This black beer was poured for me at Tap & Mallet in Rochester. This oatmeal stout beer was poured in a pint glass. It came with a thin dark head and aromas of chocolate cordials, and vanilla on the nose. My first sip is creamy and thick with flavors of chocolate, cream soda, and a hint of malt.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a pint glass.

A: Pours a pitch black hue with a 2-finger tan head that leaves a solid, persistent, thick, frothy lace.

S: Sweet roasted malts with hints of coffee and chocolate.

T: Smooth slightly sweet roasted malts and slightly hoppy.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Excellent stout! Very smooth and easily drinkable.

A: Dark and Beautiful, Black, the head was a bit small though.

S: Nice, fragrent

T: Decent, not too bold, malty

M: Full, but a little bitter.

O: A decent stout for the price.

I bought this at my local Trader Joe's and for the price and overall taste, I think I'll buy more.

A: A very dark brown pour with a milk chocolate head. Decent retention and good lacing.

S: Pretty simple, roasted malt with a bit of chocolate.

T: Lots of roasted malt (but not too much) and the smooth oatmeal with a bit of chocolate. A little bit milky like a borderline milk stout. Simple but great.

M: Super creamy and smooth, just like a proper oatmeal stout.

O: Great oatmeal stout. Not super complex or fancy, just a smooth, creamy, easy drinking stout. I could drink about 50 of these.

Near black color with a large three-finger, beige head. Plenty of streaky lace that I'd describe as a cross between spotty and ring-like.

Aroma: Creamy, mocha aroma, slightly chalky.

Thin bodied and above average carbonation starts off the taste. The flavor reminds me of iced coffee, both in taste and consistency. This is a weak stout, but it has the elements of a darker and drier dark beer.

A little on the lackluster side, no nose to speak of, thin weak head, that dissipates quickly, no lacing of the glass.Very unexiting brew.
Taste is decent but not exceptional, hints of chocolate and burnt oatmeal.

Surprizingly disappointing, since the ingredients are fully listed on the bottle and they should yeild an otherwise remarkable stout!

On-tap at Helm’s Alehouse.

A: Pours black with a great frothy light tan head that left wispy lacing down the glass.
S: Rich dark malts, dark chocolate, a touch of sweet caramel and a smoky and inviting kind of meaty campfire smell.
T: Follows the nose with notes of sweet dark roated malts, dark chocolates and a good light smoky finish.
M: Medium slicky body, low carbonation, thinnish mouth but not too watery.
O: Really solid oatmeal stout that isn’t the most complex, but doesn’t have any outrageous flaws.

Appearance. Pours a deep red-brown, almost black with a finger of tan head that lasts a little while but doesn't leave much for lacing.

Smell. Sweet roasty malts, chocolate and a bit of vanilla, a little metalic.

Taste. Sweet chocolate, roasty malt, caramel. Just a little grassy hops. Tastes pretty good.

Mouthfeel. Medium body, slightly higher than medium carbonation.

Overall. Bottom line is that this stuff tastes good. Could drink more than a couple pretty easily :-)

12oz Bottle

Appearance - The beer pours a black colour with an average size fizzy light brown coloured head. I can't see much carbonation due the darkness of the beer and there is some good lacing on the sides of the glass. The head lasted for 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Chocolate, malts, roasted coffee, smoke

Taste & Mouth - The beer has a high amount of carbonation and I can taste chocolate and roasted/burnt coffee mixed with malts and and a bit of a smokiness. The taste is really well balanced but the beer feels a little thin and watery which is surprising given it's alcohol content. It finishes with a chocolate/coffee slightly smokey aftertaste.

Overall – One of the better beers I've had from this brewer. I'd drink it again for sure. Only needs a little improvement in the mouth feel department.

Poured pitch black with an almond color head about 3/4 in that reduces to about 1/4 - 1/2 in with good lace.

Smell is of sweet malt and coffee notes... maybe some lagging hops but nothing real pronounced.

roasted malt to start and coffee flavor kicks in... smoothes out then you get a bit of hop bitterness almost floral but more on the piney side if that makes sense. very faint alcohol finish.
mouthfeel is ok could be a bit thicker for a stout but adequate.

