Viva Bulgaria! BBD 03.06.14

Pours a pale gold with a lasting thin film across the surface, minimal spotty lacing.

Smells like cooked grains and corn, wasted nights swilling Samson at Johnnies.

Taste is pretty bland and inoffensive, weak and insipid. Cooked grain, dull taste. Bleh.
Don't waste your time, even though the bottle has a wacky embossed coat of arms on it. Industrial lager is the same in any country sadly enough.

Yellow, fizzy appearance. Creamy solid and abundant white foam.
Nothing to report for the smell. Some malt, not too fresh hop, a bit of metallic.
Banal and uninteresting in the taste, too. Corn, not too fresh and inviting.
Same for the aftertaste. Banal.
Avoidable.

360ml embossed bottle.

It pours a clear gold with a foamy white head.

The smell is sweeter and breadier than usual, slight grassy hops.

Flavor is typical EPL. I guess it has a bit more character than most. It has a mild soapiness, some mild bitterness, herbalness, a nice sweetness, and some fruity notes. Reminiscent of a czech pils melded with a polish lager.

T: sweet, some malts, hint of metal, overall very bland

M: very thin, carbonation is pretty good,

O: really not a good beer, but nothing really disturbing about it either

Smell: Sweet malts and some hints of grain, bit metallic.
Taste: Sweet malts honey and grain, this beer is too sweet for the style. No hops at all. No bite, nothing
Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation and thin body
Overall: Sweet lager-water

Appearance: Straw golden. Decent foam. Lacing is definitely above average. Carbonation leaves a bit to be desired. I just tried Karlovacko from Croatia, which looks very similar.

Smell: A decent yeastiness to this. Sweet honey or caramel malt is definitely present. Pretty subtle and refreshing.

Taste/Mouthfeel: The taste and feel confuse me a bit. There's a sourdough bread taste initially. It's very faint, that's for sure. Shumensko finishes with a stale mineral or metallic flavor that sometimes comes across way to strong. I'm not sure if it's the water or something with the brewing. Mouthfeel alternates between sticky and sugary and dry and metallic.

Drinkability: Nothing terribly unpleasant, but nothing particularly enticing.

Overall: I would definitely pick more widely available beers over this.

Poured into a tall pilsner glass from the 500mL can.

A: The beer is a pale gold, typical of euro pales. The head is nice and fluffy, pure white with good retention at 2.5 fingers.

S: Sweet character in the nose with a touch of grain. Slight metallic twang. Maybe a touch of canned corn. A bit of floral hop, but then covered up again by sweet character.

T: Again somewhat sweet with some corn and a bit of a sour end. Finish is light with more sweetness, like wet white bread or something. Not very much bitterness to be found in this one.

F: Filmy and a bit watery. Carbonation prickles for a bit then fizzles out quickly.

D: I live very near Shumen, the city that this beer is made for. As such, this is the go to beer for most of the locals. It's not a bad way to end a hot day with friends.

I've drank plenty of this stuff, and would put it ahead of most macros. However, there are better Bulgarian beers.

Brought from Sofia to the UK by a Bulgarian colleague. Coming in a 360ml engraved brown glass, BB 04/09, served chilled in a straight pint glass.

A: pours a bright straw hue with abundant fizziness at play, topped with a white puffy foam that manages to last very well.
S: lightly doughy sourness, floral hops, faintly sweet and clean grainy lager malts - all packed in a single sniff, albeit not complex.
T: initially the flavour comes rather light in lager malts with bitter-sweet graininess (a touch of dried corns), then a mysteriously savoury-sweet touch with more floral bitter hops expand in the aftertaste, followed by a very faint plastic and semi-dry finish.
M&D: light-bodied, properly carbonated, but slightly thin (even a bit watery) in the finishing touch... compared with the can version that I tried 6 months ago, this bottle version tastes much better in terms of the clean palate, balanced profile, and a pleasant addition of light bitterness of hops. Lots of thanks go to Lily my colleague!
