Notes/Commercial Description:
5 Grass is a refreshing yet substantial beer that is pale in color and nicely hoppy. With this beer, we wanted to invoke the brisk, clean aroma of the desert. The recipe makes use of three unique hop varieties as well as some carefully chosen herbs and spices - juniper, sage, and Tasmanian pepperberry, among others - to give a beautiful outdoorsy scent. With it’s smooth clean malt flavors and a unique, complex nose, 5 Grass is like a refreshing walk in the wide open spaces.

Pour is light brown, orange hue. Light, almost white head. Nice lacing develops.

Nose is rather sharp - sage jumps right out. Reading on the label there was sage surprised me, the nose confirms it's presence. Decent entry gives way to a grassy flavor that quickly becomes dominated by the spices. Yes it is floral, but the sage takes over way too much. I'm struggling with this beer - I remember a pizza beer from several years ago contract brewed at Sprecher. I found that more appealing because I like oregano and basil. Sage in a lighter beer - just too much. Somewhere, a german brewer is rolling over in his grave.

I got a hint of the juniper - would prefer more of that and tone down the sage.

in Aztec mythology 5 grass ( Macuilmalinalli) is one of the 5 gods of excess(Ahuiateteo) it reminds us that all living things form a grand community that has taught us to do our part as thoughtful caring stewards and good neighbors too all life.

A: Dark in color compared to any other pale ale, almost could compare it too a brown ale. The cup seems to be rather dull so i want to say may have allot of malt or external ingredients in that manor. still see through.

S: First impression i must say i thought it was cough syrup, after my second attempt tho i had to have gotten allot of malt or licorice. does not seem to be very carbonated.

T: Defiantly not as bad as it smells, but i want to say if your not a fan of licorice then you might not be a fan of this beer. overall tho i would say it would fit it style very well with a dominating flavor a licorice.

M: sharp and hoppy in the mouth. not one that you could just let sit and move around in there. One might say that it could just be overwhelmed with sweetness but i tend to think it has a sticky aroma too it, leaving a trail after taste. Don't know if it would be one i would buy on the regular.

(Served in a stemmed strange)
A- The reddish-brown body has a slightly dense hazy and a lumpy bubbly beige head.

S- A patchouli hint turns to medicinal sage as it opens up.

T- The sage and rosemary flavors are strong with a band-aid hint and some herbal medicinal flavor lingers with a slight salty quality and some peppercorn spice.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a gentle fizz and no alcohol heat.

O- This beer reminds me of a ricola cough drop without the menthol. There is no malt flavor or hops to help cut all the sage and rosemary.

When pouring the beer from the bottle into a glass, I was alarmed. I have never seen an APA that was battery acid brown. Contradicting the laws of physics, the head was largely white. The aroma was mediciny in a manner that reminded me of the stuff I consumed when I had the flu. Obviously, the medicine hints came from the juniper. I have had beer with juniper and liked it, so this could still be good. Potential is not always demonstrated. On the initial taste, I noticed hops. However, these were quickly cancelled by the potency of the juniper berries which gave the impression of Nyquil in my beer. The aftertaste was tart and dry, largely overwhelmed by the juniper berries.
