A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2013, so it's well out of date. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Hopefully still in good condition. The label calls it a classic stout.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A dark reddish-brown hue that appears pitch black in the glass. Yields a small head of frothy beige foam that hangs aorund for a few minutes before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of intense roasted malt with hints of coffee, burnt grain, molasses, mild cocoa, faint caramel, a twinge of smokiness and earthy yeast. Slightly sweet and satisfyingly rich - very nice.

Tastes of roasted malt with a powerful bitter finish. Notes of roasted coffee, burnt grain, dark malt, molasses, subtle cocoa, earthy yeast, faint smoke and stewed leaves. A whisper of sourness in the background. Well-attenuated, followed by a strident, malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly tingly, with soft carbonation and a rather insubstantial body for the style. Pretty astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter roasted malt, coffee and earthy yeast.

Rather nice - perhaps a bit past its best but still good. Uninspired looks; shame the head doesn't hang around. The aroma and flavour are rich and roasty - plenty of dark malt and coffee notes in evidence. So-so body, could be a shade thicker. A solid brew that is proably marred by being kept too long - serves me right for hiding beers away. Goes down nicely; if you like stouts then this is a brew for you. Worth sampling if you come across it. (1,568 characters)

This stout ale pours a deep brown-tinted black, with a thick creamy latte head. Aromas of burnt roast coffee, malty molasses, prunes, and a hint of smoke. It is gently sweet & sour, with a moderate bitterness.

Had at an tasting evening with friends, we went through the entire range of buxtons (296 characters)
