy hops, blended with distinct roasted malts, notes of strong coffee, dark bitter chocolate and resin. The contradictory "Black IPA" style is beginning to grow on me, and this one is a fine specimen.

Can from Tesco. Dark brown, small head fades to ring. Aroma is nutty, sweet, malty. Taste brings some roasty notes and mild bitterness. Mellow for a black IPA

Heavy ruby black with creamy tan foam. 4
Charcoal, dank, some tartness, a green vegetal thing, and maybe molasses. 3.75
Ash, Marmite and treacle, then resin, wisps of grilled pineapple, plenty of pine sap and grass clipping. Cocoa and fondant as it opens. 3.75
Vague dried orange rind and ong bitter linger.
Creamy, medium, round. 4

Bottled Apr 26. 17 - four months old nearly to the day. I gotta think that, even at this not-quite-old phase, age is denting the hops, because I’m getting none of the reported citrus, just a lot of dank and greenery. Witness, too, that the BBD is only 8 months from bottling, so this is halfway dead by that measure - maybe even a touch of brown paper in there somewhere. RB says Top 50 BIPA; this ain’t that. As it is, it plays like a very English imperial stout, with lots of dark fruit and flinty mineral underneath. Flexes some muscle, but off its best. 3.75

L - pitch black with a nice head

S - Smells like a classic IPA with grapefruit, melon, and some chocolate and licorice notes

T - Less exciting than the smell, mostly roasted, some citrus presence

M - Very juicy and velvety

O - Nice black IPA but I think if I had it a bit fresher it would have been better

330ml bottle in Harrild & Sons, London (£5.50):
This one was a really excellent black IPA, quite possibly one of the best that I've tried of the style to date (I'm not 100% sure but it is certainly up there anyway). Juicy, flavoursome & really refreshing to drink, this one was an excellent tasting beer that went down in no time at all. After finishing the majority of the bottle I realised the beer had been bottles just over one year ago but this definitely didn't seem to have a negative impact on the taste, the beer was superb & it's one I'll be hoping to pick up again now.

330ml bottle bought from Lighthouse Wines, Jordanstown

Poured a deep black colour. Light tan head poured big, thick and foamy and faded slowly to good thickish covering... lots of sticky lacing most of the way down the glass...

Aroma - Juicy fruits (grapefruit, pears, lemons) followed by lots of earthy and roasted malts, light chocolate and coffee notes, burnt bread, faint brown sugar traces, piney and citrus hopiness, nutty, some rubberiness, honey, cut wet grass / hay...

Taste - Piney, grassy and citrus hop bitterness mixed with lots of roasted chocolate malts, some tart fruits (grapefruits and lime), coffee, nice caramel malts and notes of floral honey, some brown sugar hints, quite herbal, some liquorice, quite earthy

M&D - Fairly smooth with a little oiliness in the background then some sharpness comes through... full bodied... incredibly drinkable considering it is 7.5 percent

Overall - An excellent black IPA and another fine brew from Buxton... recommended..
