October 2010: 500 ml brown glass bottle with tear-off cap, as Shumensko Premium Beer. ABV is 4.6%. A gift, BB date seems to be 13.12.08. Extremely pale yellow colour, huge white head. Sweetish aroma with strong "chemical" notes, vile stuff. Soft mouthfeel. Bland and boring flavour with just a hint of sweetness and minimal hops, but not totally undrinkable.

Golden filtered with no real head, and little carbonation.
Smells of malt and wet dog.
Tastes of malt, cardboard, and thats about it.
Light body with moderate carbonation.
I got this in Bulgaria, and am drinking it in California, April 27th, 2019.

A: The beer is crystal clear deep yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high bright white head that died down, leaving a thin patch of bubbles that covered about three quarters of the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of pilsner malts and corn adjuncts are present in the nose along with faint hints of sweetness.
T: The taste follows the smell has has flavors of corn and pilsner malts with a slight amount of bitterness from the underlying hops.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and very clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is also a slight amount of smoothness.
O: This beer is a cut above others in the style as it doesn't have any "off" or skunky flavors.

Reviewed from notes taken in Summer 2014.
Served on-draught into a .5L glass at a bar in Sofia, Bulgaria. Expectations are average going in.
HEAD: Half a finger in height. White in colour. Okay thickness. Okay creaminess. Not much frothiness. Horrid (~20 second) retention. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Clear clean yellow body colour. No yeast/lees or sediment are/is visible within. Has average vibrance. Appears filtered.
Looks adequately carbonated, if not overcarbonated. Not a unique or special appearance for a beer in this style. Pretty standard across the board.
AROMA: Pilsner malts, clean 6-row barley, a faint hint of floral hop character, generic malt sweetness. No off-notes are detectable, nor are any overt yeasty aromatics or booze.
A pleasant aroma of average intensity. Largely inexpressive, but that's not atypical given the style.
TASTE: Pilsner malts, clean 6-row barley, generic malty sweetness. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.
Unremarkable overall, with a tired build, no yeasty esters, no interesting hop flavour, etc. To its credit, it suffers from no off-flavours.
Not well balanced in spite of its simplicity. I do like it generally, but it won't impress discerning drinkers. Not intricate, subtle, or naunced in its flat execution. Boring but passable.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, crisp, and fairly refreshing for what it is. Suits the taste okay. A bit overcarbonated, which reduces it drinkability.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.
OVERALL: Not bad for macroswill lager by European standards, and far from the worst I've had. In fact, it's a bit above average within the category. Drinkable and decent. One could do far worse for the price. If we're being fair, this isn't a bad casual table beer for mindlessly pairing with spicy food or the like. You get what you expect and maybe a little more when you order Shumensko.

Viva Bulgaria! BBD 03.06.14
Pours a pale gold with a lasting thin film across the surface, minimal spotty lacing.
Smells like cooked grains and corn, wasted nights swilling Samson at Johnnies.
Taste is pretty bland and inoffensive, weak and insipid. Cooked grain, dull taste. Bleh.
Don't waste your time, even though the bottle has a wacky embossed coat of arms on it. Industrial lager is the same in any country sadly enough.