Overall a good beer and decent stout that i might be inclined to try again.

This beer has all the makings of a great stout, looks good, smells good, tastes great.
EXCEPT that the taste dies immediately on my tongue. There is very little aftertaste to speak of, which is a shame because it is quite delicious right away, hints of chocolate, and a great 'oatmeal-ly' feel.
Another thing is that mine has very little carbonation, could use a better head....
Will try again anyway.

Pitch black with a small creamy tan head. No lacing.

Mild chocolate and roast. Quite underwhelming.

Roasty with a slightly herbal kick. Mild chocolate but nothing overpowering. I’m looking for a little more.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth and unassuming.

A decent though lightweight stout. There’s a bit of flavour here but it falls just a touch flat on the palate.

Very enjoyable dry stout.

Pours a dark brown almost black with big light tan head.

Rich malty aroma.

Flavor is very dry. A little bit of dark chocolate balanced with cream. Counter-balanced by some oatmeal. Lingering bitterness with some malt sweetness.

Medium mouthfeel.

(Bought in Manhattan, Kansas. Enjoyed at home in Oklahoma City)

Look: Black in color with a 1/4 inch head and ok retention

Smell: Believe it or not the first thing I smell is citrus hops then it is followed by hints of chocolate and caramel

Taste: Very subtle dark chocolate coffee and oatmeal notes up front and the backend has some bittering hops

Mouthfeel: A bit watery for a stout with a medium carbonation level and a slightly dry finish

Overall: Everything about this beer is just ok

A - A good, retentive head, opaque and very pleasant looking. I swear the lace was a slight orange color when poured.

S - Not too strong, but nice. Sweet, sugary aroma with a hint of chocolate and coffee.

T - A pretty nice, somewhat bitter taste. Chocolate, coffee and almond flavors, but not really as strong as I would like. It's pretty good, but I think it lacks creaminess. Not an oatmeal stout person though.

M - Bitter, but not bad. It's still lacking that full body feeling I'm craving.

O - Well, it's not expensive, if anything. For it's price, you could do a lot worse. I just can't see myself actively going out and getting a larger quantity. I think I'm just not an oatmeal stout person, so them's the brakes I suppose. Don't get me wrong, it's still good. I'd order at a bar if they had it cheap.

ich black, completely opaque liquid coming forward in front of me. Rich dark brown notes, with a good sized head of maybe an inch in height coming over the top of it. Nice settling left behind a thin layer and a good amount of side glass lace.

The aroma was your typical oatmeal stout, though a touch more bitter then what I was expecting. Nice notes of lactose, chocolate and vinous hops. Some light grain notes as well in the finish. Rich, though not terribly filling. Lots of burnt and roasted malt flavors in here. Not as sweet as the aroma would have led me to believe it would have been, still though very solid in both bitterness and malt profile. Light notes of chocolate floating around, but again nothing terribly too sweet, more or less just enough to give a slight hint and a nudge in the right direction.

A friend brought me this one from Four Winds in Pensacola. Love the label. Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass

Appearance: 1 finger head; brownish-black in color

Smell: Malts, coffee, toffee and chocolate

Taste: Same as smell. The trick to this stout is to let it warm up a bit. The warmer it got, the more tastes came through, especially the malts. I was wishing I'd served it at about 54 degrees and let the temps work up. It really complimented the baked sole I was having. My wife said it went well with her pizza.

Mouthfeel: medium

Overall: A really nice oatmeal stout. Drink it warm, like in the old country and appreciate the flavors.

12oz. bottle poured into new Gulden Draak tulip.

A: Black as one would expect. About a finger and a half tan head. Dissipates fairly quickly. No lacing to speak of.

S: Fairly light smell. Lots of roasted oats. Light roasted coffee.

T: Roasted oats. Little coffee. Very light chocolate. Pretty light on the taste also. Not bad at all, just VERY light.

