this was sold to me as a double wheat ale, and i get this. almost weizenbock type, without the lager yeast. its just crazy how big and thick this thing is, for what it is, and how low the abv is, and how clear and light it looks in the glass, a total surprise to me. looks like a pale ale or something, even lighter maybe, nice white head on it too and plenty of bubbles. the smell is wheat malt, just more of it than i am used to, almost like a wheatwine without the sweetness or the booze. it has that heft to it in the aroma, which still doesnt prepare me for the actual texture of this beer, which is like rubber cement (okay thats a stretch, but its very very dense beer, the lead of wheat beers or something). the flavor isnt bad, its really simple beer, even though i think it has some crazy ingredients. almonds and muscat grapes. neither one is too evident, the wheat owns them. im surprised to read others find it light in feel, even with all the carbonation i thought it was really heavy, protein rich, and fully textured like the wheat itself. overall i dont hate it, but like a lot of beers ive had from these guys, one glass was plenty. cool concept though, and i like that these guys are always doing something crazy and new.

Missionario is a dry, crisp, champagne-like wheat beer: tart, clean, and downright resplendent, with a quick, cutting effervescence that carries the complexities of this 5 Rabbit Spring 2013 seasonal throughout its course on the palate. Moreover, for an unfiltered wheat beer, Missionario flashes an extraordinarily clear—near transparent—silver-and-gold color, to pair with its light head and moderate retention. In general, this ale rings as golden as the bright gold grapes that adorn the label, and it really is an amazing expression of that range of color and flavor—and, likewise, an explosion of sophisticated muscat qualities, in a much more modern (and champagne-like) sensibility than Dogfish Head's differently-excellent Midas Touch. But like the latter, Missionario does have a distinct Old World ring—seeming more French, even, than Spanish, in its mission (and certainly more western Mediterranean than eastern).
The one note that is lacking is the "Aldrich" almonds, which impart very little to the overall bouquet, as far as I can detect—not nutty flavors, nor any sort of protein richness floating under the pleasing, nebulous wheat-borne tartness of this high-on-hybridity beer. But everything else is working: the surprisingly limpid wheat, the entirely coherent complement of the grapes, the bright-yet-pungent yeast flavors, the wafting nose—the only part that expresses any hint of almonds—and even the elegant, matte label-art all swirl into a wonderful waltz of success and competence. I like Gran Missionario, but I wish 5 Rabbit would bring this little brother back.

(Served in a tulip glass)
A- This beer pours a hazy pale lemon yellow body with a thin ring of big bubbles with some oily spots floating on top.
S- The musty grape skins aroma has a soft silage note to it. Soft but a bit interesting.
T- The slight taste of mead takes on more of a cider flavor with some wheat in the finish. There is a dry soda pop flavor in the finish with a hint of tartness fading quickly after each sip.
M- The light mouthfeel has a tangy fizz and no alcohol heat.
O- This is interesting with some nice clean cider qualities. I had hoped for much more based on the description bit it didn't have quite the wine/muscat flavor coming through.
