A: Pours a clear gold with a thick, pillowy white head that recedes very slowly, leaving considerable lacing in its wake.
S: Aromas of caramel, toffee, biscuits, crackers, lemon, moist earth, leather, heather, tobacco, and black tea are present on the nose.
T: Notes of lemon jelly, orange rind, juniper berry, heather, leather, moist earth, tobacco, black pepper, black tea, grass, and black currant are skillfully framed against a backdrop of caramel, toffee, cracker, biscuit, and brown butter flavors. The finish is flavorful and slick with notes of black tea, lemon, black pepper, leather, tobacco, caramel, and biscuit.
M: Medium in body and mildly slick, this ale is not nearly as resinous as many other popular American IPAs. Carbonation is active and crisp. This beer is very, very easy to drink for the style, but I prefer just a little more malt heft in my IPAs.
O: This is a very respectable IPA, and at first I was not sure what to make of it. Some of the flavors this beer presents are more akin, at least in my mind, to English IPAs, while others remind me that this is supposed to be an American IPA. Though it may straddle the fence between two styles as far as flavor goes, this is still a very approachable, flavorful ale, and in my opinion, it is refreshing to see a take on this style that does not resemble any of the citrus bombs that have come to dominate the market.