M: Thin. Not much body at all. No creaminess.

O: Not impressed in any way. Maybe the OE 800 (8-Ball) of Oatmeal Stouts. For $1.49 I gave it a shot. Won't again tho. All together light in the ass.

This beer pours a dark brown nearly black color. The head is one inch of light tan foam that recedes slowly into a nice cap of lacing. The aroma has hints of roasted malt and cream, but it is very faint. The taste is similar to the aroma. That is to say there isn't much there. I understand that oatmeal stout is one of the lightest stout styles, but this beer is too light in both flavor and aroma even for an oatmeal stout. The mouthfeel is light bodied with a somewhat watery texture, and low carbonation. Overall, this is a bland beer that I will not drink again.

Tasted On: 07-12-2011
Freshness: Bottling date of 03-02-2011
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle
Glassware: Tulip pint
Purchased: Single from Midtown, Nashville

A: Black, opaque beer with a frothy tan head 3 fingers high. Good amount of lacing on the glass.

S: Rich and sweet aroma, with heavy emphasis on the roasted dark malts and chocolate.

T: Coffee and toasted malt flavors (dark and burnt), along with caramel and dark, bittersweet chocolate. The bitterness from the roasting is nicely balanced by the malty sweetness.

M: Creamy and smooth texture from the oatmeal makes this a very nice drinker. Carbonation is moderate and the body is rich and full. Aftertaste is of bittersweet chocolate and coffee.

O: Excellent and luxurious beer that seems to get better as it warms up. One of my favorite low alcohol stouts and a great way to end an evening.

Pours a kola hue with average carbonation that leaves behind little head or lacing, the smell is cocoa, oats, alcohol and spicy hops, the mouthfeel is light-medium bodied and has tastes of cocoa, bittersweet dark chocolate, bran and finished with a spicy, herbal hoppiness that counteracts the sweetness perfectly and overall even though ive had better this is still worth a taste as its very sessionable on a cold day like today.

Got this in a trade. Aroma is rich and strong, smoky with a firm molasses component and tones of coffee and miso. It pours a deep, opaque sable almost as black as an 8-ball with a thick, if not persistent, tan head. Smoky flavor has coffee, unsweet chocolate, nutty, and toffee tones with hints of molasses and caramel. Texture is on the thin side for a stout, but still pleasing, smooth and subtly fizzy. Don't get behind the 8-ball - get this one in your belly!

Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.

Always fun to ask people if they wanna share your 8 Ball, am I right? It pours a straight onyx topped by a finger of dusty tan foam. The nose comprises cocoa, light molasses, roasted malts, and the lightest possible touch of mild charcoal. The taste brings in more of the same, with a bit more roast character, the addition of dark chocolate (which goes pretty well with the already-present cocoa powder), and without the charcoal, making for a slightly less complex but nevertheless tasty stout. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a mostly smooth feel. Overall, a very nice stout. My only real complaint is that it's a touch thin, but not overly so, allowing this thing to still drink easily and be quite enjoyable.

A- Pours a deep black with a soft tan head that fades very quickly
S-Roasted coffer, caramel, and a some subtle earthy notes
T-Pretty disappointing. A little of the coffee comes through but the other notes that are in the nose aren't found in the taste. There are no really pronounced flavors
M-Light-medium overall, but quite light bodied for a stout
O-Not a fan. Being a stout I would expect much more in the flavor and more body. The flavor falls behind the aroma.

22oz bottle courtesy of Beermasons subscription, poured into a Mikkeller tulip glass.

Jet black in colour, pouring with a light tan head of foam that hangs around if agitated, otherwise hanging on as film.

Initial smell is of dark chocolate, quite strong, but falls away being replaced by a lighter aroma of burnt malt.

Nice roasted malt flavour, with hints of chocolate and a touch of coffee that comes very late.

Typically good mouthfeel, befitting an oatmeal stout. Felt a little thin early on, but seems to build upon that.

Overall a nice stout, smooth, perhaps a little too straight forward, but decent enough as a go-to beer.
